okay, so i rushed out three or four days after it came out and bought the game at my leisure. actually, i talked my young wife into running the errand for me. after it sitting on my desk for several days i managed to get around to playing the game this weekend.

first i wanted to try out the new movesets from special.  ma chao has a very cool sword. i'm a fan of the dw4 and 5 spear too, but the sword makes him stand out from the less than stellar dw6 spear he was given initially. the only thing missing is the usual "spear banter" we've all come to love and respect. still the sword kicks arse.

Cao Pi has a respectable weapon as well. i also like Yue Ying's new sword/bow weapon. i haven't gotten to Ling Tong yet or Zhang He or Meng Huo.

the game play is a bit refreshing compared to straight DW6. i started out as a vagrant and tried a few missions. much fun. you can do these very, very quickly, or you can up the challenge and try to complete a bonus side mission along the way. usually this involves bailing out a merchant or another officer that's being attacked by bandits. you can help this person out or just complete the mission. but time is limited as your mission usually involves bailing someone out in the first place or protecting another officer. so this adds some variation to the usual empires gameplay.

weapons are leveled via a forge. horses are bought. skills are upgraded through training. you need money and gems to use the forge, and just money for the rest. not all provinces have all services. there are other ways to level up and get better stats and they come along as you play the game.

in short the weapon, horse, and character leveling system is the broadest and most customizable i've seen with the most depth available for reaching your weapon goals.

i've probably clocked 10 hours and not yet touched the ruler system or really gotten myself too leveled up. i've created about 20 custom characters and named them/designed them after people i know - like Darth Vader. so Darth Vader roams the land. much fun.

next they need to make it so you can customize the goodness and evilness of your custom characters.

so far i've not played the traditional aspect of the game - that being the part where you try to take over other territories with your character as ruler. so in that respect i feel like i'm playing ROTK 9 with the strong role playing element but with the mosou battle interface. it's still not quite ROTK yet, but i think this part alone makes it much better than earlier empires games i've played.

still i've sort of grown out of the fantasy aspect of the game since i spent months making an ROTK game, and i've read most of the ROTK novel. it sort of ruined part of the illusion and mystery for me.  i don't really feel like pulling for a certain character. they're all flawed. in that aspect DW is ruined for me. so comparing the games on that level is not really fair. but i'd say if i was still where i once was i'd find this game far superior. plaus it's a PS3 game that costs $40 and has lots of play value. forget 4, 5, or 6 mousou levels per character. you could probably play with a character for weeks and not finish the game if you wanted. you could be a Zuo Ci type and go from faction to faction and mess with each ruler. or you could just go balistic and win the game. i really just enjoy fighting with incredible odds so i'm not interested so much in clearing a level.

i beat the yellow turban rebellion. i defected from He Jin and joined up with Sun Jian.

one frustrationg thing is that executions have been eliminated. so there's no real threat to your life. in other words if you can't beat the game in 120 years you lose. otherwise you could play for months and months on end. kinda ridiculous.

also you can't create a custom map like you could in DW5:E. that was one of my favorite features because i could put characters together that normally wouldn't be together to see how well they did as a team. oh well.

executions would require a patch. DLC like music and accessories is easy enough. working in executions - if they did that - would set a pretty major prescedent for Koei as a game maker. people will start asking for things like better move sets for characters and the return of old weapons. i know they can patch these things online now with consoles, but it starts putting consoles into the murky waters of Personal Computers.

i'd hate to get a game for my PS3 that needed a major patch to work right. that would suck since that's what consoles are supposed to have over PC versions of games.

I think I'm going to give this game a pass. The main reason being I would rather do other things. I think I will play Okami, FFXII and other PS2 gems I never qutie finished instead. Oh and KZ2 which hasn't got much play at all from me. Mostly I'm going to enjoy the weather. I still haven't found a new boxing gym but that should soon be changing (hopefully). Wow I went off topic fast didn't I?

In summary, DW6 didn't entice me enough to buy it even if it would only cost me about $30.

meh... i tried completeing FFXII after i quit playing it the first time. i'd figured i was about half way through it when i quit the first time, and i promised myself i wouldn't grind the game to death so it wouldn't take so long. however, i did decide to try and explore everything along the way and i also wanted to make sure i picked up many of the items and abilities. after almost 90 hours of playing it the second time and recognizing i still had a ways to go i had to put it down again. that game is longer than the Bible!

FF is known for games that look cool and absorb way too much of your time.

so i was serving Liu Bei as an officer. i befriended Xiou Ti who immediately upon becomming my friend told me that i would fit perfectly within his plan to unite China. he suggested i revolt. so me, him, and Yue Ying (my posse at the time) revolted and took over a territory. i had to woop up on Zhang Fei, and i felt a little odd kicking it against Liu Bei but my character is a pirate type wearing all black and brandishing Liu Bei's swords - plus has a very calm and decisive demeanor Cao Pi style. so now i control three provinces including Luo Yang.

taking Luo Yang was especially interesting because after i stole my second province from Sun Ce i was approached by the Emperial Court and required to start paying tribute. i refused to which i was rebuffed by the Emperor's representative. so i immediately decided to sack Luo Yang with almost no troops in my army. it was controlled by Yuan Shao at the time, but i thought it approprate in a Gaiseric versus Rome sort of way. my Liu Bei weapon skills are pretty good so we took it with little trouble.

next on my agenda is to approach the game with a character that is not badarse like Liu Bei, Lu Bu, Diao Chan, etc. are and instead make use of strategy and troops to conquer. i'm thinking Sun Jian would be the appropriate weapon moveset for a good challenge. Huang Gai would of course require me to make use of my officers, troops, etc. otherwise, with any of the super-characters mentioned before the game can pretty effectively be conquered with a well leveled character and no army behing you. the Main Camp battles get a bit like weedwhacking which is only fun for so long.

Hey,

Apologies for not perusing the topic lists. Just ignore my post about DW6 Empires thoughts that came after this one here. Anyhow, I am just settling into the game now. I created a character in the Ogre getup and romped around under Sun Jian's rule in the Yellow Turban Rebellion until it was suggested I revolt. Ironically enough I had oaths with Sun Ce and Sun Quan, as well as friends with Sun Shang Xiang and Ling Tong.

So with them I dropped Sun Jian like yesterday's bran muffin. Nice kids eh?

What I've discovered so far is if you have alliances with rulers you can still invade, as well Ling Tong is back to the nunchakus. Also your character levels up faster when you are a ruler. Even better. Now I am in another game using Ling Tong, married to Xiao Qiao, and working my magic under Sun Ce's rule. Trying to see if I can beat the game not as a ruler.

I noticed Koei is going gung ho with all the bonuses. Thoughts?

I'm thinking of accusing you of insulting Wu, just to see if it pushes Hardy over the edge.

I wouldn't use your exact word though, I would make it up entirely and just blame it on you. Sound okay?

bonuses are good. that way you can unlock content like new costume colors for the mosou characters as well as wallpapers for the game. one thing i miss from DW is the items and the need to find/upgrade them. i wish they'd bring some of that back. or at least the ability to buy items. but the ability to train your character some with money as well as the ability to upgrade weapons with money is way coolness.

I've never trusted Internet or Magazine reviews, because in the end they're the reviewer's personal opions. I've always said buy the game and play it for yourself and then decide. The fact that each DW game is simply the previous one remade with better graphics, they're still fun games to play.
