how do you learn to play new songs?

when you hear a song you like, and you want to learn to play it, how do you learn it? lyrics? tabs? by ear? what is your preffered method?

tabs and sheet music, I'm horrible at learning by ear.

The only songs I can learn by ear are really simple songs made up of power chords. Otherwise I use tabs.
