Some guy from Norway came here around 900 and stayed for the winter. He was totally unprepared for the winter like some idiot and lost most of his cattle and sheep to starvation. He called the island Iceland out of pure butthurt and left. The name stuck and I think it's pretty good that it did, since other names they came up with were things like Garðarshólmi (Island of Garðar) and Snowland (Like some freaking theme park).

The dude who settled Greenland wanted more people to come join him in settling so he called it Greenland to make it sound better. An example of how barren and lifeless Greenland is, is that no one knows clearly what happened to the Norse colony in Greenland. When the Danes showed up around 1700 to make sure everything in Greenland was still nice and Christian all the Norse were dead or gone and everything was in ruins (also a bunch of Inuits everywhere which they hadn't been when the Norse first arrived).

I think the Irish women we brought here softened us up though. I mean, we're finally going to give the Icelandic Muslims a mosque this year! Although they are under a deal that the Russian Orthodox Church gets a church too. So if no Orthodox church, no mosque.

It's like the government is forcing them to work together. :P
