Zelda Fans Protest, Smash PS4 Over Very Similar Chinese Game

Open-world game Genshin Impact has been described as an anime Breath of the Wild. Some Zelda fans in China are not happy about it. At all.

The Chinese-developed RPG’s first gameplay footage was shown recently at the China Joy gaming expo.

At China Joy, Zelda fans took photos of themselves holding their Switch consoles running Breath of the Wild flipping off the Genshin Impact display at the Sony booth. They’re upset that Sony would release such a similar-looking game.

“Despite this, we noted it was the most popular game at Sony China Joy booth with very long lines,” ZhugeEX tells Kotaku.

Still, as Hachima reports, one guy even destroyed his PS4 in protest.

I say, good on Sony. Since MS isn't in gaming to compete with games we have Sony and Nintendo to duke it out.

If Nintendo making a great game can inspire similar content on Sony's platform I say that's a win win.

lol at anyone getting mad at a competitor making a similar game to their rivals and acting as if it's a bad thing. Forza, MS's only AAA franchise this gen, wouldn't exist if it wasn't for copying Sonys Gran Turismo.

The game isn't even a straight up rip it's got multiple characters with different abilities

This goes back to the roots of what it means to have a competitor in gaming.

Damn so many games coming 2020, Final Fantasy VII remake also in March also at the beginning of the year. Then TLOU 2 will probably be April or May then Ghosts of Tsushima at the end of the year.

All in all PS4 has truly delivered for anyone who only decided to go with Sony as their sole provider for quality games this gen. PS4 has really proven itself to be the single best game platform out of all other alternatives this gen.

I mean...it looks like BotW as far as graphics go but the combat looks nothing like BotW.

As I have said on the Anime community, only fanboys tend to be all hissy-pissy over this while Nintendo just sits back and enjoys their ride as this is a legit nonissue. It should be note that SIE Shanghai are helping the developer with PS4 version. Nothing more.

Sony fanboys who secretly wanted to play BotW, well you got your wish :)

Edit: Already saw the PC version, so I'm gonna wait on that version for obvious reasons.

TBH i think the combat looks a lot tighter here than in BOTW imo. I want to give it a try.

Honestly, I just wanted Nintendo to lower the price of the Switch to something that's reasonable for the hardware, I may skip it all together now.

I'll see what Nintendo does with Switch Pro.

Well yea since Sony will actually bring the games to the west and have localization done.

If, like most of those Chinese PC games that never see the light of day in the west, Sony doesn't bring this over then it will be just as much as a non factor as those other games.

The fact that the official PS4 trailer already has english sub titles already confirms Sony is doing this.

Spring 2020 according to the PS4 announcement trailer.

At first it looked like I was watching Hyrule Field: Waifu Edition in that trailer, but as the footage went on it looks nothing like Breath of the Wild. Just because there's a similar art style (at least partially so), does not mean it's going to be anything like Zelda. We'll talk about a rip-off when we see waifu's climbing over any mountain in the game and jumping off with a hang glider - which I could not make out at all from the footage.

And yet BOTW took inspiration from other games, shocking. Strange behaviour anyway, how many items does China copy?

It's already coming to the West they confirmed English language support before the Playstation announcement. Their initial reveal trailer also had english subtitles. The devs aren't strangers to the Western market their previous games also are available in the West.

The game is coming to PC alongside PS4 and mobile in 2020 it was the first platform aside from iOS that it was announced for. They had a closed beta back in June for PC and iOS.

Actually looking into it a little more... It's definitely more of a rip-off. Some Twit vids in the IGN article look nigh-on like BoTW with a new skin.

They should be protesting why they are forced to play Zelda at 30fps on Nintendo hardware. Shouldn't need to play a game on PC through an emulator just to play it properly. Ridiculous.

When I stand in line for a booth, I always take my PS4 with me so I can play some video games. Or smash it when it's my turn.

There is climbing in this game and it has a stamina bar just like BOTW and also have very similar enemy camps.

They should blame the people that made the game, not Sony.

I don't get the complaint in the first place, BOTW clearly ripped that from the Arkham games. The gliding in Knight was far more satisfying as well.

Oh, it was 100% ripped prior. Given the other similarities to BoTW, it's clear this was ripped from Zelda. There are far more similarities beyond gliding. This was simply my first skip in the video and it really kinda made the point.

Chinese companies are famous for copying intellectual properties and also for not giving a **** about the repercussions that will bring.

What is the problem? The developers themselves cited BotW as an inspiration. They've never hidden that they're basically copying its formula.

But, this is definitely not Zelda. Check the website, read the manga (yes, the game as an official manga on the website), and look it over. It's quite clear they're trying to remake the Zelda formula into their own thing.

Frankly, I'm looking forward to it.

when the real breath wild 2 comes out people are going to want to play the real thing and this game will actually raise hype and zelda will sell even more.

I doubt Nintendo would do anything about it. It's not like this game has been developed in secret; they've been trying to market it for some time.

Meh. If it’s good I’d play it if not then I won’t. Either way it’s not going to make me love Breath of the Wild any less nor look forward to playing Breath of the Wild 2 any less as well.

Wind Waker did it first than Batman and BOTW.

@p3anut: Gliding existed in other games prior to both of them. Including on-the-fly parachutes to prevent insta-death.

It was Arkham that had the impact and Arkham BOTW is mimicking. not just in the gliding but it's shrines which are for all intents and purposes Riddler Challenges.

Not only sheeps don't buy 3rd party games, they tries to hinder 3rd party from doing their business as well.

btw I do hope there is no Ubisoft tower or at least less than in BOTW. out off all things BOTW copy they copied those damn towers and I hope these dev learns its not fun.

1. Ubisoft tower copied by many games before zelda. its tiring to do the same thing for the idk how many times in those games, its tiring to do in zelda no exception.

2. Personally it felt like padding. Just clear the fog on map when I move into the area, I can search for vantage points myself.

Well to be fair at least there weren't that many so it didn't feel like much of a chore to me, I think there's like 12-14 in BoTW and I just played AC Origins where there was over 70!

I like your 2nd point though, yes it would be cool to discover the map as you explore. At least maybe keep the towers for fast travel.
