Or just the ones you actually played games/were alive during.

Anyway, for me it goes:

4th: SEGA Megadrive six button pad

5th: SEGA Saturn pad (the smaller one)

6th: Gamecube pad

7th: Xbox 360 pad

Now how about you SW?

Intellivision : First attempt at a dpad, beat Atari 2600, more buttons

NES : Sega copied it with the mastersystem, but that gen NES set the standard

SNES : More buttons, simple. Sega tried to fix that with a 6 button genesis, didn't do the trick, still it was a close runner up.

PSOne : The Dual Shock. It brought Twin Analog to the world, no batteries needed to rumble.

PS2 : Tighter Analogs, longer cord, analog buttons that read 256 degrees of pressure sensitivity, rumble.

PS3 : DS3. Even Tighter Analogs, Sixaxis, Better Rumble than last gen, wireless, no external batteries needed.

---------

Cool ideas, and runner ups :

N64 for having that great analog stick, to bad the Dpad and Analog stick forced developers to decide to omit Dpad use in most games. No Streetfighter games available, and lack of 2D games in general due to this design. Rumble needed batteries. Still, had years of great times with it.

Dreamcast,. Came out years later to start last gen...but Sega made a mistake. Sega still went with Nintendo's One analog idea instead of Sony's twin analog scheme. Rumble like N64 required batteries still! Had to take out rumble pak to use VMU. Cord at the bottom of the controller, wtf?

Wii : Fantastic idea, but still needed refinement. 2009's Motion plus seems to add a lot, but due to the lack of hardware power, we don't see the FPS's ownage we imagined back in 2005-2006 like we thought.

Xbox : Terrible initial controller, Type S was a great improvement.

Gamecube : Wonderful controller, Dpad was a Gameboy Advance Micro sized dpad. As you can see, I love my Dpads. The Z button was uncomfortable after prolongued use, but otherwise an exceptional controller!

360 : Super awesome controller, the one FLAW the TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE Dpad kills it. I'm a hardcore gamer from yester year, and I love my fighters. M$, fix this problem next gen!

Rockband/Guitar Hero. Fun. Nuff said.

NES controller..it looked pretty damn cool. The NES Zapper is also a notable mention for obvious reasons, lol.

Genesis controller. I always felt the way Nintendo places the A and B buttons was weird on the SNES, DS, and C1assic Controllers.

The Gamecube controller. N64 controller. The PS (all three gens, they handle the same). SNES controller. I have yet to find the best controller for Wii though, minus the Gamecube controller.

advantage

Still my all time favorite controller... So many games fell to the might of the advantage. Mike Tyson fell, Ganon fell, many iterations of Bowser... ugh, the list goes on and on. Mother Brain fears the sight of this picture. C'mon people, adjustable turbo?!? amazing.

That Gamecube controller is the only controller I ever really liked. It was just so perfect (the D-pad was a little small though), and the wavebird owns all.

3rd gen: NES advantage or the powerglove lol

4th gen: Sega Genesis 3 button

5th gen: PlayStation dual-shock

6th gen: Dreamcast standard controller

7th gen: PlayStation six-axis/dualshock3 - what can i say i think the xbox360 controller is just an immitation of the ps3 controller at best. plus the battery built in is much better quality

NES SNES Dualshock Dualshock 2 Dual Shocks 3 I just like the simple design of the Dualshock and that I've been using it for most of my life, so I'm used to it. I don't mind the Xbox 360 controller, but it just feels different to me though. I think that it might be because it's larger.

3rd gen: NES. I doubt the Master System pad was better. 4th gen: SNES? I need more experience with the Genesis and SNES to be sure. I owned a Genesis at one point, but I don't remember how the pad was. 5th gen: I didn't ever own a PS1, but the Dualshock was probably the best. The N64 pad was...not too good. 6th gen: Gamecube. 7th gen: 360 I guess, but I haven't used a DS3 yet.

SNES: Set the standard for face and shoulder buttons.

Dualshock: Basically a SNES controller with two extra shoulder buttons, grips and dual analogues. Best design ever.

Dualshock 2: Still the best.

Dualshock 3: Still the best.

I HATE the dualshock.

Worst design, cramps my hands, small, too light, horrible triggers. Grr.

Good thing the only game I plan on getting for my ps3 soon involves a wheel, that would be the godly gt5.
