It seems that you got the point. These are very good for starting banners. At this moment I can only suggest tutorials, cuz I don't know any specific technique for banner making, specially, when they don't include renders. I suggest to start with more simple images, like sigs.

the thing about banners is that they're long. so you have to make sure all the attention is drawn to the focal point as much as possible. you need to make it stand out much more too, and preferably choose large focals, to avoid as much empty space as possible.
this is enough for an average banner. now if you break some of those rules with a purpose, it might look worse, or it might look great.
another trick banner makers tend to do is split the focal point in various areas. kinda like making various sigs and mixing them together.
