I dont like free roaming games very much, but I can put together 5 good ones:

1)TES: Daggerfall

2)Grand Theft Auto (aka GTA 1)

3) inFamous

4) Quarantinehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4rK5iqJke8

5) Body Harvest

but as I said, I dont play much free roaming games and I generally dont enjoy them, so games like Oblivion etc. were plain boring for me. Those 5 were excellent though.

In no particular Order

  1. Freelancer: Space sim, complete freedom. I was a space pirate, yar har. Highly enjoyable game, wish a sequel came out.
  2. Mount and Blade: Warband: This is what Oblivion should have been like with its large battles, combat system and the fact that you actually influense the world.
  3. EvE Online: What can I say, I am a sucker for space sims. I have resubbed recently, I dont regret it one bit. Too bad I deleted all my old characters.
  4. Zelda: Majora's Mask: I loved the world, the sense of doom. I also liked the plot and characters, this game really fleshed out the hero of time.
  5. Ultima 7: Released in 1992 it still does everything outside of graphics better than Oblivion, it is leagues better, AI and world interaction are still above most modern games sadly enough.

1. San Andreas 2. Vice City 3. Crackdown 4. RDR 5. Assassin's Creed II Based my choices best not off of favorite game altogether, but how fun I found the freeroam to be. In this regard, Crackdown actually beats RDR due to the insanely fun co-op. RDR only had multiplayer freeroam which got rid of most of the fun the game had.

  1. Fallout 3: Spent way too much time playing this game. I don't regret any of it.
  2. Saints Row 2: You can streak and flash people, 'nuff said.
  3. Mercenaries: Despite it having a crappy health system, this game is miles ahead of Mercenaries 2
  4. [Prototype]: Crappy story but more than made up for it in gameplay.
  5. inFamous: Better story than [Prototype], but I found the combat lacking,

I'm not sure how to really define free-roam, but here it goes in no particular order:

  • World of Warcraft
  • NIER
  • Monster Hunter Tri
  • Grand Theft Auto San Andreas
  • Fable or Assassins Creed 2

That's if Zelda games aren't counted as free-roam.

What's the difference between Free Roam, Open World, and Sandbox?

AmayaPapaya

Theoretically: free roam means you can freely move about the game world regardless of your current objective, so games like Zelda count. Open world means the majority of the game world is seamless with no transitions, like in GTA or Infamous. A sandbox game has no explicit objectives and you're just encouraged to play around with the tools you're given, like Garry's Mod.

But people are usually talking about open world games when they use any of them.

Anyway, mine are Morrowind, Oblivion, Infamous, GTA San Andreas, and...Assassin's Creed? I would say Borderlands, but that has separate areas.
