Soon as I saw this topic I knew it was more of "I know how FF started, I wonder how many others do" (BTW, most of us do) so I decided to do the witty thing and turn the topic against you.
Uhm as far as I remember there was Nintendo, a group wanted to make the Snes station or something and made up Sony and developed the Playstation but uhh yeah FF was around before that. Square Soft were in financial difficulties and made Final Fantasy as their Final game they though but well it god damn saved them, thank god too.
Nintendo wanted to make a CD attachment for the Super Nintendo that would double the power of it and allow it to do solid 3D as well as have much bigger games. They originally hired Sony to do it. Sony drew up the plans for it and called it the Playstation. Nintendo bounced back and forth a couple of times between Sony and Phillips (who developed the Phillips CDI which actually has 3 not just bad but absolutely effing terrible embarrassment to all of gaming Zelda games) on who would develope it and eventually scrapped the project all together. It was because of them that Sony first got the idea of developing a video game system, thus the Playstation was born. By doing that, Nintendo basically sunk themselves into dead last for the next 2 generations of consoles. That and making the N64 cartridge based instead of CD based. That was a HUGE mistake as well. Games cost more to produce on cartridges than they did on CDs....alot more. Playstation discs could be sold for about half he price of the N64 cartridge. As a result of that, the Playstation started consistently going up in sales. Third parties started leaving Nintendos camp and joining Playstations camp in droves. The N64 ultimately got it's ass kicked. It got vastly outsold and, quite franly, the PSX was a better system in many ways. Infact, Gametrailers voited the original PS the number one video game system of all time, and it's an excellent choice. The game selection is virtually unparalelled on any console before or since. There were so many classics for that system that one can't hardly keep up with it all. In sheer volume of great games. even the PS2 could not compete with it

I'll stop the insults on ff5 and ff6 since ive came to realize that ff6 has a great cast of characters i like edgar, sabin, celes, terra, locke, shadow,hell and interceptor was a likable dog.

IT makes more sense to think of Terra as her right name in the context that it IS Final Fantasy. How often are characters given 'just a name' instead of a name with some meaning behind it?

I still tend to think that Terra was correctly translated. They didn't correct themselves when they labeled the second world in FFIX Terra. IT was meant as one of many references to previous games in the series
