Xbox Live Reward System

Microsoft may have recently made it more expensive to play Xbox 360 games online, but it's now giving something back to users in the form of the Xbox Live Rewards scheme. The system will reward those who buy subscriptions to Xbox Live Gold, make marketplace purchases, use the UK-only Sky Player service, or take "a quick survey" each month. The rewards operate on a sliding scale, with one-month Gold subscription renewals netting users 10 points (9 pence, or 13 cents) to spend and annual family pack renewals netting users 400 points. Users' first online Gold subscription purchase will net them 100 points (90 pence, or $1.30), as will activating and using the Gold-exclusive UK Xbox Sky Player service. A standard 12-month single Xbox Live Gold subscription will net a user 200 points (£1.80, $2.60). If users fill in a "quick" survey each month, they will receive 20 points (18 pence, or 36 cents). Microsoft has also promised that those signed up to the programme will be able to participate in "exclusive promotions" in exchange for "cool prizes," though further information on the promotions and prizes were not forthcoming. All existing Xbox Live members can sign up for the rewards scheme via the Xbox website.

So good or absolutely pointless?
IMO It's pointless and a waste of time.

it's pretty lame but better than nothing.

i wish i could get credit for past years.

i think they found a goldmine in the whole spend "x" get "x" back promotions and that's why they are doing this, (and to stop people from buying cheaper cards online) i just got my 800 points back for the promotion they had in october.

that was good timing since i was going to buy RDR undead anyway.

as long as it's not hit and miss like Bing rewards is.

then it's definitely better than nothing.

It's one of those take 10%/give back 2% schemes. "Sure, we increased the price but look! Prizes!!!!!"

Ah... this good old scam. "Reward" the users with money... but money that only works to buy more stuff on your goods (in this case, data). It gives the illusion that you are "getting something" but really, all your getting is the ability to get more stuff you may or may not want.

How utterly pointless. They'll give me 19p if I give them £20?

Hows about I just keep my £20?

Which is about the same thing as, rather than getting points to buy goods, just getting stuff that you may or may not want.

They should reward you by the day for being a Gold member. 1 point a day would seem pretty fair, and will help if you've somehow collected an odd number of points.

Its a marketing ploy plain and simply. Sort of based on the same principle as $0.99c vs $1. 1% or less is not a big deal but it does have a psychological difference.

I love how people complain about getting free MS points. Is it a lot? Of course not, but for buying a 12 month Live subscription that you would normally buy you are getting $2 in your wallet. It's $2 more than you had before.

So many ungrateful people.

I honestly think if Microsoft were to give out $1000 for anyone that signed up for Xbox Live there would still be people complaining that it isn't enough.

What the hell? You guys are complaining about getting free points? This is why companies don't care about us anymore. To many of the people in the "core gaming community" are a bunch of ungrateful jerks who can never be satisfied.

What, so they did't just increase the price by about 15%? This is abviously a marketing ploy to calm down people who feel offended.

Look to my answer just above.. Those "free" points are'nt so free considering the XBL price just increased.

Slashkice

Technically it's $58 less than you had before depending on how you look at it.

That is only relevant if you are buying the service just to get the $2. People are buying the service to play online not to get the $2. I highly doubt anyone that was on the fence about paying $60 for Gold is all of a sudden going to buy it now that they have a $2 incentive.

It would be great if MS came out tomorrow and said, well after looking at forums and seeing people complain about how what we are doing is practically worthless we are going to go back to just charging you $60 and you recieve no points.

Just from the yearly gold renewal and taking the survey every month, you'll net 440 MSP per year. If you combine that with the Bing MSP reward system, you can get 2-3k MSP. Which adds up to 3-4 Arcade games (more, if you buy games on Deals of the Week) or 3-4 DLC packs for your games.

That, and if it's for free, I couldn't care less whether it's pointless or not.

Pointless, it would take you two years of subscibing to Xbox Live and two years of filling out a total of 24 surveys to just get $10 back, that is not worth my time.

So pay $60 to get $2 back in your wallet? I'm at a lost at how this is a deal or how I should feel appreciative.

That's how deals work right?

Like if I buy a pair of shoes that's normally $50, but I get $10 off, then it'd be like paying $50 just to get $10.

Only I wouldn't look at it that way. I'd look at it like "hey, I got some shoes, and saved some money"

That's how most consumers will look at it, yes. But 2 dollars off a 60 dollar purchase hardly is an incentive.

Right, but just like people buy shoes without deals I'm sure people previously were buying Xbox Live without deals as well.

It's just a little bonus that when you pay for Xbox Live you get MS points, and you get them for doing things while being a part of Xbox Live Gold.

A) they're not free points, they're contingent upon filling out a survey, which is work and a service to Microsoft or B) spending money on Microsoft subscriptions And BTW if you abstain from purchasing Xbox Live Gold you now have netted yourself $60 in your wallet you wouldn't have had before. BTW before the price hike this fall, Xbox Live Gold was $50 a year. Thus even after the rewards you're still short $8 what you would have had on the old subscription plan. On any other platform, online gaming is free. Just figured I'd remind everyone.

The only reason this reward system exists is for the purpose of adding incentive to those who currently do not subscribe to the gold version. Microsoft figures if they add this reward system, it will sway enough users to upgrade to Gold that will make up for any added cost for the reward system and an added profit to bolster their coffers more. And I am sure it's there to help sway some users from downgrading from Gold too. For those who already have Gold and have no intent on changing anything regardless of this reward scheme, it does benefit them, even if it is a very small benefit.

So basically for spending an extra $10 a year on their subscription fee that they shouldn't have even raised to begin with we're getting $2.60 "worth" back in MS points. Lucky us.

This is obviously just a scheme to try to get people to spend more money, if you think Microsoft is really trying to "give back to the people" with this move you're blind. What can you buy with 200 MSP? That's nothing. :| The MSP system shouldn't even exist to begin with. It was a scheme in it's own and it works.

No. An actual $2 would actual be better. Instead they give you 200 useless MS points to waste buying clothes for your avatar.
