The first big war was Nintendo vs Sega. I couldn't stand Sega and loved my NES, SNES, and N64. 3D0 showed up and it was a joke in software and died out quietly. Sony showed up with a Playstation. Zelda, Metroid, Mario Resident Evil series updated, andRE4. Gamecube heaven. Xbox showed up and well I had mixed emotions. I stood by my PS2 more then anything,but I love American made things or at least created by Americans in this case.(buti will never buy a *** car)On the other hand I don't like Microsoft and there hold on the software market and operating systems. I wish they had more competition and didn't steal so much from Apple. /rant off. Halo 2 came along and my buddies loved it, I was deep in Socom 1 and 2 though. I purchased a used Xbox for $100 bucks and till this day, i've owned only 4 games on it. Thats including Halo 2. Socom 2 seamed alot more fun for me though. My xbox now resides in a taped up box. Now I own a PS3 and love it. Sony rocks.

So it was Nintendo vs Sega. Then nintendo vs Sony. Now its Sony vs Microsoft with Nintendo making huge sales in the background. IF this was a fight it looks like Sony and MS are killing each other while Nintendo sits back and watchs to kill the last standing of the two. Nintendo in the green, SOny and MS both in the red in there gaming departments. Now in 13 years Which one of these three will still be with us?

What electronics or entertainment company will push out an all new system? How bout Samsung, IBM, Intel, Disney, Apple. All these and more have the ability to create a system for gaming.

Honestly, I see Nintendo around in 2020, as well as Sony and MS. But I believe another will surface.

The 3 companies will still duke it out

Apple will enter the race again, but fail

The videogame companies will be bought out by the bigger companies.

I honestly see one of the following

Square-Enix

SEGA Sammy

Konami

I don't know why the heck people keep listing electronic companies to get into the market, there was only one sucessful one while the rest were total failures. They don't have the resources to bring in developers. SEGA/ Nintendo had the arcades, Microsoft had the PC gaming market. SONY just got lucky due to the fact that the Saturn was next to impossible to develop for and the N64 used cartheridges. Also I don't know why people would want them, I'd prefer a console that has a solid first party line-up. :)

Nintendo and MS are still in $ony tanks because the ps3,ps4,psp2 and pscowsreallyarebuyingthiscrap all fail miserable due to lack of dev support and high pricing.

It's said that even a week is a long time in politics. Well, 13 years is a hell of a long time in business.

I don't think the big 3 will still be making consoles then. I can see 1 or 2 of them still at it perhaps, but I think 13 years is too long to count all these firms into an industry which, let's face it, is extremely volatile and extremely young.

We might have another console market crash on our hands in the next few years, the ingredients of the first one certainly seem to be replicating themselves (too expensive, a growing commercialisation of the industry, a proliferation of poor licensed software), it could be once again the industry becomes so profitable and popular that everyone tries to climb aboard and crashes the train.

Of course, it might not, just wanting to throw out scenarios which problematize the assumption everything will be the same 13 years from now.

I can also see 2 of the big 3 going under (Sony's having a few financial problems atm, Nintendo is sitting pretty on a profit but the market has shown their a volatile company whose luck can change). So I'd be hesistant to call anyone a sure thing (except maybe Microsoft).

The big 3 will still be there, though they won't be anywhere near where Nintendo is. Sega may even try entering the race again with a much updated Dreamcast, but all that remains to be seen.

Very true, if it wasn't for the Wii their would've been a game crash or a massive reccession, hell it happened in Japan until the DS came out.

I said it once and I'll say it again, if the arcade industry either:

A. Dies

B. Sky Rockets

We will see a system from SEGA Sammy.

Sony will have the best console out from hardware and capabilities. They always have launched the best console for it's time. I'm sure the other 2 will still be around too.

By then guys, gaming won't be exclusive to a series of systems.

I see the following making a system:

Square-Enix Sony

Nintendo

Microsoft tries to take a different market

And it might seem strange but if Microsoft does have huge popularity in the future, than Nintendo and Sony have no choice but to work together.... again.

Heck I hear even Nintendo is attempting to buy Sega-Sammy, so who knows.

If things don't change soon, Nintendo will blow away the competition and destroy Sony and kill Microsoft every so slowly untill Nintendo is the only console left. It actually would be alot better that way! You wouldn't have to buy multiple systems and all the game swould come out for your system and everyone would be happy (besides the guys at Microsoft and Sony)

P.S I'm not a fanboy of any Console, I just go wiht the one that looks like the most fun.

No, look at the history of the N64. Nintendo is always capable of being corrupt again.

Competition = Good

Monopoly = Bad.. Microsoft Bad

It would probosbly be wiser to ask if there will even be consoles in 2020. The shift has already started towards consoles as PCs. By 2020 I dont think the biz will be recognizable.

Sadly but I think EA will enter console race and that is bad casuals buy systems mainly for things like sports and they will flock to EA and then EA will monopolize the console area like they did with NFL

A company that's been around for over 118 years isn't going to sell out. Besides, they're seeing massive success. If Sony or Microsoft were just gaming companies, they'd be about a bankrupt as can be.

I think the PS3's run will end in 2017. The 360's run will end in 2013and the Wii wll be done in 2011.

I think the PS3 will literally switch roles with Nintendo and MS in 2013 and 2014. MS and Nintendo will release new games systems and PS3 will compete against those 2( XBox 720 or Wii2). It will be the cheapest console available and have large library of games. PS3 will compete with PS4, 720 wii2 much like PS2 is doing now. I know the names suck.

FlamingFlamingo

They can't even get developers on their OS. How will they get them on a gaming console? I seriously can't understand why people keep saying Apple. If you want to launch a console and you need support. Plus why do people want electronics companies to enter the market? What about game publishers who you know.....make games? I mean shouldn't that what us gamers would want?

Personally I know there aren't too many that can do it.

However Square-Enix has shown intrest.

EA has enough financial backings.

SEGA-Sammy owns the arcade industry.

And Konami's profits are sky rocket having them making over a billion every financial year.

So I could see one of them jumping in. :)

Whoever the competitors are they need to hire some of the original Sega hardware engineers to create a stable console. If you have noticed over the years the market leaders always had $hitty hardware in terms of reliability:

Atari: Joysticks too damn fragile, crumble in your hand.

NES: Had to play with door open, or blow/rub cartridges constantly to play.

PS1: Turn upside down to play correctly, or put sumthin heavy on top of disc tray.

PS2: Disc-read errors, overheating

360: Overheating

The only era with decent hardware was the 16-bit era where the Sega Genesis and SNES were head-to-head in the console wars...no room for hardware errors in the face of strong competition. GREAT FOR GAMERS!!!! Those were the good ole' days!

Game On...

Well if the ps4 and/or the ps5 fail like the ps3 didthen sony wont be around for the year 2020.

I wonder what video games will be like in 2020, maybe like...virtual reality! that would be sweet.

PC gaming will be stronger than now, and continue to dominate then flourishing Chinese and Korean gaming markets.

MS, Nintendo, and possibly Sony. Apple will also try, but I really doubt it will do well.

Gaming systems will become less and less like consoles and more like PCs, but smaller system will continue to try to get in from companies like Disney.

None will do well.

Nintendo will have a strong collaboration with Apple

this is the breakdown:

Nintendo = Apple = OS N

Xbox = microsoft = windows x

PS = Sony = Linux

Watch out ... if Apple and nintendo got together ... its going to give microsoft and sony some serious nightmares ...

I was too young to care... :lol: All I know was that I had both systems and a ton of games. Its never been the same with dueling system being damn near equal and doing a great job trying to 1up each other (WITH GAMES!!!). MK2 may be better on the SNES but the Genesis had the processor to handle Madden properly...It was a win-win situation, a gamers delight!

Lets see.

SONY leaves the hardware business after the dismal PS3, so they won't be around in 2020. They be making tvs only by that date the way things are currently going for them.

Nintendo will still be in business with their newest console that they will release around 2017. It will be named the Wii 2 and will have the best graphics ever and improve upon the current Wii's abilities.

Microsoft will leave the scene when they realize people do not want them messing up the video game business the way they have done in the computer one.

Sega reenters gaming with the death of sony and microsoft.

ps3s burn in landfills. Many of them unpurchased.
