Came across this funny video and it got me thinking......

So now that Microsoft has started achievements, and has been thinking about awarding gamers "achievement points" for completing certain tasks outside of games, and other companies like Sony and Valve's Steam have jumped on the bandwagon with "trophies" and such, what's everyone's opinion on achievements or trophies in games? Do they make them better or add replay value to it? Do they irritate you when you work so hard to get them and the reward is so little??

they're alright to get, depending on if the condition on getting thhem is cool or not.I'm not one of those tools that will play crap games like avatar,or disney games just for the easy achievement/trophy.

A good game shouldnt need either achievements or trophies in order to have replay value.

It's just like getting a gold star on your school work when you were a kid. It also encourages cheating, glitching, and finding ways around the rules. Make it go away.

They are cool. It is funny to do certain things "just to get the achivement". It makes yu feel you get an additional reward besides the feeling of success. And it is cool you can prove when you beated the game on the mega hard dificulty instead of just telling your friend who never believes you >_>

They're fun little extras, but not necessary when a game can stand on its own without them. And I have a small rant about the RE5 trophies. I think it's bull **** that you have to buy the DLC costumes or whatever to get 100%.

They're okay. I wish they were harder to get so that, y'know, when you get an achievement you actually feel like you've achieved something.

You dont need the dlc ones to get a plat. They are just there if you buy the dlc you have some trophies to try for thats all. I should know I got a plat in RE5. ON topic I say they are fun to get. Also they add replay vaule to a game espcially if the game is good.

I like them. Getting a token reward for a meta-game task somehow makes it more satisfying, despite how insignificant the reward is.

I would like it if more games had achievements that are actually meta-games, instead of giving you 20 points when you beat a level.

Too late lol. Multiplat games really don't have a choice, they're basically the same (save for the Platinum trophy). Some hidden achievements/trophies are funny. Like: "Die a certain amount of times".

You don't have to buy anything to get the 100%.

Go and compare the trophies to someone else on your friends list. Even if you have the platinum it will say 85% complete.

I just play the game. And if I like it enough, I'll replay it. If trophies/achievements come, then all the better.

There is none. Only if you wear fanboy glasses theres a big difference, but if you look at it with actual clear logic eyes then you can see theres no real dif at all. Execpt one is points and one is trophies.

It's an abomination.

Unlockables haven't gone away. They're still there as much as they ever were.

Trophies, achievements, unlockables, loot, high scores.... they all the serve the same purpose. They're small rewards for things you've done in a game. Trophies and achievements have the benefit (and high scores to a less extent) of being tied to a universal ID, being saved in a database and viewable to the rest of the world if you want it to be.

I don't think they're either good or bad. They are what they are... just another addition to the evolving landscape of gaming.

They add replay value. I just don't like hidden achievements/trophies. I'm not going to wander around the game doing vague objectives just to see if I'd get a trophy. Tell me what I have to do, and I'll get it, jeez.

finalfantasy94

Why? I mean you own a 360.. what the heck is the difference between trophies and achievements?

There is none. Only if you wear fanboy glasses theres a big difference, but if you look at it with actual clear logic eyes then you can see theres no real dif at all. Execpt one is points and one is trophies.

naw man im just wishing that if i got a ps3 it would be like my ps2

i mean i dont really care that much i guess its just how they are represented i cant explain i look at someones trophy card and its like

theres 9 different pieces of information to take in and after 10 seconds of looking at it i still cant tell if its good or not lol

im going to do extra stuff in games in an effort to make my white bar move 1/190th of an inch

Achievements/trophies are both good and bad in my opinion. On the one hand, they can add replay value to games that otherwise have next to none; but on the other hand they seem to be giving the wrong focus to a lot of gamers these days. Games are about it's experiences (story, gameplay, atmosphere, etc) and it's overall entertainment value, and it seems many gamers these days tend to be purely focused on their trophies/achievements. I know plenty of people who simply play games to get the achievements/trophies regardless of whether or not they are having fun.

I always thought of it like this: we watch movies or read books for their entertainment value, just like video games. Just imagine if we added achievements/trophies to movies or books; now the focus and emphasis is taken away from their entertainment value. Isnt the real achievement the entertainment and fun we get from playing games, watching movies or reading books?

[QUOTE="Swift_Boss_A"]the video was full of win, achievements are lame if you get carried away and act like its a big accomplishment. Trophies on the other hand :D Check out my trophy number and percentage 8) Oh yeah.Episode_Eve

Come on, be fair now, some trophies are lame too, like this one i got for killzone 2 - Popcorn Ribbon (Bronze): Watch all Killzone 2 cut scenes.

I don't think there's a popcorn ribbon trophy for KZ2.

it was a joke... It would have been funnier if he said that about MGS4 and IF MGS4 had trophies :\ because the cutscenes in KZ2 are at max 2 minutes or so :\

They're awesome and addicting, perhaps too much so. Just recently I was in a trophy battle with one of my PSN friends. It got to the point where I was just playing for the sole purpose of getting trophies. Hell I had Metal Gear Solid IV sitting on the shelf unplayed while I was playing lesser games just because MGS IV didn't have trophies. My wii was also being ignored and unlike many posters here, I love the Wii especially because of Wii-ware and Virtual Console (I have over 50 downloadable games for the Wii!). Eventually, I had to just stop. I didn't touch my PS3 for almost 2 weeks while I enjoyed my Wii. Now my friend has like a 60 trophy advantage on me and I can just relax and play and now worry about it.
