[QUOTE="def_mode"][QUOTE="Verge_6"] Why?Verge_6
Why online play should be offered free? You serious you are asking me this question?

Yeah. Is it 'cause you're entitled as a consumer or something? We have some right to dictate how a company should charge, if at all, for their products? Sounds awfully socialist to me...

Lets not get too far with this simple argument. MS is basically charging you for a privelage to play online. MS tried charging Games for Windows Live but was not successful because PC gamers ditched it. There were alternatives like Steam, Xfire etc. So people did not bother paying for GFWL (which is now free)if they have Steam available for free.

Now it makes you wonder, if their service is one hell of a service, why did they stop charging for GFWL? Because people will not pay for it.

Now with 360's case, XBL Gold is the only way for you to play your multiplayer games, and MS took the advantage. Do you get the idea? Yes it is business, that I understand but Its just my opinion that XBLG is a rip off and is just another way MS trying to make money. Do not give me that "oh because keeping datas arent free" or "there are people doing maintenance" etc etc. So does PSN and Steam, and they are both free.

By the way, Verge, I know exactly what you're going to say to my latest response, which is that it's entirely subjective what someone would want to pay for Xbox Live and it's entirely preference whether or not they think is worth it, but all that indicates to me is that you're trying to remove the Xbox Live fees from the realm of objective discussion with this ridiculous train of argument so that we can't score a point against the Xbox. Instead of relying on rhetoric, how about you stand up for Xbox 360 as a platform and demand that your interests as a consumer be upheld? It sure would make this business on system wars much easier if Xbox Live was free.

How about this: you shouldn't pay for XBox Live because there are better services offered for free and there's nothing about the Gold subscription that actually costs Microsoft money. Meaning it's essentially pure profit.

Welcome to the land of America, comrade! :D And, again, how do the other services and the way they are handled by their owners, dictate what MS should do with LIVE? Their product, their rules. Don't like 'em? Don't pay. Simple. :) The reason people should pay for it is that they enjoy it enough to want to spend a few bucks a month and sacrifice a bottle of soda a week. But, we all know how you want MS and anyone who doesn't despise them with the fiery passion that you do should be burned at the stake, so do carry on. I'll always be here, watching from the sidelines in amusement. :)

The reason they charge is so they can make a buck. No one really believes that that cash is being used to keep servers running or whatnot. Once again, if one does not appreciate that notion, they have the power to speak with their wallets and not use Live. They can easily go to another platform and use those free, and sometimes even superior, services that they offer.

That's an awfully horrible comparison, considering no one would have the option to go to a vendor that doesn't charge for air, hmm?

I do not have a good rig to run COD4, Gears etc and Since I am on a budget, I chose to go with XBLG for now. I have no choice but to pay just to play my games online. This is were MS's plans work. Business is only good when you are the one earning the money.

I removed everything that doesn't make any sense. You're literally saying I'm not allowed to make normative statements regarding the products of a business and their price points. This is the entire point of system wars and the engine of capitalism. Why don't you go find better targets, like videogame reviewers or movie critics? Why don't you go knock on the doors of stock exchange consultants or real estate agents? Why don't you explain carefully to marketing divisions that "no, this isn't the best deal I've ever seen, because it's entirely subjective, don't you see?" It's especially ridiculous considering we are actually functionally the consumers in this situation. If we're not allowed to make normative statements regarding products and their price points, we might as well fill our wallet full of money and let it hang out the back of our pants while we walk around the supermarket blindfolded grabbing random items.

Its not a comparison. Its just to strengthen my point that online play should of been free. Allow Silver users to have online play and let Gold members have special access to other stuff like Inside Xbox, Featured news or upcoming events, early demos etc. That I can live with.

Then would your ability to play online arguably outweigh the disadvantages of not paying? You can always save up for a PS3, a new rig (which aren't as expensive as they seem), and use their free services. :?

I have a PS3... I have stated my point/opinion in the past posts and not willing to say it again. At the end of the day, everyone knows XBLG and that online play should be free.

I ended that statement in a question. It's called cross-examination. So what are the conditions by which I may make normative statements regarding the products of a business and their price points if I'm supposed to always be cognizant of the business's right to dictate their own prices? Seems to me like there's nothing you've stated that bars me from saying that the price point of Xbox Live Gold is ridiculous and that Microsoft should make it free.

[QUOTE="Verge_6"][QUOTE="def_mode"][QUOTE="Verge_6"] Okay, where's my free steam locomotive from the Cumbres and Toltec railroad? I've devoted years of my life to working on it, and have given them thousands.

'Cause Cell Block B is a baaaaaad bad place to be. :(

LOL! good one.

The Ads wouldn't cover the costs. At least not the ones on currently XBL.

It takes a lot of work to reroute hosting duties to the subscribers. You have to copy and paste existing network code. Ughhh....so hard.

The only way we would see MS stop charging for XBL would be if all of a sudden, people stopped paying for the service. I personally don't mind paying a certain amount of money for Live, it is a good service but when it comes to online gaming PSN is not that far behind. I like to watch some of the Inside Xbox vids, the interface and how easy it is to play/chat with your friends. I wouldn't mind for PSN either as long as Sony places some servers in Mexico, starts accepting mexican credit cards, and improves the reliability of their updates (the last one has a lot of people in fear of their PS3 breaking on them). BTW, I want Sony to improve its service in Mexico because I live there and I find it ridiculous that I can buy anything from the XBL Marketplace with my CC but to buy something from the PSN I must go out a buy a goddamn card!

[QUOTE="Verge_6"] Why?Stevo_the_gamer

Why online play should be offered free? You serious with this question?

You think you're "entitled" to free online gaming? :?

Yeah I do.. i pay for my internet, I am a pc gamer first and foremost ps gamer second, handheld gamer 3rd... and guess what WIth the PC/PS3/PS2/PSP/Ds/WIi i can play online for free, I get wifi out of the box on PS3/PsP/Ds/Wii but again its' nikel and dime on 360... I don't like m$ or their crappy monopolistic practices . I would quit gaming if they took over. Period. Go ahead support the richest company in the world who also happens to be the only one who charges you for p2p and puts ads so they make even more money. The only company that charges 10x the retail price of a wifi adapter , 10x the retail price of a hd.. go support that. And if m$ ever gets their wish, and becomes gaming monopoly and puts live fee an hourly rate with a bare bones console and horrible only shooter games. Don't come crying about it becasue I am telling you now that is what would happen. PC gamers know this. PC gamers recognized ms abandoning them way back in the early 2000s and it was only reinforced recently with the closure of some of pc gamings greates dev teams. Yeah I don't like MS in gaming, I will never ever hide that fact.

Yes actually. As far as accessing the online component of games you already paid for goes. But Microsoft chooses to charge for it on their closed platform... because they can. So thats their choice, they can, and burden forced upon the consumer, take it or leave it if you want to play your games online and download demos / dlc.

Microsoft will continue to charge for Live as long people keep paying for it. Simple as that! If you want to take a stand against getting charge for playing online. There plenty alternatives. Playstation 3, PC, and yes the Wii. I know at times owning an Xbox 360 is like being in a abusive realtionship. (RROD, E74, ridiculous accessories prices, etc...)

With Ads, you get some sweet treasure once in a while ;). I mean, I've had some free games, free online, lots of crap basically handed to me because those guys flashing their company name on the dashboard are so nice! I wouldn't say that just because Ads are in your face all the time makes it mandatory for everything to be free, but it does feel nice to have an unexpected gift waiting for you at the download section. Besides, everyone's gotta make some money somehow :P.

I go back and forth on this. Everyone knows they have to pay to play the online portion, and developers know that it has to be paid for, so I don't think it's fair to say what you are saying.

well that makes sense, but I still believe they should make it free seeing it can happen without a subscription.

I guarantee you the day will come win XBL is forcefully free. PSM & XBL are virtually equal & once PSN is completely plausible online MS will have to cut their fees & silver/gold level method.
