I'd go with Flowers by Rozz Williams. What about you? What is your favorite sad story?

If I like gloomy tones, I must hand it down to the Cure. Their songs might have a jolly rhythm, but if you listen to the lyrics, they can be pretty sad. Example: Just like Heaven.
It's a lovesong on its own, but the ending of it is gloomy enough.
I found myself, alone, alone in a raging sea, that drowned the only girl I loved deep inside of me.
There's Jupiter Crash, and pretty much all of Wild Mood Swings from them is a gloomy enough. That murky tone really sets me down, but it's amazing. Want is a song from them that is actually more rage than gloom. Really, The Cure is amazing when it comes to sad songs.

Fade To Black by Metallica, and the cover of this song recorded by Sonata Arctica. :)

Pretty much every song from "The Wall" (Pink Floyd), they're sad as well as depressing.

I second Katatonia and also put in Xasthur - Prison of Mirrors. I can just feel my very soul being drained from me, also if you're not a fan of lo-fi ambient black metal then stay away you will probably consider it noise.

I enjoy the music of Katatonia so much that I don't even consider their music to be "sad".

Pretty sad, eh?

From their early Death/Doom, on into their spooky stuff, and now their contemporary music - all of it is great. VERY dark, without question, but beautiful.

I would like to maybe suggest Leviathan (the US Depressive Black Metal band, not the Grind people) - also very horrific and utterly mournful ... devoid of any hope. Excellent music.
