Poll Your favorite era in gaming (37 votes)

For me it’s the late 90s for sure. 1997-1999 were some of the best years in gaming. FF7, Ocarina, MGS, StarCraft, Super Mario 64, Resident Evil 2, Xenogears, you can go on and on and on. Although these games don’t hold up that well now, for their time they were groundbreaking. What about you, SW? Your favorite era in gaming?

90s or early 00s for me. If I had to choose i'd give the nod to the 90s.

The 90’s was the best due to the SNES, Neo-Geo, and arcade games.

It has never been better than it is right now imo. I just love how many amazing indie games are out all the time that are just amazing (Like the simply sublime Enshrouded and Crystal Project), I love PC gamepass giving me the ability to never have to buy another xbox game or machine, Sony is putting most of the best stuff on PC, I have zero physical media of any kind so my home is immaculate, and Xenoblade X Definitive edition is simply amazing in every way. What is not to love about modern gaming? (aside from Nintendo trying to charge for an instruction manual game that is lol)

I think most will probably choose the era they grew up in.

For me it was 90s and early 2000s but I mean those aren’t necessarily the best eras...there’s just naturally a lot of nostalgia with growing up during all of that.

The transition from 2D to proper 3D, new styles of play, the leaps in graphics and technology, features that became standard etc...

Maybe it was more interesting but as far as actual games go it’s probably now. There’s all the newest stuff and old stuff mostly available in some way.

I'm most nostalgic for the 2000s... GameCube, Gameboy Advance, Xbox, Wii, PSP etc. And a lot of my favourite games.

I'm generally enjoying the moment and optimistic about the future, but I'd be lying if I didn't favor a few years on either side of the new millennia, say around 1998-2004 or so.

Yeah it's hard to take issue with the current era. Even with all the business nonsense we are seeing, the games are as good as ever. And yes, the independent and small-scale scene is amazing and the reason I still game at all.

Outside of nostalgia I liked the 90s ,when developers used to show playable demos and shareware mote often like playstation underground and the sort that would be issued every month.

I'm going with the 2000s. While I have lots of cherished memories in the 90s, I'm still partial to to the 2000s.

Take me back to the glory days of 2004... Rome: Total War, GTA San Andreas, Halo 2 and Half Life 2? There can't be a better time for me.

Probably the 2000s for me. That is when I was really getting into gaming so everything was new and exciting. It also felt like graphics and game technology just advanced really quickly during that time.

Like games in almost any generation, it's not about when it was made but about how good a game it is.

Regardless I do find it more difficult to find the really, really old years of gaming to have any gems worth playing (1970's) I do think the 1980's was when it really started to get its act together with game design.

I gamed all the way through the 80s... The back end was superb. That said, the 90s started with the SNES... That console was the alpha and omega of my gaming life.

1990s was the Golden Age of Gaming:

Console Golden Age – 1990 to 1999 – Gen 4 to Gen 6 (Sega Mega Drive to Dreamcast)

Arcade Renaissance – 1991 to 1999 – Arcade revival (Street Fighter II to Dance Dance Revolution)

PC Golden Age – 1992 to 1999 – PC gaming boom (Wolfenstein 3D to Quake III Arena)

The Commodore 64 and Amiga 500 in the 1980s meant a lot to me. And arcade games were so cool back then.

But really, each period has its charm.

90's gaming was like 80's rappers... Important for culture of gaming, but the 2000's gaming was the 90's rappers... Its where all the GOAT's are.

That's how I see it, my child hood was me, my brother, my cousin and my child hood friend from apartment below playing Mortal Kombat 3 on a Sega Genesis after School... But the greatest games I ever played where in the 2000s.

2000s were pretty big. The GTA games alone were a big deal.

All eras have good stuff to offer, but I'd put the 00's at the top. Most devs had figured out 3D by this point, and local multiplayer was still the norm. A good time for fun, arcadey games to play with friends. Even when I try something from this era that I have no nostalgia for, the games don't feel all that dated; graphics are good enough, controls make sense, cameras work, general qol issues aren't bad.
