Castlevania Legends for Gameboy is a pretty hard game to find. I mean I've only found it once in my life.

These are a few games I know of that I find most people I have talked to have never heard of:
Brigandine Gold Edition
The Granstream Saga
Elemental Gearbolt
Princess Crown
Ninja Kun

There are many more but in general they are Japanese games that weren't released over to North America or other places.  Things seemed to have changed a lot now though in the current era of consoles.  As I remember, many years ago the game market was quite different concerning which Japanese games would come over here.  I am enjoying the amount of Strategy/RPGs for PS2 that have come over the shores, for instance, as a result of the changing times.

WHAT! blarg! Curse you working design! But elemental gear bolt is awesome, and i lucked out when i found a mint copy at EB games in the used bin. Lets see Spriggan (awesome Turbo CD shooter, nothing to do with the movie) Sword of the Berserk: Guts' rage (kick ass hack and slash for DC based on the tv series) Border Down (DC side scrolling shooter game released last year in japan) all the Sengoku ace/blade games (imported SS shooters from Taito way back in the day) All the Parodius games (gradius parodies from konami that have awesome characters) Exile (Working Design action rpg for the turbo duo) Phalanx (SNES ss shooter no one seems to remember) i don't feel like looking for more right now.

Yeah, there were a bunch of Sengoku games. The Parodius games were fun. Seems like there are a bunch of good and rare shooters out there. There were also those Choaniki games, but then again this topic is on "best games" no one has heard of...

(Come to think of it, that Brigandine official strategy guide is probably pretty rare; I also have one of those old NES R.O.B. robots.)

Well i don't know if "big" was a good way of describing parodius. And it's not hard to import parodius games, all you need is a Saturn and a Gameshark and you're all set for importing Saturn games. That system was by far the easiest one to import on followed by Dreamcast. Segaga was also supposed to be an awesome game too. Just not awesome for the same reason most shoot'em ups are awesome.

Elemental Gearbolt...so good! Shoot the bouncing coins (those were my bane). And Jumping Flash was too cool. I remember being 7 or so and popping it into my old style PS1. I was sitting there bugging out because the graphics were so good. AND I could jump hundreds of feet in the air and shoot whales out of the sky.

I can't think of too many but here are a few that I remember people over looked:

Kessen (when this game came out me and my friend reveled in the Japanese history...and the supremely manly voice acting)
Red Faction (destructible environments were what made this game so cool, I loved blowing chunks off of buildings with tanks)
Total Eclipse Turbo (I haven't played this game in about five years, but I remember hating it for its difficulty. Then again I was 10 years old.)
Croc (desperately needs a PSP or DS sequel, easy money I tell you...KIDS LOVE IT!)

No not at all.  They just both have "2000" in their titles.

ClayFighter, I still remember the catchy theme song to that game.  I think I played the Genesis version, but that was a long time ago.

Good, I found a thread I hadn't posted to but had something I could say on. Does anyone remember when Super Popeye was slated for release for the SNES around 1994 or so? Technos was going to release it, but it never was released. A few years ago, though, I found out that there was a Popeye game in Japan for the Super Famicom, but it seems like it has quite a few differences from what Super Popeye was going to be. In the Japanese game, Popeye has an anchor slung over his shoulder, which he swings in addition to jumping on enemies like Mario, whereas in Super Popeye, Popeye would have used his fist, which he could power up before punching, and I saw no screenshots of a board.

See, in the Japanese version, it's like a board game, and it is 2 player, with split screen view for each player, and your goal is to get Popeye around the game board to find hearts around the board. There are minibosses, like General Bunzo, who go around the board and will pick up a heart if they come to it, which means you have to chase that miniboss down and fight them to get that heart. You can go through levels, gamble for coins (and 1ups for every 100 you win, just like in Mario games), shops where you can buy items, etc. In the levels, you just go through, though if it's a level with a heart, you need to try to find that, too, as you go through the level. When you get all the hearts, then you try to make your way to Brutus, and then beat him and go to the next level. Spinach doesn't come into play except in boss fights, after you've hit the boss several times. You get the spinach and then finish the boss off in one of 4 fun ways.

The hearts are there to break the stone spell on 5 or 6 Popeye characters (I think 5), which was cast on Sea Hag, hence the full title Popeye Ijiwaru Majo Sea Hag No Maki (translation: Popeye: Mean Witch's Sea Hag's Scroll). After beating Brutus the 5th time, Popeye has to fight Sea Hag at the end to break the spell on Olive Oyl. (for the record, I never saw what Popeye saw in Olive - I'd let Brutus have her if I was him, and then find some other reason to beat him up :P) I first found out about the game through an emulation disc my best friend had for his Dreamcast, and then found and bought a copy of the Super Famicom game in 2002 through gametz.com I think as early as 1993, Super Popeye was announced for the SNES in EGM, but like I said, I never saw any screenshots of the board, so it may have been a straight forward action game for all I know. The game came out in 1994 in Japan, and then Technos went under the next year, so that's probably why it never came out here. If it hadn't been for that, I'm sure we would have gotten it here, with as much a staple character as Popeye is for us.

There are several Popeye games, the first being the arcade game, which the NES game is a console version of, and which was also released for Atari 2600, Colecovision, etc. There were also 2 on Game Boy that are straight forward action games, a couple of Commodore 64 games, which I know nothing about other than the fact that they went up to Popeye 3, and Hush Rush For The Spinach for PS2 and GBA, which just seems lame to me, as Popeye characters were never born to race on foot. The Super Famicom game, however, is quite different from all the rest of them, and it is really fun - the sort of game that could get you hooked on video board games. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend trying it at least once.

If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend trying it at least once.

you know too much about popeye games...

Well, I don't call myself 80s Gamer for nothing. 8)

[QUOTE="EnergyAbsorber"]Death Duel for Sega Genesis. Any of you that still have Genesis should look into it. Its a very fun and challenging game imo.falconclan
Wow... now theres one i havent heard of... ill check it out ;)

Yeah its easily in my top 5 favorite genesis games list. And I own 53 Genesis games. It's a very challenging game. Each giant robot or giant beast you fight has some kind of weakness you have to figure out before you can kill him. And each opponent is harder than the last. You can upgrade and purchase new weopons after every battle.

True, but prior to 1982, Popeye games weren't in existence.
