4 was my favorite yakuza game, and I actually enjoyed all the characters but the story wasn't as strong as previous installments. In terms of gameplay I'd go 4 > 3 > 2 > 1 and just the opposite for story. I didn't like the whole orphanage plot/setting for the 3rd game :/
