http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-system-failure-article Out of the 20 consoles they get for repair on average 12 are xboxes and 8 are PS3's. Both consoles have problems over time with haet issues because of non- lead soilder. 60/40 split between xbox and PS3 repairs. Thank god for a three year warranty and not just a one year one!

This supports my link in that alot of those PS3'S are just over a year old. How long is the PS3 warranty again?

Just incase anyone is keeping a running tally, the 360's failure rate is (source and date in brackets):

-3-5% industry average (MS, LTD)
-33% (former EB employee, Jul '07)
-16% (SquareTrade report, Feb '08 )
-54% (GI poll, Aug 09)
-~60% (DF article, Aug 09)

and for the PS3:

-3-5% industry average (Sony, LTD)
-10% (GI poll, Aug 09)
-~40% (DF article, Aug 09)

I believe this is what staticticians would refer to as a "cluster****".

PBSnipes

They actually said a 60/40 split of the repair jobs.

In the article it says that four red lights is critical failure when it isn't. If someone is talking about lawsuites, they should get their facts straight.

Whether YLOD is common or not, this lawsuit was bound to happen. It doesn't matter if it's 5% or 100% as long as there's 1 person who thinks that they can use YLOD as a means of surviving the bad economy or just flat out making an easy buck.

Considering the "workshop" in the article is independent and the 360 does have a 3 year warranty..wouldn't it be safe to assume they are only seeing a very small portion of RROD's?

Why would anybody send a console to them to get fixed if it voids your warranty?

This story proves nothing.

"Colchester Computers" is independent as far as i know the same as Console Doctor now as you stated the 360 has a 3 year warranty so who is going to pay these guys to fix it when they can ship it of to M$ for free.lol Frankly i'm surprised they get so many 360's it just goes to show how many out of warranty 360 owners refuse to pay M$ absurd repair price.

If I could post a million of these links it still would not balance out with daily RROD posts. The lawsuit link seems to support some of what was said. If 54% keeps coming up then some people can take what they dish out too.

Ya it kind of does, who is going to pay £60 for these guys to repair your 360 when M$ will replace them for free ? the only people i can see is the people who are out of warranty where as with the PS3 if it breaks after a year these guys will repair it for £70 instead of Sony's £100 ( not sure never had to pay but i heard it was £100+)

I actually thought they'd have more broken PS3's then 360's because of that reason to be honest :?

I think the following paragraph from the article is quite relevant to this:

Clearly, the PS3 warranty situation is of concern, and there's a mammoth amount of reading to sift through in this Eurogamer thread, which in its latter pages coughs up an interesting perspective. Following a piece on the BBC's One Show, there is a powerful legal argument that suggests that the length of the manufacturer's warranty is irrelevant in face of the all-powerful Sales of Good Act. Maybe - just maybe - if enough people make a fuss about this, Sony will re-evaluate its current one-year coverage so people don't have to jump through hoops to ensure a reasonable lifespan for their premium-priced games machines.Eurogamer

To be fair I think as with my TV you can go to the Sony Style website and extend your warranties as long as you are under one year.

Uh people that buy their 360s from third parties such as ebay or craigslist or what have you. I have a 3rd party warranty service myself. And it doesn't matter if it voids the warranty, if they are sending it to a 3rd party the warranty probably does not cover that console any more. Duh?

Things break. Anyhow with the slim being smaller could this happen more often?

The slim uses smaller chipsets that generate less heat than the fats, it should happen less

so they reduced the GPU from 90nm?

"Colchester Computers" is independent as far as i know the same as Console Doctor now as you stated the 360 has a 3 year warranty so who is going to pay these guys to fix it when they can ship it of to M$ for free.lol Frankly i'm surprised they get so many 360's it just goes to show how many out of warranty 360 owners refuse to pay M$ absurd repair price.micky4889
Those who bought a 360 between November 22nd, 2005 and August 30th, 2006.The warranty is over for them.

Apparently Sony has a class action lawsuit already in the pipes.http://www.lawyerseek.com/Practice/Consumer-Protection-C21/Playstation-3-Yellow-Light-of-Death-P212/

ceruxx

Whether YLOD is common or not, this lawsuit was bound to happen. It doesn't matter if it's 5% or 100% as long as there's 1 person who thinks that they can use YLOD as a means of surviving the bad economy or just flat out making an easy buck.

Wouldn't it be funny if Sony lost another lawsuit due to faulty hardware? This place would explode with cows in DC...

Yes it's now 45 nm. Also this article was really unexpected. But considering 90% of the people out there tend to claim the PS3 rates is closer to 10% or lower, I find this to be a little off base. I'm not saying it's wrong. But it's just unusual for 1 place to report numbers drastically higher then everywhere else.

Seems a lot like that recent GI poll. Everyone says that the 360 failure rate is 33% then GI says 54%? We'll need more sources confirming these numbers to get a better average.

holy crap why so high? Also Sony should man up like MS and offer three years warranty for YLOD.
