Now, I want serious answers here. Do YOU think, and I mean REALLY think, while looking at other games on the syste, heck not just on that system, do you REALLY THINK SMG2 deserves all of the critical praise it got> Think about this now. Because when I saw the game get high scores of 10/10 and all this praise about being one of the best ever made I seriously had my Wii out the window about to throw it as I thought the world had freaking gone crazy. I personally do not believe how this game got this much praise when it came out. Eventually becoming more popular and getting these hard to believe reviews. To me, the game was a step back and I cannot find one reason, not even an explanation from somebody that likes the game, that is enough of a reason to prove to me why this game got all it's godly reputation from. I think it has to do with the fact that most Wii games are indeed lacking. They are poor, and every game no matter who releases it, that is better than the large pile of lacking games, will instantly be overrated. I am even talking about the first SMG, which I still think is better than the 2 even though I also think that was overrated. But that's just an opinion. What's yours?Captainqwark10
Literally everything about the game was amazing. The graphics and art style were incredible, the gameplay was creative and fun in literally all the main 122 starmissions(even though the green stars were the weakest part of the game),the final mission was a brutal test in SMG2 gameplay, thesoundtrackis incredible and can't be matchedby any Wii game
Awesome game, and undeniably a 9.0 or higher, but giving it a 10 is quite a stretch (I try and reserve 10 for special occasions). I go back and forth between 9 and 9.5 for the game. My issues are the lack of a good hub world, lack of difficulty in most areas (some are brutal), and a couple other things. SM64 is still my favorite by far.
SMG2 was one of those most brilliant platformers I've ever played. The level design, sound, and attention to detail was incredible. This game was the real deal. A 10? I don't know, but I would say it is worth at least a 9.5
Yes I think it deserved the praise. The whole game was designed very well and is a blast to play. It's even a lot of fun to play after you beat the game. The graphics are great and look better technically and artistically than alot of ps3 games. The platforming is well designed and is never repetitive. The orchestra music sounds great and matches the game well.
The game is just pure fun.
I thought the level of creativity and variety was astounding. It was really really really fun all throughout. Unlike most games, I cannot think of one part that annoyed me, or seemed imperfect in any way. It wasn't that innovative, but the sheer lack of platformers, or just any games as polished or imaginative as SMG2, makes that no big deal in the slightest.
this, one of the best games this gen period.Wasn't perfect, but pretty damn close to it.
Terrific game.

Probably one of the best games I've played in a long time...though I would agree that a 10 would be somewhat of a stretch. My biggest issue was that even though it had more power ups, more stars...just more of everything except for the surprisingly touching story...the thing that annoyed me was that even though it is clearly a better game, the first Mario Galaxy already took my breath away so Galaxy 2 didn't give me as big a punch as it should have.
I love the game, but does noone else find that it is way too easy in parts, especially the cloud suit? I think the cloud suit was an awesome idea, but it was never used to its potential and instead made things very easy. I also just dont like the Galaxy theme as much as 64's theme.
With every previous generation I have never been able to decide what my favorite game of the gen was. I could usually narrow it down to about 5 games at best.
This gen SMG2 is far and away the best game I have played. I don't even have to think twice, the game has no peers. If I worked as a gameplay, or level designer I would have probably quit my job and pursued a new career due to feeling insufficient after playing SMG2. Its that damn untouchable. And this is coming from a guy that never really liked 3d platformers to begin with.
Best game of the gen and easily one of the best games I've ever played. If any game has ever been deserving of a 10, this is the one.

Ok, While we are shouting opinions i will attack them anyway just so I am clearer. The Graphics were not amazing. It looked good but not to the point were I would even give them an 8. The game looks honestly like something that can be done/or close to being done by the GC. Also, a bit blocky at times. Art Style? Art Styles doesn't make the game, espeically when it looks simillar to other games in the SAME series. The gameplay was creative? Other than adding a Yoshi it is the same game I have played since SM64 with minimal upgrades. Fun is an opinion, but I think that's what's blocking people from seeing the flaw of the game that I will not be listing as it is long. The soundtrack? God I hope that's not why you buy games.Adding: Very Linear, Some objects look like they were ripped from earlier games. Fuzzy, We have been collecting stars for how long now? Actually, what has this game done to improve the first game in ANYWAY is really my question.Awesome game, and undeniably a 9.0 or higher, but giving it a 10 is quite a stretch (I try and reserve 10 for special occasions). -getting rid of the worthless HUB world (or shrinking it down anyway), to save time getting from level to level
-more difficult.
These two come to mind.

It seems you are trying very hard to not like the game. If Yoshi is the only thing that comes to mind when you think about how this game is creative then I dont know what to tell you. I want to say it sounds as if you havent played the game, but I'd hate to be one of those guys.
Maybe the game just wasnt for you.

I´m kind of on the same boat as he is,only I stopped caring about them after the 16 bit gen. The only platformers that get me mildly excited are the sonic ones, and even then...most of the recent stuff has been rubbish,so...Platforming is kind of a dead genre for me these days to be honest.

It's impossible to create something as good lookingas SMG2 on the GC.Anyway I meant it looked good for a Wii game. Literally no third partyWii game comes close to it in graphics or artstyle. The only one I think that comes close is Sonic Colours. The gamedidn't look fuzzy for me at all and soundtracks can help to make a game feel more fun or have a better atmosphere.

I am not sure what you are responding to, but the HUB worlds were awesome in 64 and Sunshine. If they are going to cut it out, they should have done so COMPLETELY, as there was NO point in the one in Galaxy. It was not fun to wander around, there was nothing to collect, and really nothing to do. It was just the annoying purple fat star that said the same crap over and over again. I hate that guy lol. This was a complaint for me, but other than that the game just needed a bit more difficulty in areas then it would have been a 10 to me.
My opinion is that I didnt enjoy it as much as I would have if I played it when I was younger. Im used to open world gameplay like 64, Sunshine, Kazooie, and Tooie and the Zelda games, Metroid.
Ive gotten accustomed to exploration and playing around in game worlds. Galaxy 2 gives too many rules, it forces you to play the way it wants you too. That makes the game better paced and gives more platforming, but I didnt care for any of the worlds. When I finished a galaxy I never wanted to go back because once you finish the levels theres literally nothing else to do there and each galaxy had few stars so you dont even get used to the world before you're off to another one. I'd rather play with big open play grounds that let you fully flesh out and discover rather than plow through and be done with.

Sort of how I feel...nicely put. Amazing game, but that is something that bothered me no doubt.
The problem is that when a game that looks and plays and adds more than but still pretty much does the same thing it gets bashed, but when Mario does it everyone is freaking blind (Or follows professional "reviews" like GS) and it is suddenly this great piece of work even though it is the exact same with little improvements. How can it possibly gain all this raise for stuff it really does not do that much better than other games even on its own SYSTEM? My only conclusions point to fanboys, following fools like GS reviewers, the Wii library is THAT bad, or the fact that 2 3D Mario (MARIO) Platforming games appeared on one system at the same time, or Nintendo is paying for this crude, or the fans don't want Mario to die and end up like Sonic or whatever mascot so badly that they will do all in their power to prevent the game from failing and will blindly play the game even though they know the game is not really that good, or the world is insane.Captainqwark10
And you are closed minded for thinking it all boils down to fanboys, suckers for reviews, or Wii only owners. One look at my sig could tell you I fall into neither of those categories.
The game simply outdoes its predecessor in every conceivable way. Sorry that not every little difference can be put into a list for you. It simply took an amazing formula (SMG) and evolved it into something much better (SMG2). The level design was much more risky for lack of a better word. They took the mechanics and used them in extremely creative ways. The game was packed with tons of original content, and I hardly ever felt like I was doing the same thing twice. The way they handled green star missions in this game was much better and in a lot of instances pushed the mechanics in ways that I couldn't imagine.
To put it simply it was just extremely well designed. Sorry if you can not see that, but you are in the minority here. It was the most fun gaming experience I've had this gen and apparently many others felt the same way. Honestly, I havent had a game entertain me so much since I was a kid.
I felt the same way as you did with the first Super Mario Galaxy. The second Super Mario Galaxy, however, hit the biggest home run any platformer ever could deem possible.
I cannot emphasise just how much better Super Mario Galaxy 2 is than the first Mario galaxy!
-It has unmatched variety (every single level was completely different than the last. You never expected anything that was coming next)
-The level of creativity is completely untouched (I have NEVER seen a game have this many brilliant ideas crammed into one package. This game is a testement to the capabilities of the human imagination)
-One of the most visually appealing games this gen
-Much better difficulty than the last game
-twice as many stars as any 3D Mario game
-Far better reward for getting all the stars
-The level designers completely outdid themselves this time!
-As always, the controls in thisMario game are piych perfect!
Mario Galaxy 1 had no impact on me. It was just another Mario game
Mario Galaxy 2 blew me awayon 49 seperate occations
Yay, someone outside of the Sheep persuasion who's able to admit that it's great but not their thing. You sir are something of a saint. I personally believe it deserves every last bit of praise it's received since I love platformers and it's pretty much the best I've ever played. The "lower standards" argument that seems to come up again here ticks me off, SMG1 won GOTY in 2007 over insanely rough competition, best of the gen. They didn't judge each nominee by the standards of its platform, they compared them all and it was in their opinion the best.I actually bought the game really cheap a couple of months but barely played it,it looks ok (great if you´re into platformers) but not really my thing.

I don't get what is good about it. Not bad, but doesn't stick out. It's too linear and easy for it be fun, and I don't know why the level design wowed people, it was pretty basic to be honest; not in a bad way but at the same time it isn't something worth bragging about.

I'm not sure what to comment on with this post. Either:
a) Level 2 with 35 posts
b) most likely has never played either SMG 1 or 2 to correctly form an opinion of such
c) his PSN account is down and can't get into his hacked Black Ops game, thus feeling extremely bitter about games and/or life in general
d) all of the above
Difficulty and linearity = fun for you?! If that's the way it works, i guess Portal 2 was absolute trash, as that was easy as hell, even though I had a blast playing it.I don't get what is good about it. Not bad, but doesn't stick out. I agree I loved it also I loved that they went back to a Map system from the 2D Mario platformers I love that I wasn't a big fan of the HUB world in most of the 3D Mario Platformers.I felt the same way as you did with the first Super Mario Galaxy. I haven't played it, but I have played super mario galaxy and got all 121 stars, and that game was absolutely incredible. so, I have to assume it's the same for the sequal.
Well it was way better than SMG which got 9.5ish scores from most places. So a ten is very deserving. Ot was my favorite game last year and my third favorite of the gen
