Well duh, but I'm wondering if there's any other reason as to why they'd drop the price, such as making room for another upgrade, kind of like the Elite.a_ratchet_fan
I seriously doubt Sony would stoop that low. That sounds something like MS would do.

I never understood the 80gig rumor...really what would be the point when the 60gig PS3 can be upgraded whenever you want that extra space.-Sir-Poof-
In my opinion, there is really no need for an 80GB version anywhere. If I didnt have a PS3 already, and if I just had to spend 600 (assuming the price cut is for real), then I would buy the 60GB version and spend the extra 100 bucks on a HDD that is bigger than 80GB and just instal it myself.Spartan8907
If Sony were to bring the 80GB PS3 to the States it would most likely to replace the 60GB. The wholesale cost between the two drive is probably nothing. It alos makes it look like your are getting more for your money. gmastersexay
My question is...why would they need to offer, or consumers need to own, an 80gb console? Even if there were some reason for it, why not higher? What's 20 extra gig when there's larger hard drives readily available?
As for Sony moving a top of the line model in the 60gb's place, I think that makes little sense. i don't know why they would do that. Even though it shouldn't affect the "buyability" of the 60gb, they should forsee consumers feeling like the 80gb is the one to own. If they are price dropping at this stage, they should price drop and be done with it. Adding extra models for an even higher cost seems entirely counterproductive.
