You guys do realize that LAIR has almost double the development time than GeOW?

I'm always seeing comments like " Lems had to wait a whole year for GeOW while we get LAIR in a few months" or " first gen PS3 games look as good as 2nd gen 360 games"

um...last time I checked, PS3 launched a WHOLE YEAR after the 360. So comments like these make no sense at all.

Heavenly Sword was the first game to be announced for next-gen platforms, if I recall.

So you are right, developement of games does not start when the platform is first released, though some people think it does.

So, if Lair was made for so long, why does it look so much worst than Gears ?

If they hadn't even announced the next-gen consoles when you saw it, how could it have been announced for next-gen consoles?

I'm taking about games which were announced for next-gen consoles, and I'm sure I've read HS was one of the first. It started life as a Xbox title of course.

you're partly right that they, ofc, have been starting to make the games before the actual release date. But Cows are also right that they've had shorter time since the final development tool didn't get released until a few months before the ps release.

So I bet they've, the developers, have been able to do a "rough" version of the game on a proxy tool, but had to wait for the proper tool to really specify the game for the ps3

i didnt say it was announced for nextgen consoles....if i remember correctly i think the game was put under an xbox title then after a while they took it off the site completly and then put it under a 360 title once the Xbox 360 was announced... i know the game hasnt hit the 10yr mark but i heard they scratched their original idea and started all over on the game with a totally different envoirnment and story. Just compare the first and the latest trailer for this game and ull know what i mean. Also i really hope it comes out beacuse it does look like a great game :D

And thus the power of UE3 is found. A 30-man development team can make Gears of War in 2 years... impressive. Just imagine what Mass Effect, and Too Human will be like -- each having well over 2 years of development time with over 100 people working on each game.

Nope, at X05 when they first showd off the trailer Cliffy B said "we've had the developer's kits for about a month now".

Sony released their Alpha kits in late 2004 and their Beta, late summer 2005. Not to mention the fact that you don't need a dev kit to start making a game, all they provide is real world representation of hardware capabilities, which developers already had a concept of what these systems are capable of. Heavenly Sword is an example of that. I believe LAIR started early 2005 on a PS3 kit.

Well, final ps3 dev kits for the ps3 only came out around the launch of the 360 (if not after). So assuming they started a bit before the final dev kits came out, lair will have been in development for only 2 years...

Dark Sector was the first annouced Next gen game (2004). Long before any othe consoles were reveiled. However, there are several titles that were reconstructed for the next gen consoles around this time. Kameo, Heavenly Sword, PDZ and Too Human, to name a few.

Wrong, they need the final dev kit or the game would look like it was worked on the alpha dev kit. Do you know how week the alpha dev kit was? It ran on a 2.4Ghz cell and had a GPU twice as week as the actual RSX... Plus the final dev kits came in around august of 2006... And even if they did start in early 2005, they would need the extra time to take advantage of the final dev kit...

You think Facor 5 was sitting around, twirling their thumbs while waiting for the final dev kits? You guys are making it seem as if these kits play a major role in the development of a game.  Factor 5's engine and concept was built prior because they already had a concept of how powerful the PS3 would be. How different do you think the Beta and Final kits are?

Lair looks way better then gears of war..if you lemming jus open ya eyes and watch the video..some are really  jus in denial..and final dev kits wasnt given to them yet..ps3 is a very difficult system to program..they barely released the tool edge like 2 month ago i think so they can get the best results on the ps3.... devlopers is still tryin to learn how to get a better grasp of the hardware. And i think by next year most devlopers will get the hang of it...lair accomplish a lot and hope other devlopers will make games for the ps3 first then port to the 360..

People fail to realise that all the sound, animations, textures, maps, skins, engine and just generally most of the game is actually build on a PC. Development kits are needed to put everything together, but even if developers don't have them they can still work on the game.

First off, I have no idea when F5 started developing Lair.   Does anyone else?

Second, the UE3 engine was being developed for years before Gears came out.

Just because a game has been in development for a long time does not mean it wont suck. Look at perfect Dark Zero. I waited years for it to come, and when it finally did, I was insulted and appauled. My point is NOT that I want Lair to suck. I am just saying that time might actually not mean much. I do not know. Lair might actually be amazing.

i thikn they are the same. gears of war has been in devolpement for 2 and half years, some ppl say it has been in dev for 3yrs.

Nope, at X05 when they first showd off the trailer Cliffy B said "we've had the developer's kits for about a month now".

are you sure about that? because  when i first seen shots of Gears of war i was still playing UT and that was back in 2004. btw here is a quote from a link that proves that and here is the link

"The first public glimpse of Gears of War came in 2004, in the form of renders from Epic's new Unreal Engine 3. Prior to this, Epic had teased the gaming community with hints about a "next big thing", a brand new franchise completely separate from Unreal, built on their next-generation Engine. However, the history and pre-production of Gears has its roots deep within Unreal."

Also people are forgetting that the PS3 was supposed to be released spring 06, so technically all developers should have had their final development kits for a year now.

Factor 5 and Epic did not get their devs kits at the same time though. Most PS3 devs (I don't know if this includes Factor 5 or not) got their kits when the PS3 was suppose to launch, or after

When did Gears Of War start development?.messiah1

GEars of war developement started early 2004 right after unreal tournament 2004. It had a show at e3 05, which won many years. Lair has been in the same developement starting in early 2004. HOw is 3 years of development almost double 4 years of development?

I'm always seeing comments like " Lems had to wait a whole year for GeOW while we get LAIR in a few months" or " first gen PS3 games look as good as 2nd gen 360 games"

um...last time I checked, PS3 launched a WHOLE YEAR after the 360. So comments like these make no sense at all.
