http://www.gamerevolution.com/news/405877-yakuza-xbox-one-could-still-happen-but-it-isnt-coming-to-the-switch

“To be realistic towards what happened, Yakuza 1 & 2 for Wii U was a significant failure. But our goal is still to develop cross-platform as much as possible, and we know that it brings an extra audience, that it allows us to attract more people. That being said, when it comes to Switch, I am convinced that it would not be the ideal platform on which to develop Yakuza games. Maybe the public is not expecting that kind of game on Switch. They may be used to different games. It may not be the ideal platform. Regarding Xbox One, we could consider it, knowing that Xbox One users might be more likely to be interested in a game like Yakuza. That could be an option.”

It came to PC, so I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up on Xbox One.

The Wii U was a failure, so it makes sense that Yakuza 1 & 2 failed on it. But the Switch has been a big success, so it doesn't make sense to assume Yakuza games would fail on it. Sega should consider porting a Yakuza title to the Switch (which shouldn't cost a lot) and see how it actually performs on the console before jumping to such a conclusion.

@Jag85: I think it's more of "lets not make a game for a machine that people can take to a Yakuza area and get killed cause they didn't had headphones on" than not making money.

@Jag85: I never understood why people think porting doesn’t cost a lot. If you port correctly, it takes a lot of time, money, and effort when the hardware is dissimilar. It’s easier if the hardware is similar but can still be a pain.

Look at the ports on the Switch now, not always the best. Because software can be the literal worst sometimes.

Making any decisions based on Wii U sales seems really shortsighted and the Wii U itself was a complete mess on it's own. The Switch is in a different league then Wii U. This is something that I don't get. Can they just port the Wii U versions over to the Switch? Like what Nintendo has been doing?

"Regarding Xbox One, we could consider it, knowing that Xbox One users might be more likely to be interested in a game like Yakuza. That could be an option.”

As for Xbox One. This would give it a chance for it to grow an even bigger audience. It's finally doing pretty well in the West ever since Yakuza 0 release, and I really don't think it's that much of a risk to Sega to at least port just one of them to Xbox One gamers and see how it goes.

I'm not sure an up-port of two PS2 games would really fly now, at least in the "$40-$60" space Sega seems to want to occupy. Maybe if they released it as a digital-only title for $10-$15, similar to what PS2/XB go for on PSN and XBL.

It'd be an inferior version anyway. I would not sacrifice those graphics or fps for portability. XB1 users probably wouldn't support Yakuza, too weab for them but I think it's worth a try since they have no games lol

I could see it coming to Xbox maybe starting with Shin Yakuza, since that will be starring the new protagonist, Ichiban. No way the series will come to Switch though, because it'd probably explode if it tried to run the dragon engine.

In terms of which console would guarantee more financial success for Yakuza, the Switch would make more sense than X1. The biggest market for Yakuza is Japan, where the Switch is selling like hot-cakes and the X1 is a massive flop. So it stands to reason that the Switch would guarantee a lot more sales than the X1 in Yakuza's biggest market.

The only way the X1 would make financial sense is if Sega is planning to expand the overseas audience for Yakuza. Up until last year, most gamers didn't think that such Japan-centric "weaboo" game franchises like Monster Hunter, Nier and Persona could become blockbusters in the West. If Sega is hoping for a similar breakthrough for Yakuza, it would make sense to have an X1 version.

Depends on what exactly is being ported. Yakuza 1 & 2 have already been ported to Wii U, so it should be fairly straightforward to port them to the Switch. It would be more complex to port Yakuza 0 & 3-5, however.

I think that ship has sailed. I would get into the series from the start if it were to arrive on Switch this year... but in a couple years? Hmm. I will probably have other things to play then.

@Jag85: I would agree the Wii U ports would be easier and cheaper. I don’t think they’d be cheap though and I don’t know the quality of those on the Wii U. Port of a port, that could be messy or much more simple. It would be interesting to see if Sega would test the waters with those.

Maybe if they brought the Wii U game to the west the sales could have been better. There has been cases where a game bombed in Japan and was saved by western sales. Also the port came out a nearly a year later than the PS3 version and looked worse graphically. Shame on them.

Maybe. It was amazing the miracle turnaround Lems had for Nier: Automata once they could finally play it. They hate what they can't have... and boy do they have a lot to hate.

Let's also not forget Lems embraced Japanese exclusives like DOA and Ninja Gaiden in previous generations. But since then, Japanese support for Xbox has dwindled significantly.

After the way Monster Hunter sold on X1 I agree. I have tried Yakuza games on PS3 last gen and I did ebjoy what I played but they didn't hold me. So I wont call them bad games by any means. They are quality I just didn't get hooked.

i think this just means any new games will not come to switch.

its possible for the old games to get ports in the future though.

those wiiU ports never came to the west. i think they might of made a profit if they did.

To add:

Yakuza used to sell by the loads in Japan and trickled in sales overseas before, but now overseas sales have reached about as much as they do in Japan.

Which means that it sold roughly half-million outside of Japan. Yakuza seems to be benefiting from the recent trend of Japan-centric games significantly expanding their overseas audiences (e.g. Monster Hunter, Nier, Persona, etc.).

Yakuza has always been a niche series, I don't think anyone has disputed that, but the difference now is that it's getting recognized in the west. Since February of last year, we've gotten Y0, Kiwami 1, Y6, and now we're on the verge of getting Kiwami 2 and Fist of the North Star. The series is doing so well over here, that they're remastering Y3, Y4, and Y5 over the course of this and next year, with most likely Shin Ryu ga Gotoku debuting not too long after the Japanese release. At this point, I'm convinced that Ishin is going to get localized as well, so there's never been a better time to be a Yakuza fan. :)
