US, March 14, 2008 - There's good news and bad news for the PS3 out of Japan today. On the positive side of things, Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan!, the PS3 entry in the series known in the West as Yakuza, sold 181,189 units in its first week of sales, making it the third best debut for a PS3 game (after Devil May Cry 4 and Dynasty Warriors 6). But dampening the celebrations is news that the PS3 saw only a modest bump in hardware sales over the period, to 21,008 units. This was despite the release of a new Satin Silver color variation.
Yakuza was at the top of Media Create's sales charts covering March 3 to March 9. Its nearest competitor was Smash Bros. X, which now in its second month of sales managed to shift another 50,401 units. Following these two were Wii Fit with 48,984 units and PS2's Gundam Musou Special with 39,119 units.
Metroid Prime 3 followed with 32,388 units in its first week of release, besting Wii Sports (Nintendo, Wii, 18,765), Soma Bringer (Nintendo, DS, 17,276), Doraemon (Sega, DS, 16,997), Musou Orochi (Koei, PSP, 15,902) and Everyone's Common Knowledge Training (Nintendo, Wii, 14,454). Doraemon and Common Knowledge both debuted over the period.
In the hardware race, not only did Yakuza and the new color fail to give the PS3 a major numbers boost, but it also failed to push the system ahead of its competitors. Wii was the number one system once again at 57,068 units. PSP came in close at second with 53,924 units, besting the DS Lite's 48,658 units. Closing off the list, as usual, were the PS2 at 10,429 and the Xbox 360 at 2,891 units.
The DS has now officially crossed the 22 million mark in Japan, according to Media Create.
