You know, this price-drop just made me think of something....

If this price-drop is in fact permanent and official, then I just thought of something... remember when there started being rumors of the 80 GB PS3 coming to the US, and how they'd likely lower the 60 GB price to the price of the old 20 GB price?  For some reason, Sony went quiet on this issue shortly after.  Nobody really knew why.

Now, fast-forward to now, a few days before E3.  ... Could this be one of the things they've been saving up for E3?  It would certainly make sense, and the timing of this price-drop would certainly support this theory.  So what I'm saying is maybe Sony's doing this price-drop so that they'll replace the top-of-the-line model with the 80 GB one.

However, while this would certainly be interesting, it also makes me slightly worried... for quite a few people, the $500 20 GB model looked quite tempting.  Unfortunately for the ones who didn't spring for it fast enough, Sony ceased to sell it, which many people deemed a stupid move on their part.  Well, what I'm wondering is... could Sony make the same mistake with the 60 GB one?  And yes, this would most definitely be a mistake; people have been waiting for a sizeable price-drop for ages, and if they did the same thing with the 60 GB model as they did with the 20 GB model while leaving the 80 GB model at $600... that would piss a lot of prospective buyers off, including me, as it would act as a barrier  for more would-be PS3 gamers to join the fold.

So... what do you think of this?  Could this be the real reason why they're lowering the price?

Well duh, but I'm wondering if there's any other reason as to why they'd drop the price, such as making room for another upgrade, kind of like the Elite.

I seriously doubt Sony would stoop that low. That sounds something like MS would do.

I never understood the 80gig rumor...really what would be the point when the 60gig PS3 can be upgraded whenever you want that extra space.

They did it in Korea, so why not standardize the process.

I agree with you 100%.  I've already replaced the standard 60 GB HDD with a 160 SATA HDD.  It gives me soo much more lee-way.

I doubt it... The only difference with the Korean 80GB sku was that it was 80GB and had some video on-demand service, which I'm sure will find it's way onto the rest of the worlds PS3's. I seriously don't think Sony will release another sku where the only improvment is the HDD space. And not even that much of an HDD space improvment. 20GB surprisingly gets used up pretty quick :0

In my opinion, there is really no need for an 80GB version anywhere. If I didnt have a PS3 already, and if I just had to spend 600 (assuming the price cut is for real), then I would buy the 60GB version and spend the extra 100 bucks on a HDD that is bigger than 80GB and just instal it myself.

Yeah, but for some reason the average consumer that doesn't have a clue what a CPU is probably won't have enough technological savvy to realize this.  This is why MS can get away with sticking with proprietary drives.  The average customer doesn't know that they could buy a 250 GB internal hard-drive for less than $80.

If Sony were to bring the 80GB PS3 to the States it would most likely to replace the 60GB. The wholesale cost between the two drive is probably nothing. It alos makes it look like your are getting more for your money.

Hmm... I agree with you, but at the same time I don't.  There were multiple reasons for why they got rid of the 20 GB model, one of them purportedly being that they just didn't want a Core system (a version of the system which is missing features which can't be added on later).  So unless they add features other than a slightly-upgraded HDD to the 80 GB (if my theory holds true) then what would be the purpose of chucking the 60 GB one?  Oh wait, I just think I answered that one for myself; no one would see any incentive to get the 80 GB one.  So the only way Sony could get people to buy an 80 GB one would be to add features that can't be found on the 60 GB one.

In a way, this argument also makes sense.  Sony was talking about making their PS3's like computers for a while.  They'd make actual hardware ugrades for future models of PS3s but the games, which are the primary use of the PS3, would always have to be designed for the lowest common denominator.  However, the extra CPU or even extra GPU power could be used for other purposes... So what if they plan to follow up on this?

My question is...why would they need to offer, or consumers need to own, an 80gb console? Even if there were some reason for it, why not higher? What's 20 extra gig when there's larger hard drives readily available?

As for Sony moving a top of the line model in the 60gb's place, I think that makes little sense. i don't know why they would do that. Even though it shouldn't affect the "buyability" of the 60gb, they should forsee consumers feeling like the 80gb is the one to own. If they are price dropping at this stage, they should price drop and be done with it. Adding extra models for an even higher cost seems entirely counterproductive.
