@SolidTy: I agree that "playing online" vs "playing games" makes it difficult to make a definitive comparison of the numbers but at the same time you can't automatically assume they aren't referencing the same thing either..
Surely, Sony tracks these numbers by people's PSN account being "online" while playing games just like Microsoft tracks people's XBL account being online while playing "games".. A very easy and logical conclusion can be reached that despite the slight difference in wording, the base statistical information they are providing is exactly the same.. "how many hours a person is using their console to play GAMES while their account is logged in ONLINE".. Playing "games" and playing "online" obviously doesn't have to be separate stats in this case..
I mean, common sense tells you that Sony would post the highest numbers possible right?.. So why would they only post numbers from total hours playing MP when they are easily tracking both MP and SP together?.. It seems much more likely that both Sony and Microsoft reported TOTAL numbers and we are looking at a situation in which (much to the disbelief of Sony fanboys) gamers are playing games on Xbox One waaay more than they are playing games on PS4 despite the disparity in sales numbers..
This can be due to a number if reasons.. Primary reasons being that just about every Xbox One exclusive has online multiplayer included in the package and online multiplayer exponentially lengthens the time spent with a game.. An average Titanfall player has probably logged well over 100 hours while the average InFamous: SS player may have logged less than 10 hours of total time with that game after a single play through... Same line of logic goes for online racers like Forza Motorsport 5 and Forza Horizon 2.. Even games like Dead Rising 3 and Ryse: Son of Rome had online multiplayer since launch in addition to new titles like Sunset Overdrive shipping with online MP as well.. Meanwhile, the only notable PS4 exclusive to have online MP was Killzone.. The fact is, MP >>>>>>>>>>>> SP in terms of logging hours on your console.. Beyond that, maybe the PS4 hype train is having the "Wii effect" in which people are buying the console and games based solely on it being the cool thing to do but aren't actually putting in the hours once they get home.. Who knows, but lets not act like this end result is an absolute impossibility..
In the end, due to the wording, I agree that definitive conclusions are more difficult to come to but lets not act like the TC's train of thought was totally unfounded.. In all actuality, the TC's assessment of the information provided is the most likely scenario considering the typical behavior or companies (post the highest numbers possible)..
