might be for the hacks but xbox live normally has a maintenance every 6 or so months so it could easily be that. also they will be getting the console ready for the spring update.

Um, no. Microsoft always brings down Xbox Live for a day in order to implement new back-end features in advance of a service update. Microsoft has two Service Updates per year, one in the Spring and another in the Fall.
The Spring 2007 Update is due within the next month or two, so this downtime is to implement the back-end stuff that will make whatever is in the Spring Update work.
If the downtime were due to a security breach, they sure as heck wouldn't wait till Tuesday to take the service down. They would do it ASAP to fix the breach.Â

I think everyone will agree with me when I say this - a day of not being able to play online is a hell of a lot better than having your account hacked and your hard earned funds used Live points.
