It's that time of year yet again!

Nintendo's press conference is scheduled for Tuesday morning, and everyone seems to be anticipating a full unveiling of the 3DS as well as a brand new console Zelda game. Pretty exciting, if I do say so myself (almost a bit overdo, actually). Let's hope for the best!

I don't really know what to expect from Nintendo this year. 3DS, Zelda, OH! Cammie talking for an hour about how cool and hip Vitality Sensor is! And then Reggie plays Wii Party on stage with Iwata, Cammie, and someone else. Yep, can't wait

Seriously though ... I hope they impress me and do something a little different than what we're used to.

I've been so out of the gaming loop lately I didn't even know it was E3 time until two days ago. Well, hopefully Nintendo will have something to surprise us with.

Ahhhh, so excited! Fifteen minutes 'til the conference begins! I am really hoping for a Zelda game to drool over for the next few months.

Ugh, I think this Zelda demo is demonstrating A) How outdated the Wii's technology is, B) How poor of a game player Miyamoto is and C) That they've pretty much wasted the past four years on a game that looks like it came straight out of 2004. I'm hoping what I see later from "Skyward Sword" is a little more impressive....

I'll give a quick rundown of my impressions:

  • To my surprise, one of the least exciting aspects of this conference was Zelda. It looks like a fugly cross of TP and WW, and they did a horrible job of demonstrating how the game works. I hope, for their sake, that it truly was technical difficulty
  • Nintendo needs to start giving less cheesy subtitles to their game... Skyward Sword? Epic Yarn? How about "Nintendo Corporation: WTF?"
  • On a much more positive note, the 3DS looks VERY promising, and I'm honestly pretty excited about it. Very impressive that they managed to get so many high-profile third party games for the system too. And those graphics? It's nice to see portable graphics evolve. There are still a lot of unanswered questions though - does it still use cartridges? When will it release? Is it going to have a ridiculous pricepoint? (I imagine it won't, considering Nintendo aims for mainstream, but still...)
  • Additionally, I must give Nintendo credit in that they are brilliant in dealing with the public. They had a much more professional and well put-together conference than Microsoft. They clearly know what they're doing.

Had Zelda not disappointed, I would have given this conference an A... but because it made me raise my eyebrows so much, I'll give Nintendo a B+. Much better than last year, though.

Hahahahaha

Well that was refreshing to come on here and see. It definitely looked pretty adorable, and even fun! I just wish they'd come up with a better name than "Epic Yarn".

In regards to the look of Skyward Sword, I have to agree. The style reminds me very much of Monkey Ball Banana Blitz. It's a sort of streamlined cartoony look that is bland and doesn't really fit the Zelda theme.

Completely agree. If you're going to do cel-shading, at least do it right... though I'd prefer to not have it at all in a Zelda game.

The Goldeneye remake looks bad. I know the Wii isn't suppose to be a powerhouse but that isn't an excuse for terrible looking graphics. The game looks like an early GC era game, you can do much better. I don't know what magic Nintendo does to make Galaxy and Metroid to look so good, but they need to help 3rd parties step up their graphics. I don't think the game has any potential, it's a subpar FPS by today's standards. Goldeneye was good back in the day, but we have progressed far beyond it; remaking it doesn't bring anything new to the FPS genre, there isn't any reason to be excited for the game. Getting back to the positives, Donkey Kong Country making a return is nice. The trailer showed a few twists on the classic gameplay but nothing major, hopefully they will bring something that truly wows me. I've never played a Kid Icarus game before so I don't have any nostalgia for the game, but I can say the new Kid Icarus game does look interesting. It seems to be an action adventure game with some neat elements and fast paced action. I'm looking forward to more of the game. Metroid: The Other M looks promising like always. I really want to get some hands-on previews.

Judging from the reaction of critics and media members, I think it's fair to say Nintendo has won E3 out of the "big three". They really didn't hold back, and presented everything you'd expect to have in a gaming press conference. As one of the Gamespot editors pointed out, they didn't need to give everyone free hardware to garner applause, they let the games do all of the talking.

EDIT: IGN is saying that there is strong evidence of Ocarina of Time being remade for the 3DS! (there are even screens) ... I think that this, combined with a remake of Starfox 64 and an awesome-looking new Mario Kart, completely solidify this as one of my favorite E3s of all time.

Ahhhh! I just can't believe how excited Nintendo has me! The only disappointments I've found here, are that the Metal Gear Solid and Kingdom Hearts games are remakes (well, MGS is... no confirmation on KH, but it looks like one), and that they still haven't announced a launch date for the 3DS. But those definitely aren't enough to keep me from being psyched!

And I'm really curious to see what they do with the Starfox 64 remake. Online co-op, maybe? That would be sweet.

Nintendo won e3 hands down. Everyone I talked to at school agreed (and seriously, it's a school of game devs lol). 3DS alone announced more games than they had to, even if it's just titles. Street Fighter IV, Saints Row, Resident Evil, THREE Shin Megami Tensei games, f***ing Paper Mario, there's just so much there that no one can rightfully complain about it.

As for the Wii, they did fine, MUCH better than Sony and especially Microsoft. Donkey Kong, Kirby, Zelda (everyone I've talked to loves it, high poly-count Ocarina of Time graphics-style); and Goldeneye is pure nostalgia, it will sell millions on name alone, Activision knows this, they know they don't have to make it look good even though they really should.

I wouldn't really see the point in that. I feel like that's what the touch screen is for.

First of all I think the new Zelda game looks ok. I mean, let's face it; the Wii can't pull off realistic graphics like the Xbox 360 so a return to cell-shading seems fitting. But using the TP Link for that? Well that's just odd but I hope the game turns out to be good.

I freakin' love the 3DS, but come on.... PSP graphics?? At this point I'm more interested in seeing what kind of graphics the PSP2 coul pull out instead. Plus the console just looks awful when the lid is closed (phat DS anyone?) I might wait for a redesign, I mean seriously after having the sexy DS Lite and DSi why go back to a look à la Phat DS? Graphics, as I said, are not bad considering it's still a major progress over the DS but it's nothing we haven't already seen; the PSP has had pretty much the same (if not slightly superior) graphics for 5 years.

But as for the games? I'm loving it :D

^ The 3DS has shown stuff I have yet to see on a PSP, PSP looks great, and the fact that the 3DS looks as good if not better is pretty amazing. The PSP does not have to render everything twice like the 3DS does, so it is a very large step up. I'll say it again, Skyward Sword looks great, I'd love to try it myself, but that won't happen for a while. I'm very happy with what I've seen (it really isn't quite so cell shaded though as they've done for the 'Wind Waker series', no more cell shaded than Mario Galaxy or the new Donkey Kong, it just looks good).

Nintendo definitely impressed me the most, Sony in second, and Microsoft put me to sleep. I'm excited to be playing Portal 2 next year on my PS3 (no way my PC will be able to handle it, and the PS3 version will have cross platform play with PC anyway). Twisted Metal looked okay, not a big deal for me since I haven't played the series before. Sly Collection though I do want, as I never played those games either, and if its as good of a bargain as the God of War Collection it will be great. AND a solid release date for Gran Turismo 5! (very excited)

That's a tad overdramatic. IGN has spoken with developers that claim the tech specs under the hood are more comparable to a 360 than a Wii, and the first round of games never really demonstrate what a console/handheld is ACTUALLY capable of. I mean, it varies from game to game, if you were going by the crappy submarine game Nintendo's been showing off, then it doesn't look that impressive. But, if you're judging by Metal Gear Solid or Mario Kart, then you'll leave pretty impressed. Far better than the PSP can do (which I believe isn't even quite as powerful as a PS2), and more than made up for with the 3D aspect of it all. Remember, we really can't judge on any of this until we see the handheld for ourselves. And I really don't understand why you think it looks so awful? It looks just like a DS, only with the screens looking funnily disproportioned.

Also, let us not forget that the graphical difference between the DS and PSP last generation was also what caused the PRICE difference.

I must say the trailer for Resident Evil: Revelations is BEAUTIFUL (http://kotaku.com/5569362/see-resident-evil-3ds-in-action). If that was all CG than it probably would have looked better than it does, as you can clearly see polygons and some aliasing, but that doesn't mean it doesn't look amazing

Looks pretty good to me. I'd imagine the actual graphics being comparable to RE4, which is pretty impressive, in my opinion.

I don't where you get your info from buddy but a demo game is SUPPOSED to show what the system is capable of and if (according to youin this case) it fails to do that than it doesn't promise much.

Also it baffles me as to how you can think that Metal Gear Solid 3D looks  FAR better than Peace Walker, get a 2nd check.

As for the 3D aspect, I agree that we need to wait to get our hands on it to judge it. It MAY also affect the graphical display (meaning that it would somehow look better in motion).

When I said that the console looks awful when the lid is closed I was talking about it's shape. With the DS Lite you get a perfectly rounded rectangle but with 3DS you get disproportionate shape that only reminds you of the DS Phat.

Graphics were only ONE of the factors as to why the PSP phat was overpriced; the thing was loaded with lots of useless features that got stripped off when the PSP Slim was released. Plus it was far more powerful than the DS and was capable of so much more. Sony basically put a monster in your hands (back in 2005) and all that was way too soon and expensive for it's time. Hopefully Sony learned it's mistakes and will strike back much harder at Nintendo this gen.

I'm experiencing some serious deja vu right now, Lebs.

Either way, it's premature to be judging on any of this. The 3DS won't be out until next year, so it still has plenty of time to be perfected. I'm not expecting the handheld to look the same the next time we see it, and I really don't think it's fair to judge the system graphically until we see it with our own eyes. Although I personally don't quite get the complaints, it's a major upgrade graphically from the DS, and developers seem to be happy with it.

As for the PSP, I hope Sony just lets the brand die. The real portable war is between Nintendo and Apple, not Nintendo and Sony.

Ha, same here.

You know you talk an awful lot about not judging the system until it comes out and whatnot.... yet you rule out Sony's potential next handheld without even knowing a single detail about it. For all we know it could become the next big thing.... or not.

3DS visuals are much better than the DS's and that's good, I just think that Nintendo could have made it much better without making it more expensive or anything. Some other people also agree that visuals could have been better, even if it's for other reasons. Oddly enough, this is also coming from developpers.

Of course the visuals could be better, even with the 3DS, what they've shown is primarily 3D. If a developer decides 3D wouldn't work well for their game, then from what I've seen, Nintendo won't do anything to stop them from using the extra processing power for better graphics. Some games will utilize 3D very well, while some (most likely RPGs or similar that wouldn't benefit from better depth perception) could very well look on par with the current HD consoles (if you do some math, you'll see the 3DS screen is comparable to a 16 inch 1080p monitor).

As for Sony ... when they do make a new handheld, I hope it is compatible with the current PSP games because that could very well get me to buy one. There are plenty of PSP games I want, I just don't have the money to spend on a console when there are so many games for what I already have. Sony started slow this generation, but they have picked up a lot of momentum in the last couple years while Microsoft continues to rely on timed exclusives games/content (and the occasional Halo/Gears/Fable/Forza), Sony and Nintendo are both releasing great first party games.

A little late but Nintendo did take the show. I am glad to see the New Zelda. Yes, it looks different but I don't wantto judge by how it looks. As long the adventure and story are different I am happy. I am looking forward to Donkey Kong the most along with Kirby. Nintendo really showed the games this year. As for the 3DS, that looks sweet! The system is to come out before March 2011. Nintendo noted that it will be released before the end of the fiscal year.
