Your 2011 GOTY? Guess what. It's not as good as Rayman Origins.

Now that that provocative title is out of the way, let me continue.

Rayman Origins is one of the most beautiful and fun games you will ever play. The gameplay is fast paced, graphics are perfect, and co-op is one of the best of the generation. It has variety in spades and offers great replay values and incentives to play.

You owe it to yourself to buy this game.

It's a three way tie between this, DXHR, and Pokemon Black for my 2011 GOTY.

Very true. It's such a great game, can't wait for Rayman Legends! The art style is some of the best I've ever seen in platformers.

It's been $20 multiple times, and let me say this again, it's worth twice the price of admission. $20. For one of the best games of the generation.

Well,I´m sure it is,but that´s probably to folks that really like platformers,it´s not really a genre that resonates that much with me.

Alright, I won't bug you anymore about it. :P One more time though, even I haven't been a fan of platformers since SM64 besides a few Ape Escapes, but SMG and Rayman are proof that the genre is not only alive but ahead of the curve.

I'm not too big into straight platformers (after NSMBW, DKCR and SMG2 I've kind of grown tired of the genre while still appreciating it's excellence). I tried the demo and while I'd probably play it and enjoy it, I just don't have the money these days to be buying anything short of the most excellent games I know I will play for 30+ hours. And NIER was my 2011 GOTY... so no.

Rayman Origins is over rated. Its praise is absurd, its a great game with fantastic graphics. Its not the best platformer this gen by a long shot however.

You act like it has some stiff ass competition. It has Galaxy 2 and Super Meat Boy as far as excellence. Everything else usually peaks at really good, maybe kind of great.

Great game...but a little bit frustrating on later levels, it was really fun and all, but not that amazing, however, call me a fan, i'm really hyped for Legends.

My personal GOTY for 2011 was KOF XIII.

I got it for $10, it is a lot of fun but not a GOTY game. Just fun to pop in, plan for an hour, and do something else. I am glad that I have it as part of my collection now.

Frankly I think Galaxy 1, Donkey Kong Country Returns and Kirby's Epic Yarn are all better games (welll Epic Yarn is debatable in difficulty I suppose).I also feel that the Sonic Rush games on the NDS were more interestingly designed despite probably not being better as a whole. The game is really really good, the game isn't the best platformer ever let alone this gen however. Better exist and I still have a lot of platformers left to play too.

The only platformer I would say that's better than it all time is SMG. I haven't played 2, but that's even better I assume. Even then, one is side-scrolling, one is 3D. However, one thing that could set it apart from SMG in a potential debate is the amazing co-op and how Tricky Treasure runs are more fun than Cosmic Comets. And I really doubt the second player obtaining a Luma in SMG2 changes anything. I think 3rd would be Frogger Temple of Doom.

Yoshi's Island is GODLY. I love me some Yoshi's Island. I blame that game for ruining my enjoyment of the new super mario bros games. It's bad enough those games come off uninspired at times, but they are also vastly inferior to a game from the 90s to boot. Yoshi's Island styIin on 2D platformers since 1990 whenever the f*ck

Nope, that would be SpaceChem. It's sad really, SpaceChem stole the show on January 1 of last year, and no other game came close to beating it throughout the entire year.

It was a really good if you accepted the game wasn't hard. From graphics to creativity in design, to mechanics the actual platforming to soundtrack it was a mighty fine game. People automatically ascociate easy with terrible. The game was one of the best made platformers in an extremely long time and the soundtrack was stellar.

It is my favourite game ever :P

The NSMB games just need new art. They wouldn't feel so generic if they didn't look so generic. I don't think they are mediocore (well the DS one is) at all. There is good design in there despite nothing coming close to SMW which they are trying to mimic.

It was insulting. It's only claim to greatness was the creative visuals, and some clever levels here and there. Mechanically it's pretty by the book, the lack of challenge makes the basic platforming just a going through the motions routine, and some of the turn into a vehicle segments were just messy on an interface level. A light game is fine if done in an interesting way(for instance there is no difficulty in Journey, yet that's entertaining in its own right), but Epic Yarn essentially plays itself without really satisfying you with anything other than "aww that looks cute".

DKCR I can get behind. Some chaotic level design and lame motion movement aside the platforming and level design in that game is pretty damn good.

SMG hooked me long after its story was done (60 stars), but it did have dreadfully boring galaxies like Dreadnought Galaxy. Origins has none of that. I wanted to pick up Epic Yarn, but the difficulty put me off, and DKC is after SMG2 on my platformer list. Rayman Origins also has incentives to go for more Lums and to go off the beaten path in a way that hasn't been done so well since LocoRoco 2. Also, besides its stellar level design, there's not too much incentive to go for more stars in SMG. Origins has that incentive with the Electoons and characters and stages to unlock.

I think the soundtrack was approaching Galaxy level. It was really good. Different but super well put together. Better than Donkey Kong, better than Rayman, better than any other platformer this gen besides the galaxy games. There aren't many games with awesome paino soundtracks either. In terms of mechanics I thought it was great. You have your jump as always, your float, your quick pound, your speed up (which was that adorable car), and your multi purpose grab which lent itself to lots of other gameplay ideas. Then of course there was the power up which lent extra variety to the gameplay, As I will say, the game is really easy for a seasoned gamer but if you don't mind that its not a challenge if you play platformers its great. The act of not being able to die also does not bother me, losing all your beads is worse than dying, its a direct punishment for sloppy play yet doesn't break the flow using a useless life mechanic. I also didn't find the vehicles messy at all. I don't see what is messy about 2 button and a tilt interfaces unless you suck ass at gaming. Tilt to aim home, press button to fire water, not exactly rocket science. :|

I enjoyed what the game brought to the table, I thought it was light while still requiring one to pay attention if they wanted to get everything and it was a technical marvel in graphics and sound.

What beaten path? Did we play the same game? It was so obvious where stuff was hidden in that game I felt insulted. As far as I'm concerned, the reason to play any platformer is always the fun levels, I honestly could not give less of a shiit about extra characters with different pallete swaps and slightly different animations. The beginning of origins is also boring. Like really boring. Epic Yarn isn't for people who want a challenge. Was never suppose to be a difficult game so its best not to play it expecting one.

Mechanically it's pretty by the book, the lack of challenge makes the basic platforming just a going through the motions routine, and some of the turn into a vehicle segments were just messy on an interface level. A light game is fine if done in an interesting way(for instance there is no difficulty in Journey, yet that's entertaining in its own right), but Epic Yarn essentially plays itself without really satisfying you with anything other than "aww that looks cute".jg4xchamp
Did you actually try getting through the levels with a high score? The basis of the game was collecting gems... and to do so well was a significant challenge. As a basic platformer, it was a joke in terms of difficulty. But that would be like saying Forza's AI sucks when playing a time trial.

I think the soundtrack was approaching Galaxy level.

ActicEdge

Not only do I not care, but I never commented on it. I like a good soundtrack to a game as much as the next guy, but that's the last thing on my mind when judging a game to be honest.

Fair enough. I can admit to it having some good ideas. But the fact that the game is entirely going through the motions with no real punishment(the bead thing doesn't do it for me) makes the game painfully boring. I'll give it all the credit for being cute and clever. But in terms of the overall game the easy nature kills it. Makes the gameplay experience so hollow.

I did fairly well collecting gems, and I still wouldn't call it a significant challenge. I'd still call it a snore fest.

Rented it on 360 and sent it back right away. The game is so good I didn't want to waste it on a rent lol. Will buy during the Steam summer sale 100%.

SMG is a ways above Rayman Origins. The game is really nothing stellar design wise. Its good, its fun but that's about it really. I personally thought that Donkey Kong and Epic Yarn were better games. SMG2 is in another league and Origins is not a match for Yoshi's Island in the 2D platformer category. Like not at all.

ActicEdge

The hidden Lemtoons were well done, and even if the characters were mostly palette swaps, they were never too far off being unlocked. The coins were also extremely well done and challenging to get at moments. The beginning was just as amazing as the end. I see no change in the fun it grants a player. Btw, have you played LocoRoco 2 yet?

no it isn't. people always say "the challenge is in the gems", but it's not. maybe it's not as easy as not giving a damn about it, but it's pretty damn easy to get the gold medal at the end, especially because it's so easy to control where the wheel will hit at the end of the level. without even trying to go for gold, i left like 4 levels to go back to. don't get me wrong, i love the game and have beaten it twice (one alone and one with my cousin), but there is no "secret challenge in getting gold medals" in it.

I'm not big on collecting things, but I appreciated it for what it was.

Really? Man, soundtrack is tied with graphics for me if not higher. I think that in a platformer a good soundtrack sets the mood of the world they are trying to create. I guess difference of opinion but man, a lot of great games set up their tone through good use of sound design, for me personally its really important.

I certainly can agree its easy, I adjusted my expectations accordingly though, its a game much more about collection and light exploration that it is about platforming challenge and I enjoyed it for though. I wish more games would adapt a style that wasn't lives personally. I'd love a harder sequel as long as they adjusted the tone of the game along with it.

there is a moment where it happens, and that would be during the shooter levels. it's actually putting me off rayman legends, despite the rest of the game's amazing level design. it's exactly that clash between quality and incompetence that makes it horrible. also, how is there a red big luma? you have to pick it to turn the other ones red. THAT PIC IS FAKE.
