I honestly think that it's one of the best video game areas ever.

Great atmosphere. Both depressing and beautiful at the same time.

Your thoughts?

They did a good job on Rapture, but they could have done better. The level design was too linear to constitute feeling like a "city." And that detracted from the gameplay. They did a better job with the enviornment in SS2 (and everything else for that matter).

Moral of the story, if you think Bioshock is great, play SS2. Then you'll think Bioshock is just good.

It's okay but as far as being a city where people actually live....it fails. Imagine if it actually looked lived-in... that would be awesome, and make so much more sense.

No wonder why everyone went crazy, you have to go through bathrooms just to get to the theater! How annoying!

Good yes. But one of the best? No way.

To be honest the city reeked of generic, lost underwater city.

The atmosphere was one of the only good things in the game. SS2 had a better atmosphere.

Unique atmosphere, great design. It was one of the more memorable fps experiences I've had. I wish we had more fps's with unique environments instead of the same old steely corridors, industrial warehouses and post apocalyptic settings.

rapture has to be one of the most brilliantly-done settings ever. the diarys are so amazing to listen to... like as you go through the medical pavillion you hear the gradual maddening of dr steinmann through his diaries... and the most epic twist ever when you meet ryan. and also the immense FEELING it gives to you in the first 15 minutes of playing.

EDIT: errr i just read your message mingo123. funny we both said the exact opposite about the first 15 minutes...

2 hours? You'd probably get into it if you played it for 2 hours. Or maybe you don't have the patience to play it for 2 hours.

While I did hate BioShock *raises flame shield*, I'll admit Rapture was a pretty cool place. Just one thing bugged me about Rapture's design: With the bathyspheres being the only mode of transportation throughout Rapture, you'd swear they'd have more bathysphere stations all over the place. Of course, it makes total sense from a game design perspective to reduce the number of bathysphere stations, you could still include them but block them off with a nice excuse like "You remember that plane you took to get here? Yeah, it exploded and caused a chain reaction inconveniently blocking off most of the bathysphere stations."

i loved exploring Rapture .. the design and atmosphere were top notch

with these rumours of Bioshock 2 being a prequel, it'll be interesting to see Rapture in its glory

i get the feeling that there's loads more to the city we've yet to see .. otherwise it's not much of a city really

Rapture is easily one of the most atmospheric places ever captured in a video game. It's a shame some people (you know who are, elitists?) downplay it.

Rapture could have been something great, but it disappointed in the long run. The whole place felt like a labyrinth, with small claustrophobic corridors connecting everything. It DID NOT feel like a city what-so-ever.

Even though System Shock 2 is better in gameplay depth and more challenging.

OVerall Bioshock was a fantastic game, if anything the game is System Shock 2 with a new coat of paint. Take out some of the depth in combat, take away the challange.

Overall you have a similar game, story arch, atmosphere, plot twist, etc

Bioshock was fantastic.

But my favorite game environment. ACT 4 MEtal Gear Solid 4.

I think the story transcends the medium. It, along with the gameplay, can be discussed on a literary level.

The story was System Shock 2 wrapped in Steampunk, ditto gameplay but wrapped in diapers.

The gameplay was great and the majority backs up that claim. Sorry, you didn't enjoy it. Maybe you should've looked at it as a spiritual successor, which it was, and not as a sequel, which it wasn't.

Where did I say it was bad? I said it was simplified.

I would use consolised. But I won...

It was consolised.

So wait, because the gameplay wasn't what you assumed it would be (despite Levine and co. saying "This game is an FPS" 1000 times pre-release), it was wrapped in diapers?

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me...

He said it was "consolised", yet it was never supposed to be based off of something before it. It wasn't the sequel to anything, it was a new IP, so I don't get how it could've been "consolised" from nothing. It's not a System Shock 2 sequel and never was supposed to be. I wish the complainers would've read about it before buying it, because they obviously expected it to be something it wasn't. It's a great experience on its own, and it needs to stop being compared to something it was never trying to be, period.

It was one of the few things that I liked in BioShock but I couldn't get immersed in it cause I thought the gameplay was weak.

Van Braun is a better place though. Much more frightening too.

I understand anyone who says they started Bioshock and found it boring. It was the same for me, the intro was amazing but the first past of Med. Pavilion is really boring. Good thing I got the hang of it, Rapture has a great atmosphere and it's really fun to explore.
