I'm not so sure. With both of those bands almost their entire former CD was gold, but then they try and go in a new direction.
And that didn't work too well.

if ur talking about them going mainstream no not really i dont see it too much but if u wanna talk about bands like LP and Coldplay yeah they are bands that went mainstream
Metallica's new album wasn't bad :o better than alot of what's out there and better than St. Anger (i think?) where they just completely changed their style of music.

ummm yeah a day to remembers new album definatley doesnt suck but i do see where you coming from like the new Guns & Roses album sucks (because no slash!) and Metallica;s new album is awful
Chinese Democracy wasn't so bad. I liked how Axl tried to mix things up by using more industrial oriented tracks instead of the same ol' pop-metal cliches. Death Magnetic wasn't that bad either. They actually changed the way they produced the CD after St Anger, Load & Reload. Besides, any song on there can slaughter any of the crappy poser-metal of the 00's :P

I'm looking for something new to listen to at the moment. Something that has awesome guitar.
I would suggest Dream Theatre. The guitarist and Henry Cho from Dragonforce learned from each other. The band itself plays in a more technical and complicated way than Dragonforce altough it's also a slower and melodic compared to them. Oh and they play some of the songs with odd tunings like E-E-B-B-B-E and still make them sound like thrash metal songs :P
