DELBARTON, W.Va. -- Paul McCoy ran for 658 yards in a high school football game and, believe it or not, might not have set a national record with his feat.

The total tops the National Federation of State High School Association's listed record of 619 yards set by Ronney Jenkins of Oxnard, Calif., in 1995. But high school records historian Doug Huff said Saturday the recognized record is 739 yards by John Giannantonio of Netcong, N.J., in 1950, against Mountain Lakes.

McCoy piled up his yardage on just 29 carries -- an average of 22.7 yards per attempt -- and scored 10 touchdowns as Matewan beat Burch 64-0 on Friday. McCoy racked up 477 of his yards scoring on TD runs of runs, which covered 69, 1, 52, 56, 52, 20, 31, 84, 87 and 25 yards.

He also had a 77-yard TD run called back because of a penalty.

"The National Federation book for some reason does not include that [the 739 yards], and I think the reason is there's a formal process for submitting those things," Huff said Saturday. "This school doesn't exist anymore. The papers recognized it. The school had a special ceremony. It's been in my records for years."

McCoy did set a state record with his 658 yards, and his 10 TDs would tie him with two others for the second most nationally. The record is 12, set by Ken Pearson of Hugo, Colo., in 1930.

McCoy, averaging 345 yards per game, has 1,723 yards and 26 touchdowns this season.

If I were the other team, I would of just stacked up my line to stop the run from that guy after at least the 5th touchdown.

The coach who kept the kid in to run for that many yards should be fired and should not be able to coach ever again. Has he heard of sportsmanship? After being up 30, he should have just started taking a knee. As for the kid, good for him.

that is the stupidest thing i've ever heard. if all you're doing is simply running up the gut and the other team can't stop it, there's not much you can do. and just taking a knee early in the 3rd quarter is worse than keeping on with the run. let me guess, what the coach really should have done is tell his kids to hand the other team the ball right? and yes, i have seen things like this before when a team was decimating an opponent.

Nothing Special.  They were probably playing a terrible team and the coach was just running up the score.  If I was the other team I would have walked off the field.

Running up the score? I could've sworn I saw somewhere that they only scored like 65 points. If I'm wrong I'll shut up.

I thought I heard 90. Not sure though. And ONLY 65 points? Damn, I've never seen 65 scored in a HS game before.

Yeah, 153 lbs just won't cut for a Div. 1 RB. They could do what they do to many good high school RBs, make them gain some weight and make them play DB.

He' looking into Southern Cal, West Virginia and Marshall? With his size, Marshall may be tough, much less the other two.
