http://www.gamespot.com/news/xbox-one-knows-when-its-overheating-report-6412896

The Xbox One can automatically detect if it is overheating and can cool itself down to counteract the thermal pressure, according to Xbox general manager of console development Leo del Castillo.

"We can't prevent misuse of the product," del Castillo said. "But we can certainly anticipate it. The way we designed the box, we don't actually intend it to ever have to go to maximum speed under normal environmental conditions. But there is overhead."

It's alliiiiveeee!

Still no word if Gold account is required for automatic cooling.

I wouldn't put it past them to blame the failures on the end users although I see it as a loophole for voiding some warranties.

You weren't supposed to use the 360 to play games. They tried to teach lems that by not releasing games but they didn't get it.

The Xbox One will prompt you to change your AA batteries if the console starts to overheat.

That really wouldn't prevent a RROD level issue. The RROD issue wasn't overheating per say, it was that on the high end of the allowable range of heat it was actually unsafe. Assuming they design and build the thing right, RROD shouldn't be an issue with or without this.

Thermal throttling? So the cpu and gpu will downlock even more making games lag?

TheKingIAm
That is basically the only thing that can be done, aside from fan throttling. During the cpu/gpu downclock, the system will also adjust voltages downward accordingly, further reducing heat issues. So yeah....basically what you said, but spelled out for the idiots that don't know what that means. So in the end - Yup, slowdowns will definitely occur. The thing I am wondering though is does this 'Overheating Solution' also include actually rendering the system unusable until proper operating temperatures are achieved? Because if so, then you really don't have to worry about slowdowns in game right? You just won't be able to play at all or have limited (maybe Dashboard only) functionality until the temps are regulated.

Speaking with Gizmodo, del Castillo said Microsoft can't do anything to prevent users from putting Domino's pizza boxes on the Xbox One, but the system is designed to stay cool.

So... for all this time, the consoles were unable to throttle, shut down, or increase fan speeds if approaching critical temps to prevent damage?

Its real. Broadcast equipment dies very fast if they overheat as they run at 100% all the time. When I went to Tuner broadcast in London, they said they have 3 minutes to get the backup AC system working if the main goes down before the equipment overheats and dies.
