I don't know if many of you guys listen to this kind of music but this thread concerns the song Airplanes by B.o.B ft Hayley Williams.

Now, someone I know kept saying that Hayley (Front woman of Paramore (I hope you guys already knew that )) sold out by doing that song.

Personally I think thats rubbish. Firstly, judging my Paramore's huge success and fan base, I don't think money would be an issue for any of the band members. So I don't think she'd do it for the money.

Secondly, I think she'd probably do the song based on the fact that shes passionate about her music. Maybe she thought it would be nice to do something different.

And thirdly, she's just hot. Im sorry but she is :) Im going to kidnap her when I see them in november and keep her in my cupboard :)

What do you guys think about this? .....not me kidnapping her, the whole sell out thing :P

I don't think she sold out at all.

If she did then Redman sold out when he did that song with Pink and later on with Christina Aguilera.

I don't even get the whole concept of 'selling out', if an artist wants to release a certain style of music or collaborate with certain other artists, then why the hell not

Some people call an artist a sell-out because they at times don't like to be open minded.

I remember when Puffy did a collaboration with Jimmy Page, they called Page a sell out because he did something with a rapper.  Some folks are just stupid.

I don't think it was the fact he was a rapper. I think it was just because it was Puffy :P

Selling out is when an artist abandons their old style and morals in an attempt to get fame and riches.

Metallica is the best example (I don't care for any of their music, but that's besides the point). They started off as a thrash band, with the emphasis on their music being the rhythm, but The Black Album was definately a mainstream album, with the aggression they had before taken away and the emphasis was put on the melody.

If you like Metallica's newer stuff fine, they still sold out

I get that, but I still think that the artist is fine to make that decision, it is their work after all

If it is fine for the regular person to seek riches and fame through whatever career they do, why shouldn't it be the same for musicians

Not saying have to like it as we all have our own music tastes, but the way some people go on about it is a bit ridiculous imo :P

Musicians shouldn't because they will gain a loyal fanbase with the music they start with. They'll have fans who truely love and respect their type of music (of course they will if they sell out, but that's besides the point) and when they sell out they're basically giving their old fans the finger and doing what they want regardless of those who like their music the way it is.

They forget where they came from, and those who helped them get their name out

Well if their fans were loyal then shouldn't they respect the fact that the musician would like to something different? Or maybebe a bit more open minded?

If their favorite band ever decided to release a completely different styled album that appealed to the masses, then obviously they're gonna feel betrayed, as if they're trying to just get rich, regardless of whether or not that's what they're actually doing (although usually that is what they're doing)

Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Kreator, Slipknot (who actually started off as a Death Metal band under a different name, but I guess they did change their name so whether or not they sold out depends on who you're talking to), and I can't think of any others atm. Slayer and Metallica did release solid albums last year, though.

oh yeah, Ice Cube sold out big time.

anyone who says Nirvana sold out is ****ing retarded, though. Sure, they signed to a major record company (which is what I believe drove Kurt to his death) but they continued to do what they wanted, regardless of what the record company wanted

He was a hardcore gangster and now he's a star in children movies. I don't think he ever once thought "Hey, I wanna be in children movies" when he was a teenager in Compton. He might have, but I doubt it.

He hasn't sold out.  He said that he'd doing these movies so that his kids can enjoy movies he's been in when they grow up.  I think he's just grown up.

I'd say that as a kid growing up in Compton, he probably didn't think he'd be alive at this age.

add BFMV,Green Day,AFI,Franz Ferdinand to that list altho i would say FF is more an evolution of them as a band as there is some electronica elements in their first 2 albums.

Fame itself drove Cobain to what he became, pretty sure Krist and Dave commented on it at various points....Then there is the wreck of a woman known as Courtney love.

Personally i dont like aeroplanes prolly cause its on the work bout every friggin 30min -_-
