[QUOTE="jg4xchamp"]The Village in Resident Evil 4. drinkerofjuiceI prefer the church. There was some genuine satisfaction in suplexing cult members. Ikana Canyon in Majora's Mask would be another favorite. Every level in that game is godly. The Village is just an awesome opening, and textbook what a good level in an action game should be like. It's not overly gamey as an environment save things like crates with ammo/herbs(because deranged villagers really need shotgun ammo when they don't use guns), a few different structures and choke points, and my absolute favorite part the way that entire sequence can go from intense, to be absolute insanity depending on your decision as the player.
The Times Square remake in GTA IV.
Particularly because my buddies and I had some pretty freaking amazing moments around that area in multiplayer (Bringing in two police helicopters to extract buddies fighting with the cops on the ground, bullets flying everywhere, sh** exploding, flying in between the buildings, felt like I was in a movie)
And Skyrim was pretty damn beautiful in spots if you ask me.
Some of my favs
The Citadel (Mass Effect series)
Skyrim (Skyrim)
Xcom HQ (Xcom Enemy Unkown)
Charr Starting area (GW2)
Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms ( vanilla WoW)
Shadow Moses island (MGS1 and specially MGS 4)
Arkham City (Batman Arkham City)
so many areas in Mass Effect... The citidel, tuchanka, ilos, my god so many areas.
TheEroica
this.+ Virmire, Omega, Ilium
I could list alot of other stuff but I give the nod to mass effect 1 + 2
I actually adored Morrowind. The whole feel of it was entirely different from what the other RPG's were doing.
Also: Bioshock. Jeezus that place is just amazing. That word is thrown around a lot for 'good' things but Rapture really was an amazing enviroment
Probably every outside location in the Elder Scrolls games (my favorite one though is the Shivering Isle, that place is just fantastic). Mass Effect 2 also has some great outside locations on the different planets. Bad Company 2 had some nice vistas such as the Jungles, but forget the desert and mountain top levels, those were just bad. I'd also say that Arkahm Asylum had a great atmosphere and environement to it, especially given this was really the first time we could truly explore the island and I think they did a great job at reimagining it. Fallout also has a great environment to it, really feels like a post-appocalyptic future.
As for Metro, fvck the tunnels. They were just boring and bland, imo, now the outside specifically the end as well as those weird I guess "dream" sequences now that crushes EVERYTHING the tunnels could do.
Everything in FF7-9, Bravely Default, Zelda OOT, WW, MM, Whsipered World, Kings Quest games, Mass Effect, Shantae 1-2, Fable 1-2-3-Journey, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon etc
The two gaming worlds that overwhelmed me the most with their shear size and content were
-The Great Ocean from the Wind Waker
-The world of Dragon Quest VIII
Uncharted 3 when SPOILER Drake goes into the lost city of the sand and oh god how amazing that view was of the city, the moving statues, amazing music all at the same time, i stood still looking at that city for about 5 minutes lol
I liked that city to a degree as well. Particularly the area with the swimming pool.Uncharted 3 when SPOILER Drake goes into the lost city of the sand and oh god how amazing that view was of the city, the moving statues, amazing music all at the same time, i stood still looking at that city for about 5 minutes lol

Plenty of zones in WoW. Teldrassil, Ashenvale and Feralas are obvious favourites, but I also liked The Barrens, mainly because every time I think of it I remember running along the savanah's listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Zangarmarsh while listening to Gorillaz... Man, good times. There are plenty of other areas in that game as well.. To be honest, every area below level 30 at least was amazing, and most above that were as well.
Kikori Forest from OoT is pretty awesome as well. The village and Seafront in NIER are amazing; Seafront, with the "City of Commerce" background music, was especially relaxing. I'm sure there's plenty more that I love that I've missed though.
There were some great environments in The Precursor Legacy and UC2 and UC3.
In addition to that, I thought Kingdom Hearts' rendition of classic Disney worlds was also pretty sweet. Then there's FFXII, Skyrim, the Sly Cooper series, The Witcher 2, and hell, let's not forget Assassin's Creed. 1 and 2, especially, epitomized authenticity and really engulfed players into a believable, breathing world, so props to UbiMontreal and their researchers for that.
And then there's BioShock as well (and by that I mean practically the entire city of Rapture) -- in sum, there's a very large amount, actually, that I simply can't name off the top of my head atm, but really succeed in captivating with their aesthetics. One day I'll make a list and return to this thread with more, lol.
Alan Wake - The mental institutionR4gn4r0kAlan Wake has some pretty awesome environments. Wanna play it again just for that.
Wtf is wrong with the shadows in that classroom... There are none!Maybe it's time to pay homage to a modded game world. Arma 2's Taviana map is probably one of the most convincing renditions of a Post-Soviet states I've seen in any media.

[QUOTE="Blabadon"]I would love to live in the Forbidden Land.BrunoBRSand eat lizards and fruit for the rest of your life? Yes. That was totally what I meant by that. Obviously with the fact on a spiritual, ever-wandering level, yes I would love to live there. Just roam there until I wanted to leave.

The many areas of this world are so beautifully intertwined

This, definitely. ICO as well.
So many to choose from.
Zeal from Chrono Trigger, many of the areas in FFX and FFXII, the Prime games, a lot of the areas in Yoshis Island, SMG2, MGS3... I could ramble for a while about this one, nothing like some great environment design to pull you into a game.
All of Demon's Souls. Some places in Skyrim. Nepal in Uncharted 2. All of Uncharted 1. Shanghai in Deus EX HR. All of Assassin's Creed 1 & 2. Ilium, Bekenstein, Omega, Citadel, Tushanka,Aiteetc. in Mass Effect 2. Feros in Mass Effect 1.
Besaid Island from Final Fantasy X. I adore the music and the incredibly peaceful atmosphere. It's just a really beautiful place.
I really love beach/oceanic environments in general. It's probably one of the main reasons Chrono Cross is my favorite RPG ever.
