What are your favorite shootemups!!!!!! I always loved this genre and it is very far reaching.

I'm an old man and can't remember if Contra counts as a shmup since your not in a ship, but for the purpose of this list im thinking of any game with unlimited primary ammo and bombs (or not)

Man, the Genesis pretty much KILLED this genre in the 90's and will probably never be topped (if only since shmups are much less popular and thus less-produced)

I never actually got into this genre. Not sure why.

Haven't played many, but from what I have played, Radiant Silvergun, R Type and Axelay are my fav.

Mine is old stuff, fell out with the genre during PS3 era.

Btw got a question, is Alienation and Helldivers on PS4 considered shmups? They are twin stick shooter sure but seems like the genre can be considered in the same genre as shmups. Very enjoyed these games especially Helldivers random generated maps and drop in/out coop.

came out on PC back in 1992-93. has a weird design and ost. you can run it on dosbox

I haven't played a lot of them outside of arcades or ports of arcade games a a kid.

Should, great game. I think most don't care for it as it's not a twin stick shooter but it doesn't need to be. Wish there was a sequel planned but it sold like shit.

Donno what it is, just looks and feels best on that system even though it starts to chug at times.

kind of the nature of the genre, super niche. Housemarque the devs that made resogun and Nex Machina (dope game btw) and alienation have basically used the genre as their bread n butter, but even they had to accept the genre isn't sustainable for them.

Galak Z also came out the same week as Goat simulator came out on PS4, would imagine that didn't help because that game did some stupid sales number. But yeah it's got a neat vibe.

@uninspiredcup: Its one of the most impressive 8 bit games I ever played. Did you ever find the secret stage back then? I did by accident, tried finding it again a few years ago but couldn't. :(
