Launching in less countries, less units allocated, possible yield issues, less pre orders than PS4...to have the position of industry analyst must require at least a modicum of intelligence and common sense, no? Firms won't hire some drunk bum they find on the street or a mentally crippled chimpanzee; They would hire a human being with actual cognitive function, wouldn't they? Read between the lines. The words "ship" and "sell" are very different. Though many companies will use "shipped" numbers as a means by which to judge product success -- which backfired on MS... -_-musicalmacWell shipped is technically sold. It may not be in the consumers living room but it was sold from MS to the retailer. All retailers are not going to report back to MS and Sony to let them know how many units have been sold to consumers so "shipped" numbers are the closest you can get. I would guess that retailers don't have hundreds of them sitting in their stock rooms so the shipped number is as close to an end user number you will see.

Remember that 900 MILLION dollar write-down MS shared with us during their earnings report? All the result of unsold Surface RT tablets.

Yes it does. It is not sold to the end user but it is sold to the retailer. The write off you are talking about is MS taking a loss on the price cut of the surface and refunding the retailers who are now lowering the prices on the stock they have already PURCHASED from MS as well as MS loss on unsold inventory. When an item is shipped to a retailer it is sold. I don't claim that number is the number of end users because it is not. That number of items shipped is though the number sold to retailers. In the business world when you sell to a retailer that item is sold. What happens at the retail level is not a concern unless that item can be sent back to the manufacturer/wholesaler for a refund and at that time could be used to skew shipped/sold numbers. I deal with this all the time when I have product that is past date or unsold from my distributors. When I buy it from them it is "sold" in their eyes. I now have the responsibility of delivering their product to the public. cheesie253"Shipped" means "sold" to companies who aren't watching their products fly off the shelves. It's a lazy, safe way of talking about product success. If you'll notice, it bit MS in the butt to the tune of nearly a billion dollars.
Maybe this is why publications keep saying Pachter is a good analyst. It's all relative, I guess.Launching in less countries, less units allocated, possible yield issues, less pre orders than PS4...to have the position of industry analyst must require at least a modicum of intelligence and common sense, no? That went real well for nintendo, I think their product was flying off shelves for what, two weeks. At some point they will have to buyback units, if they haven't already.

And yet cows have spent the last 7 months believing the IDC sales prediction  shut up
When it comes to next gen consoles launch window, shipped and sold numbers will be the same. Both will be sold out for months and the best selling launch console will be the one with the better availibility. Comparing sales will be pointless until both consoles are consistently available. That could take a few months. The 360 was hard to find for the first 6 months actually.[QUOTE="Cranler"]

Buy backs typically only happen on products that have a shelf life or are deemed no longer usable. Not saying the big three do not buy back but I am guessing they do not as the products do not have a shelf life or sell by date. Could be very wrong on that.Even if the PS4 sells half of what the X1 sells per country it will still be selling 2-3x more.
US, EU, JP, India > 21 Countries
EU alone has 45-50 countries (5 shared with Asia)
Very possible. Just like any other product. While I don't think the One will sell at a three to one margin against the PS4 I don't think it will be as bad as any of the fanboys make it out to be. MS did an incredible job at taking up market share this gen and even though they haven't done great so far marketing the One I believe once they do go full swing with a good campaign they will keep a big part of that share. Then once they ship they collect dust until a price drop.

shipped is sold.
Be careful people don't seem to understand this.Ah yes...rules of SW: Shipped units=sold units
And quantity=quality     Who could forget those 2 important rules.

Be careful people don't seem to understand this.it's a common misconception but might also be a matter of perspective. shipping a console is the same as selling it as far as the manufacturer is concerned. some people just look at "sold" as "sold by a retailer to a customer."

Yes correct. When someone argues that MS number are shipped and not sold they are wrong. They are sold on MS end. If they want to say MS shipped number does not equal end users I would agree. Thing is I have come across PS2, Dreamcasts, N64 and other systems that I bought from a warehouse that were included the manufactures "sold" numbers but were never actually sold at retail. I agree its perspective but its how you interpret that information that is correct or incorrect. I don't see how you can argue that manufacturers shipped/sold numbers aren't true when the sale at retail isn't the "first" sale. At that point it is being re-sold.Read the post, here are a few problems with the analyst in question; he's a terrible analyst. For starters, while the core audience in NA probably could care less, he completely underestimates the value of the $100 price difference. For the casuals, that is a PS4 and a copy of "insert big holiday title here". Launch lineup doesn't really matter when you take into account the actual launch lineup for each console - BF4, Watch_Dogs, AC4, CoD:Ghosts. They'll likely be the titles that move the most units on the new consoles this holiday season, being a $400 system makes the PS4 an easier buy.
Now, something the analyst makes no mention of is how horribly the console is preordering overseas. It's a pretty bad rate, with MS' biggest foothold outside of US soil, the UK, not really reporting strong numbers. The fact that the PS4 numbers are ahead here in the states is reason enough to raise eyebrows at this article, as there isn't a strong data point that corroborates it. It would've been one thing if there were kinect software that helps showcase the new device's capabilities, but that isn't reflective in any of its big E3 software. And without a big Kinect 2 showpiece a la Dance Central, that device will have a hard time making a second splash among 'teh casuals', particularly when it's still called simply 'kinect', implying its equivalent to a product some 25 Million people have been exposed to and purchased.
This is all, of course, not accounting for the fact that there are just going to be fewer Xbox Ones available this holiday season. With the size of the One's chipset, there is no way you garner a big enough yield on its die to have a 8 million or more launch allocation in 8 weeks. If anything, the more telling piece of data of where the two companies are on their production schedules; Sony has submitted the consumer version of the PS4 to the FCC last week, meaning the PS4 may come out as early as October - MS hasn't. Couple that with District Managers for Gamestop coming out and confirming the median preorder allocations for their stores is around 40-50 for PS4, and 10-20 for One, and you have an idea of just where this is going.
Its hilarious to me that Sony fans think that the opinions on forums are going to translate into real world sales. The people who frequent gaming sites are the very small minority. I expect the Xbox One to outsell the PS4 significantly.Miketheman83It's amazing how much more popular you feel Microsoft or the Xbox brand is.
