Cant belive i forgot Doom 2, that was my first online fps lol. I remember getting pissed off when someone would call or pick up the phone while i was in teh middle of an epic game of doom2! Damn 14k modems! :P

Sweet man, i didnt like gears of war 1 online at all, but Gears Of War 2 has that new HORDE mode that is GREAT coop with friends. Enjoy your new xbox and onlien gaming man!

Great list... Tribes being on top is pretty much a given for me. I think half the people who played it and don't like it were expecting another Quake clone - and they threw a hissy fit when they ran around on the ground with the chaingun and couldn`t kill anyone.

I'd add in Duke 3D and the first AvP as well... Take out Operation Flashpoint and the Call of Duty games.Shafftehr

That and nothing is as satisfying as a mid air spinfusor kill, or when you begin to master the level geometry and skii properly.

AvP multiplayer was awesome though; though the marine movement in the first was a bit too fast, almost Doom sty-le speed, and AvP was fantastic, though I never got around to playing Duke 3D online.

I only played a little bit of TF2(about 10 hrs worth) it was fun but then I started playing BF2142 again and didn't go back.

I've played quite some online fps, but there's only one that stands out above the rest, which is halo 2. That's not really because the gameplay was so amazing, but because bungie did the online matchmaking so great. Where in other console fps or pc fps I was always just joining servers and playing on my own, I was always playing with a team in halo 2, and I always played people who were pretty much exactly as good as me. In games like COD4 online, you've got some good players who go 30 kills, 6 deaths, and some really bad ones who die 20 times pretty much without killing. In halo 2, 90% of the games, the best score was 14 on 9, the worst 8 on 15 or something. It had nothing to do with the gameplay itself, but rather with getting the right people together.

1. Team Fortress Classic - I enjoyed this game much more than the sequel. This was the first online FPS I have ever played and easily the best. It nailed the class based system and the graphics at the time were so realistic. 2 Fort was also one of the best maps ever.

2. Counter-Strike - I'm not trying to follow a trend here, but it was my second online game and also probably my second favourite.

3. Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory - easily the best class based FPS I've ever played and the maps were also amazing. I had some damn good times playing the Temple map, it was immense.

4. Halo 2 - the first online console FPS that really blew me away. I've never played a console game as much as I had played Halo 2. For some reason Halo 3 was a bit of a disappointment for me in terms of replay value online, so I believe Halo 2 deserves this spot.

5. Unreal Tournament 2004 - I've been a huge Unreal fan for quite a while now and any Unreal fan can tell you 2k4 was easily the best iteration of the series. The implementation of vehicles was done so well to match the pace of the gameplay.

6. Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix - A great modern warfare FPS, it actually managed to pull me away from Counter Strike and became my main gaming obsession for a few years. I really wish Raven Soft would work on a true sequel instead of Marvel/X-Men games.

7. Battlefield 1942 - one of the most innovative online FPS's ever. It blended class based gameplay into huge war scenarios with plenty of vehicles and huge maps and did it so well. Almost every FPS today has taken something from Battlefield's formula, its just that damn good.

8. Team Fortess 2 - It took forever to be released but it was well worth the wait. It brought great balance to the class based system, a great sense of humor and style to their characters, and has a very charming visual design.

9. Quake 3 - One of the best, if not the best, arena style FPS gameplay. Fast paced and relies heavily on quick reaction speeds, a great competative FPS.

10. Call of Duty 4 - included balanced gameplay, a nice ranking system, and the creative perk features.
