Balthier plays the role of a sky pirate as well, in FFT. He has no nationality. And, he's what you call the "FREE" guy, and doesn't believe in the "norm" practices in Ivalice itself. Searching for treasures and all, and something called the Secret Treasure of "Ga-ro-ba-do-su" {probably translated into "Galobados"Â or something, whatever that is}. Â
Or rather, he's a mysterious guy, to begin with.
Somehow, i think he gets entangled into the story, don't know how, and i guess it'll be up to the player after all. :?

Umm, i think Wiki is a good source of information. It's based on the original FFT released in 1997. Nothing much that is different. But the official english website (1997) is accessible here too.
