Every new generation comes with it a general plateau of waiting for the games taking advantage of the new hardware. I expect the launch of PS5 and XSeX will be similar. That generally doesn't stop the excitement of a new gen.

Being a buyer of new hardware has its positives and negatives. Negatives generally being that the hardware hasn't been out long enough to have been truly tested for durability, the lack of engaging games that are next specific and potentially the loss of enjoyed features that may be added later.

As for me, I've bought many systems at launch and most remain working to this day. I'm looking to get the PS5 but I'm not too worried about Playstation hardware failing. I'm more worried about most games being cross gen and there not being a big reason to own next gen for some time.

We know a bit as to what XSeX will give us. A form factor and a couple games. We have hear say for PS5 but that's basically it. No prices, no launch dates, no launch lineups. It makes it difficult to make a call on buying at launch.

My current plan is the wait and see approach but I've already started saving for the PS5. No guarantee I'll be buying at launch but I like to be prepared.

What are your plans?

I always like a mid gen refresh. Getting an ultra thin console like the PS2 slim (which I don't see happening anymore) or a more powerful console is always nice. Likewise I feel launch games are mostly trash, except for Nintendo titles.

There also seems to be no reason to get the next Xbox at launch, especially if you have a mid end or higher PC system.

I'm excited to see the following technologies evolve in the coming years:

  • 4K resolution (at 60 fps)
  • HDR
  • Ray tracing

To get a lot of those, I'll be looking into buying a OLED TV this year and I'd be very happy to get a 4K/60 capable graphics card in the coming years.

I'm going to wait a couple of years before getting a PS5. There's a ton of PS4 games I haven't played yet, so there's plenty to keep me entertained.

Also, I'm gonna get a special edition console. I've never gotten one before, I've always bought the stock console, plain black PS4 for example. So if there's a red, white, green, or specific game themed console next gen I'm going for it.

The Xbox Series X will be launching with a bang for me with Halo: Infinite. I plan on preordering the system along with the game so I can have them at launch. I’m very hyped for both the system and the game.

My plans? Ditch Xbox. Jump back to PC gaming, only need a GPU for mah current PC: i7-8700K @ 4.8 Ghz, MSI Z370-A PRO MoBo, 16GB DDR4 3200MHz CL16, Noctua NH-D15 cooler, Corsair 750W RM750x power. SSD+HDD.

... and of course buy a PS5.

Nada.

No reason for me to buy a next-gen console as of now. I'll reconsider if Bloodborne runs at a solid 60fps on PS5.

My PC is decidedly next-get already so I'm set.

I'm gonna stick with my pc for at least a year after the new consoles come out. I'll wait and see what they have to offer. I'm in no rush.

I'll likely wait for a new iteration of PS5 before I buy one, and pick up Xbox Series X in two years as well since Microsoft says all software will be for current and next gen systems for that period.

So I'll wait for a few years before I buy in to next gen.

Luckily if you own a PS5 on release you will taste next gen pretty soon. Godfall is slated only for PS5 and PC so hopefully those dev run wild with their ideas since its not limited by last gen.

My concern with next gen is the long wait for games that I want. I bought a PS3 for Persona 5, FF versus XIII and a Suikoden game. never knew I had to wait for 6 years for the announcement of Persona 5. FF versus XIII was announced as a PS3 exclusive turned into FFXV 10 years later and for Suikoden, idk what the fk those dev doing on the NDS. Suikoden Tierkreis is not even in the same world. I refuse to acknowledge Tierkreis existence. Still, Bloodborne 2 might get announced someday so I guess I will stick around and purchase ps5.

Right now, I'm happy what I have for the time being and I will buy PS5 when the console matures enough to warrant a purchase but that will be 2/3 years after launch. My gaming PC spoils me so bad, I see no rush to go buy PS5 day one and both my PS4/Nintendo Switch is more then enough but on my PS4 side, I still have much to do anyways. TLOU2 & Ghost of Tsushima are all coming to PS4, so yeah.

My 2700X has been really great for me in terms of gaming and since my I do more then game on my PC, the extra cores and threads do help for making content stuff and upload vids is what Ryzen benefits and only go with Ryzen for content stuff. But if all you really want to do is just play games, go for Intel.

I'm on X299, really do not see the point moving to a terrible Z390 platform, Intel are not the boss anymore. My concern currently is the same, another dead platform, no upgrade path and was not made for gaming to begin with. Also having to keep the fucker cooled with a 360 radiator is ridiculous, it is pretty noisy.

Depending on games I'll get one of the next gen systems a year or so in. I don't enjoy systems day one as I always prefer a year or so for decent software to come out.

Next gen? I'm already there. Built myself an i7 8700 16GB RAM and an RTX 2080 PC. I'm loving current high end PC features such as Ray Tracing, don't need a new console.

I've a got a Switch, now f Nintendo announced an upgraded Switch....

I'll wait to see how the PS5 builds on the Pro, and may dip based on that performance. As for the Xbox, I have a gaming PC, so i'm good.

If PS5 is fully backwards compatible with PS1-4 games, I will buy one after about 2 years or so. Maybe after the first price cut. If it only plays PS4 games, I will be weighing first and third party support for a few years before making a choice. Or I will skip consoles and focus on PC gaming.

I dunno, I guess I'll pick up an xsx...but I'm just not that excited about next gen. We'll get 4k 60fps games, but I've seen those this gen. Games will essentially be the same as this gen.. yes, bigger worlds (How much bigger than, say, witcher 3 do we need?), faster loading, ray tracing (hardly noticeable) and better textures....but the difference between a next gen game and this one will be the smallest jump yet.

PS5 I will very likely pre-order to get day one. XSX is up in the air at this point.. I went from definite day 1, to meh maybe after there are exclusives, and now I'm at, I'll wait and see what they have to show before making a decision. Ball is in their court on that one. As far as the next Nintendo Switch, I'll probably upgrade to the stronger one when it releases and give my kids the one I have now. I am also looking a little at either a gaming laptop or possibly something like a Steam Machine.

Buying PS5, Upgrading PC. I probably could wait, I've got a OC 1060 6gb. It's fine for 1080p but I would like to play 4k. DBZ kakrot at 4k looks so much better than 1080p.

Not sure yet. Will probably get both XBox and Playstation like I usually do, maybe not at launch though.

Always consider building a gaming PC...but then realise I'm just too lazy to follow through with that plan.

So probably consoles only...again.

Use the website rtings.com before buying a TV for next gen!! Pay attention in particular to the TV's HDR performance.

NOT ALL 4K HDR TVs ARE ANYWHERE CLOSE TO BEING EQUAL. A cheap 4k HDR TV would get demolished by a proper 4K HDR TV

PLEASE READ THIS and do not buy any 4K TV for next gen just because its 4K and has HDR and is cheap. The performance gap between cheap TVs and quality TVs is HUGE.

The main difference is HDR performance. A good HDR TV will have 5-10 times higher peak brightness then a cheap HDR TV. This means all that fancy next-gen ray-tracing lighting will look absolutely superb.

I'll be getting XSX, but whether it's at launch or not will depend on whether Nintendo releases a Switch "Pro" this year (because I'd probably get that first). If not, I'll preorder XSX for day 1.

XSX i will get years later when it gets slim only to replace an aging XO. PS5 it depends, if there is a good first party online i get day 1, if not i will get years later same at the XSX to replace my PS4 and hopefully PS3-2.. if it had full BC.
