tldr; version scroll down

This is the rumorville from the old Qman! Microsoft is going to do to Sony what Sony did to Microsoft in 2013. They are launching the more powerful Xbox Series X for only $399, a full $100 cheaper than the slower crazy 90's PC tower looking PS5.

There are a lot of you out there who are going to buy next gen consoles on day 1 but a lot more, the vast majority will either wait or they will buy a PS4 pro or X1X on the cheap. Well, Microsoft is jumping into that space as well. You can buy a cheap X1X or PS4 Pro or you can get an Xbox Series S(Sega Series S in Japan) and that will get you next gen CPU and GPU power. The GPU will be faster than even the X1X and will support hardware ray tracing and it will have a true next gen leap in CPU power. Who the heck would buy a last gen console when they can get the XSS for $199?

Sony is flopping all over the place for next gen. They don't know how to do BC, for some reason they were ignoring it all this time. Probably thought they could get away with selling the games again to the same owners for the next gen. Their controller looks like they copied the Xbox controller but were still too stubborn to do what was necessary in joining the rest of decent gaming society because they still didn't change their crappy button to analog stick alignment.

Sony is such a mess that they finally are silently admitting the entire PS3 genereation and blu-ray fiasco was a scam. Why do I say that, if blu-ray was necessary for the PS3, why would the PS5 have a diskless version and not require blu-ray? Could it be that Sony invested a crapload of money in betting on the wrong technology? They thought a physical format would be around in the future when it turns out, it all went streaming and digital. Translation, they screwed their PS3 with a $599 launch price and crappy performance that lost them what people thought was impossible for them to lose that gen to MS. They came back with the PS4 low price and no BS but now MS is taking back what ground they lost. MS is not playing games, they want to challenge even gamers who want last gen's leftovers, now it would be dumb for anyone to go that route instead of XSS.

MS has the most powerful next gen console by far and it will be $100 cheaper than the weaksauce storm trooper looking no BC having sh%t design PS5. MS has the BC including all the way back to original Xbox and of course 360. The games graphics upgraded substantially for free, YOU GOT THAT SONY FANS, free!!! You can play next gen games such as Cyberpunk 2077 on the last gen X1X/X1S and you will still own it when you upgrade to the XSX/XSS. Gamepass rocks the house and is the best thing to happen to gaming in a long long time. It's almost as if Microsoft has been working at this for a long time and is about to curb stomp Sony all over the place.

tldr; version - feast your eyes

These are rumors at this point as nothing has been confirmed. There is a pretty good leak with Amazon France showing PS5 for $499/$399 but nothing has been leaked price wise regarding the Xbox Series X/S. Insider info claims Microsoft is waiting for Sony to announce price so they can announce $100 cheaper price point. Also the Xbox Series S is targeting a 50% lower price than the Xbox Series X. The idea is no one would want a weaker next gen console if it's only going to be $100 less. Everyone would spend $100 more and then why did the company bother in the first place? For this reason they are cutting down the specs but also making it super affordable even though they are taking a loss. Again, this has not been announced and a lot of this may be handled on a subscription service basis such as cell phones are now but this remains to be seen.

What I can surmise is that Microsoft is in the process of delivering a final deathblow to Sony. This is my prediction but we'll see in the next few years how accurate it is. Microsoft is going to slowly kill off Sony. Amazon, Apple and Google will enter the console space, one of them may make a significant splash if they play their cards right. The future shows me Sony as a software developer and Nintendo in a way is already there.

What say you?

I got this info from different sources including youtubers who were speculating on rumors. Below you will find one I saw today that repeated the pricing rumors specifically.

I can't blame you for that position. If you would've told me a few months before the launch in 2013 that the Xbox would have 1.3 teraflops and be $499 and the PS4 would have 1.8 teraflops, 8GB of GDDR5 RAM and be $399 I would've said I don't believe it.

Haha no way the XsX is gonna be $399, that's at least a $100 loss for each console sold for MS. And Sony will easily match or beat that price if necessary.

I thought ps 5 would be 400 & X series X 600$, now i think they both will be 600 $ and the PS 5 All Digital will be 500 $ and if MS releases Lockheart weaker console most likely will be 300-400 if rumors are true who really cares anymore

Seems too good to be true... but microsoft would be taking 200+ dollar hit per console, yet likely signing up people to their month gaming service on top of other game sales that would cover that cost within a year or two and take away people from Sony.

It's a good idea if they were to do it, cause 400 dollars for that much hardware which is more powerful and has better backwards compatibility is a steal and would get their console into peoples hands no questions asked. I haven't bought a console since the xbox 360 era and if it only costs 400 dollars, but that value for that much power, I'm tempted to get one... my current PC video 1080gtx card and that alone is more than twice that rumored price when I bought it.... but 400 dollars, I don't believe it, it'll be at least 600.

Prices have not been announced yet but let's think about this logically. If Microsoft wants to dramatically increase market share next gen, can they price their XSX at $599? Can they even price the XSX the same if the goal is to dramatically and quickly increase market share? What if they priced it at $399, would that quickly and dramatically increase market share?

I think Microsoft is playing 3D chess this time. They know that the impression given by launch will last years and will almost be irreversible so they want to make sure the impression favors them. Boy it would help them a lot if the impression is that the XSX is a beast and a lot better than the PS5 and $100 cheaper at only $399. Consoles would fly off the shelves. If the XSS is released at $199, it will sell more than anything they could have anticipated.

Maybe Microsoft doesn't want to absolutely dominate this gen. If they do, they know what to do. Sony knew what they had to do in 2013 and it worked very well.

The idea would be for MS to wait for Sony to announce price and then undercut them by $100. Keep something in mind, the production costs for the PS5 are not much lower if at all to the XSX. That's because the SSD for the PS5 is ridiculously expensive at this point in time. Everything will be different a year from now but at launch, Sony would lose just as much or more than Microsoft if they are priced equally. In fact, if Sony prices the PS5 at $499, it would cost Microsoft a significant chunk of money to undercut them by $100. That would be a calculated risk they could take and the idea is they would make the difference up because they will get their installed base up quickly and make the money up by selling software.

@Martin_G_N: MS can afford a $100 loss per console, Sony cannot.

Interesting that MS would partner with Sega in Japan. That name has a lot of clout there and a hell of a lot of beloved franchises to suit the market. If true, it’s an interesting and wise decision.

The thing is, that even if the PS5 will be $499 Sony will be selling it at a loss, I'd say at least $150-200 per unit for the first 6 months.

@Sevenizz: I said at least. The XsX is more expensive than the PS5 hardware. And Sony is almost guaranteed a lot of sales because most people don't care about power alone. Therefore Sony could easily take a hit in price. Look at the X360, even with that great headstart of the X360, the PS3 still ended up selling more.

@Sevenizz:

This bullshit is so lol worthy is not even funny, when sony had free onlone play they actually sold the PS3 at a loss higher than $200 per unit they surely with PSN+ money they surely can take a loss in the machine.

Analyse this how much did the xbox one cost? How much did the xbox one X cost?

What make you think that at $500 ms isnt losing money already on the series x even more at $400?

Considering MS just shut down mixer to cut dead weight, I really don't see how they could price the XSX that low.

You know, since the CEO is all about cutting fat and being profitable now....or so he says

What if someone is expecting the diskless PS5 to be $399, would that be a setup for a major disappointment?

If Sony can price the diskless PS5 at $399 when we know the disk drive adds only maybe $20 of cost, then we know for darn certain MS can price the XSX at 399 if they decide to do so.

The expense of hardware is going to be very close if not the PS5 will be more expensive at launch due to the SSD. Not necessarily because the SSD is so great but because it's so expensive. A 1TB PC SSD with those specs doesn't even exist and when it does, it won't be cheap.

Imagine comparing 2 PCs. One of them has an expensive GPU like a 2080 vs the other one has something like a 2060 but with super expensive SSD or even RAM. The 2080 system is a going to destroy it in gaming performance and yes the 2080 is a lot more powerful and expensive GPU but the 2060 system is more expensive because of the hyper expensive memory.

If MS wants to be aggressive and really increase their market share, then they have to price the XSX at 399 if Sony prices their diskless PS5 at 399. If Sony prices the PS5 at 499/599, then MS can afford to price the XSX at 499.

This whole Microsoft has the money to loss is kind of stupid. Look what they did to Nokia, mixer, and Zune. If they don't make money they cut projects. And selling a console with a 7 year life cycle at that big of a loss is not gonna happen.

MS has to match Sony's price last generation was a huge disappointment. Pricing the weaker machine £100 more was always a difficult sell.

You're not listening. Who has more money Sony or Microsoft? My point is if Sony can afford to do something, then Microsoft can afford to do it as well.

The production costs of Xbox Series X and PS5 are roughly the same, got that? The XSX has a more powerful CPU, GPU and a lot more memory bandwidth, the PS5 has a faster SSD. It will cost roughly the same to make them, got it?

Sony is rumored to be selling the PS5 for 499 and 399 for the diskless version. That means you can have a full powered full PS5 minus just the disk drive that is useless to many for only 399. A blu-ray drive adds at most $20 to the cost of the PS5. If Sony can price the PS5 diskless at 399, you are telling me it's impossible and ridiculous for Microsoft to price the XSX at 399?

Why would that be? Does Sony have more money than Microsoft? How can Sony afford to price the diskless PS5 at 399 but Microsoft can't afford to price the XSX at 399 when the production costs are the same? How does that make sense to you?

I took the most credible rumors I had heard recently and started a thread about it. I don't have just one link and I didn't think it would work to just put up a ton of links to videos and articles that are based on speculation anyway. I am telling you from what I know these are the most credible rumors and I am expecting the price to be accurate. The only thing I am in doubt about is what if Sony prices the PS5 at 499/599 then who knows what MS does at that point. The Sega Series X/S japan rumors are also less likely than the price rumors but still plausible and I hope they are true.

Thats because the patent sony had for its ssd changes dram which would have consume more than 1GB for sram,so while the ssd is expensive it would not be as expensive.

I was suggesting a Sega-Microsoft team-up months back, with Microsoft manufacturing the hardware and Sega supplying the first-party software. Looks like many other fans had similar ideas, with this Sega Series X rumour. But that rumour looks pretty unlikely.

Thats because the patent sony had for its ssd changes dram which would have consume more than 1GB for sram,so while the ssd is expensive it would not be as expensive.

But please tell what is the difference between 36CU and 52CU in price.

You flip and flop more than a teenage football supporter.

So the SSD in PS5 is an expensive part.

I'm happy to wait for production costs to be released. Until then different parts of the console will be more expensive than in the other. The more custom you go usually the more cost.

Rumors are that just rumors but a lot more rumors are pointing if any the series X will be cheaper.

@tdkmillsy:

All ssd are expensive compare to normal hdd.

But since you want to carry his argument, what is the price of the ps5 ssd?

The logic in this freaking place as always is totally moronic.

The xbox has a 16CU bigger GPU which on PC would carry a consiredably bigger price tag,has faster ram and wider bus which would be more expensive as well and bigger ssd which would also require more nand flash memory which isnt cheap.

And some how the series x will be 400 and the ps5 500 yeah that make total sense.

Even better a $200 weaker version, the last time a machine launch for $200 was in 2001 the GC.
