I'm still slightly shocked that people continue to support publishers and their attempts to make your purchase eventually obsolete.

My main point here is that they are starting to lock out single player content in games.

http://www.giantbomb.com/news/rage-has-its-own-version-of-the-online-pass-sewers/3581/

http://www.giantbomb.com/news/warner-bros-insists-that-all-catwomen-be-paid-for-new-and-be-connected-to-the-internet/3742/

Eventually, I see all games will be fully locked to one account making the disc useless.

No more buying used games, no more selling used games, no more letting your friend borrow your games, no more renting, and no more returns (once the code is used, the game will have no value). I could see it becoming an even bigger problem when this current generation becomes a 'retro' generation. Relying on the publisher to have some kind of server up forever? Not likely.

What say you system wars, do you still like this pass system?

Hell no! Especially if you're a fan of old games. If anything, this was caused by publishers greed and are taking rights away from gamers.

I say that I dont like this, but I would like to say the majority of people probably dont know a lot of these online passes. If I didnt check gaming news on a regular basis I wouldnt know about it. This is just an assumption but thats my take on it.

Oh for sure, I love the excuse people give: bu bu but the devs need mah money. In reality, you'd be better off buying the game used and sending the difference you saved directly to the developer.

I don't think I've bought any games used this gen, unless it was something I just couldn't find new anywhere. It doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I'm not a big fan of this pass system, but you either have to learn to live with it or stop gaming. I don't plan to stop gaming.

Any time you buy a game new instead of used specifically because you want to get the bundled pass or DLC you're telling the publisher "thanks for ripping me off, please rip me off more often and more severely in the future".

On the PC many games are irrevocably tied to an online account, making the disc itself worthless without the associated login. This is the future for consoles if bundled passes and DLC continue to be successful. Yes, you brought this on yourself.

Dosent bother me, i dont buy usedfinalstar2007

This isn't just about actually exchanging money for a used copy but any and all uses of a game with bundling. Borrowing from a friend, having multiple consoles in the same house... these situations and more are made much more difficult by the publisher's greed.

In some cases players have bought new copies of a game only to find the pass is refused due to a technical issue or whatever. Have fun convincing tech support that you aren't trying to cheat them.

We can all thank companies for not having any sort of percentage kick-back to developers when they sell a used game. Companies like Gamestop rob developers and publishers of profit, and they're trying to combat that. Can't blame them to be honest.

I never thought of that tbh, your truly right i know for sure my brother is going to pick up BF3 so if i want to play his copy i guess i'll be forced to pay $10 to play it online instead of saving and taking his copy lol. this honestly never came to my mind, they should allow for max 3 activations maybe that would help or heck how about 2 activations only at least by that two system get to be able to get in without that $10. truly something to think about.

Similarly, any time you buy a game used for $5 less than new around launch time, you told publishers, thanks for making the game, but I'm more interested in buying a McCombo than you seeing any return over GameStop, please implement things to give new games a competitive advantage.

Why, yes, you brought this on yourself too.

I believe the EA passes simply need to be tied to one account on a particular console - at least that's what they write on their page about Online passes.

You mean when I take advantage of their buy-2-used-games-get-1-free deal, then use my Edge card to get an additional 10% off of my purchase? Only taking the two games I actually paid for into account, I've saved myself $20 over buying them both new.

Yeah, I only care about saving five dollars, that's totally me.

That's a very short sighted way of looking at things. This is the start of content being left out of SP games. By the time next generation hits I'm sure many publishers will be all for having full locks on games.

PC, I can't buy used anyway, I mean.. there really isn't much of a used PC game market, is there? We've had CD keys for ages, thank god they got rid of our need to have the disc in drive! I think, to compensate, games should just be cheaper, so people are more willing to take a risk on a game! Also, a Used sale is ~a lost sale, it only benefits the filthy store like Gamestop.

No, I don't really like them at all.

Because of Online Passes I can't just play Mortal Kombat on my PS3, I have to play it on my Brother's because that's where the online pass was downloaded.

We bought the Game New, There's no need for ME to pay for the multiplayer again.

I don't buy used games or sell any so they don't effect me at all. The worst case scenario is they fully lock it and I still wouldn't care because I already put up with it on PC.

I don't care about locking out mp but taking out sp is just complete bulls***. I know I'm not the only one that likes to go back to a previous generation and buy old games that aren't even in print, which may be a big possiblity for Batman for me. So in the future when I want to play old games not being able to play the full game is crap.

You would really have to be under the corporate's spell to say yes to that poll. But oh wait, most of those that are defending practices of theirs like this are under their spell & can't learn to break out from it to understand that they don't care about them.

They can do whatever the hell they want. In the end, piracy still wins. Everyone who buys their game honestly has to deal with all these activations and such while piraters basically get a free pass to play the game with no activation and worries, but its okay because pirated games are "lost" sales. If you don't want to deal with the headaches of all these little "nickel and diming" process just xxxxxx the g...--its lost sales anyways and you dont damage the devolper as much as those leechers/*******/(insert cuss word here) who buy it used. That is some severe backward thinking, and it goes beyond something so trivial as video games. It is the equivalent of your doctor telling you that you have heart disease, yet you don't want anything done until you have a stroke or a heart attack. Congrats Baker, you never cease to amaze.

I've been in a 4 week battle with Sony over an invalid online pass right out of the box. I bought Resistance 3 brand new so I could co-op with a buddy of mine, and Sony just keeps dragging their ass through the mud, all they have to do is generate a12 digit code and I'll be satisfied. This whole experience over one lousy code has soiled 25 years of gaming for me, and I wish this POS3 was more easily hacked, much like the chipped PS1 I have sitting in a box right in front of me. F Sony, F the online pass, and the biggest F goes to the greedy developers/publishers who seem to believe they have some kind of right to impose on the free market (used market in this case).

Cool story bro. Yes, you brought this on console gaming too. Now you can save all that money and not play multiplayer or locked-out single-player content.

Congratulations. A winner is you. :)

There's a section where you play as catwomen in the main story that ties in with batman's, you don't get to play this if you don't have the pass.

Never thought I'd agree with something like this as I'm hugely against piracy, but some of your points are valid. All these measures are making it incredibly easy to justify less than legal means of obtaining and playing games.

They lost the sale because they already HAD the sale? I haven't seen the film industry care about second hand DVD/Blu-Ray sales.

And why is that?

Somebody is getting to play their game without them seeing any kind of retribution from it despite the customer showing he is ready and willing to pay for their product through a third mean.

Plenty of reasons to complain about it.

They lost the sale because they already HAD the sale? I haven't seen the film industry care about second hand DVD/Blu-Ray sales.

Can you play games in cinemas or cinema-like places?

Thought so.

Yep, the comparison is flawed.

They didn't lose a sale though. Who's to say that someone who bought a used copy would have bought a new one if that was their only choice.

Jolt_counter119

This is predicated on the assumption that a $5 difference for the average consumer with the intent to purchase something going into a store, will determine whether he leaves with a game or leaves with nothing.

If one believes that to be true in all cases then they can confidently say that used game sales do not affect new game sales.

[QUOTE="WilliamRLBaker"]If escalation was the norm then we'd all be dead and the universe wouldn't exist. as I said when something meaningful gets taken out get back to me.white_sox
That is some severe backward thinking, and it goes beyond something so trivial as video games. It is the equivalent of your doctor telling you that you have heart disease, yet you don't want anything done until you have a stroke or a heart attack. Congrats Baker, you never cease to amaze.

LOL now your just making up whacked out exadgerations to some how make out your right then you personally attack me twice now because you have nothing to back up your argument. Escalation is not the norm If it was the universe would die. Such simple concepts apply to most every thing, you continue to act like companies are completely stupid and dont know what will kill their buisness and consumer faith. We've had alamists like you making up exadgerated scenarios on a consistant basis since DLC it self was first released6 or soyears ago singleplayer games were supposed to have 50% of their content pulled out for dlc and this has yet to happen...

Yep, the comparison is flawed.

Can you watch movies in arcades or arcade like places?

Asking that didn't make any sense. I was comparing used game sales to used DVD/Blu-Ray movie sales, which involve physical copies being sold.

They lost a potential sale through which they would have taken a slice of the revenue to a sale through which they receive no revenue.

Unsourced wiki - which isn't a particularly good source granted - claims that the film industry prohibits the sale of used DVDs of a film in the same retail space as new DVDs, which would make sense if true.

If new DVDs were traded in on a mass scale, and sold in essentially new quality, alongside brand new DVDs for a fractionally lower price at launch-time, then yes - you better believe the MPAA would do something about it.

[QUOTE="GD1551"]

Well catwoman ties into batman's story, and online passes block MP.

GD1551

so you mean catwomen will not be viewable in single player? you mean the game will just stop where catwomen appears in the single player and a blank screen will show up? or is it challenge maps with catwoman...

There's a section where you play as catwomen in the main story that ties in with batman's, you don't get to play this if you don't have the pass.

so this is a required part? no I guess not...your not giving me any reason as to why this is a required meaningful part of the game.
