Miscrosoft said 3%..others said 33% Warranty firm SquareTrade has amassed over 1000 warranty claims for the Xbox 360 and come up with some interesting findings. They have found that the failure rate of Xbox 360 systems is at 16.4%, compared to a 3% rate for the PS3 or the Wii with sample sizes in the high hundreds. The Red ring of Death accounted for 60% of their Xbox 360 failures. The CEO for SquareTade said that in the future we may see an even higher percentage due to prolonged use.

"SquareTrade CEO Steve Abernethy speculated that the future may see an even higher percentage. "It is reasonable to believe these failure rates will increase over time, since the Xbox 360 failure issues tend to increase with prolonged use where overheating appears the main culprit," he said. Abernethy went on to note that while the company didn't track the different variations of the 360, he "would estimate most if not all were the original motherboard."

In taking statistics, the two most important factors are sample size and randomness. By using a pool of over 1000 redeemed warranties, the report's sample size is sufficient. On the other hand, since the sampling was taken from people who have to seek SquareTrade's warranty service out, the possibility exists that the randomness factor could be skewed, leaning towards heavy system users who are more likely to overheat their 360s. This doesn't invalidate the report by any means, but it is worth keeping mind."

this is way lower than the claimed 33% and higher than what MS says itself...

I hope they get this fix. I don't want Microsoft to go out with a whimper.

And yet this is only through one warranty firm. They do not do all 360 returns or have any way of tracing all them. Even if it was as low as 16% overall (and this just helps the case that its higher), that is way too high for a consumer electronic. 3% is the highest it should ever be and thats kind of high imo.

I'd say around 30-50% of all the 360 problems would go away if everyone had a fan.

Something most already knew that it was a design flaw. MS has to rush to get the 360 out to beat Sony.

They are trying to avoid consumer backlash, lawsuits and to make the board of directors and investers happy.

I said once that the failure rate was most likely between 10 and 20 percent. No one wanted to listen.

They still won't.

Cows REALLY want to believe that half of all 360's have broken and been replaced.

Isnt the trick to finding a Falcon 360 you look at the barcode on the box and if it says 175W (watts) that means it has a Falcon in it?

It' a sample (pool) of over 1000 360's. Read up on how statistics work and you will see that they take sample of a population and base there numbers off of that sample. There is no way to track every 360.

From all the people I know with a 360 and the number that had problems I would have to say it is at least 33%. Also you have to look at when they did the study because most recent warranties only are active after M$'s warranty which is 3 years on the RROD.

Yeah, and notice how it clearly states, "we may see an even higher percentage due to prolonged use"? In other words, they calculated the 16% failure rate after X amount of time. But in a year or more, the failure rate could potentially be as high as 100%.

Lets see 16% of what 10 million units. I have no idea how many 360s have sold so far but lets just say it 10 million. That means there atleast 1.6 million units that have failed. Thats just an unheard of amount and should never be that high.

3% in actual failure or consumer ****-ups? cause with consumer ****-ups, no product can stay at 3%.

I don't just mean dropping something, i mean not taking care of the machine, giving it poor ventilation, looking at to much porn...I feel i have revealed too much :(

Even though it wasn't bolded, they said the RROD was only 60% of the 16.4% failure claims.

That puts the RROD at less then 10%. Honestly isn't that bad. Still may wait until this summer for new GPU.

 yeah...sure and you're smoking what exactly? Just stop, 61% pffft... . This number is probably closer to reality than the 33% floated by some retailers and the sample of 1,000 is statistically solid. 16% is still way too high.

true, 1000 360 owners polled is statistically solid...

But, think about this - 16% of the roughly 18 000 000 consoles sold = [roughly] 3 MillionRRoD's so far... and counting...

Now, if the actual number is closer to double that percentage (which Microsoft employee/insiders have previously alleged) then... ouch....
