What theme do you think fits Twisted Metal better? Do you like the cartoon feel like in TM Head On, or do you think the dark scary feeling like Twisted Metal: Black fits the Twisted Metal series better?

My favorite game in the series is Black, so I think I'm a little biased, but I like both themes. I just think once the stories got as dark as they did with Black, I was hooked on that theme. I loved TM2 and loved the stories when I first saw them, but they can't compare to the Black storylines. Maybe it's because I'm older, but looking back, the cartoony stories are kind of corny, and I like the more realistic ones.

Both of them were great, but Black's was more memorable. I even used a cheat so I could see all of the endings when I first got it.

Ah man. I hate that. I like being able to get really good with character and eventually unlocking the videos. Gotta admit it took me forever to beat the game with Axel and Yellow Jacket.

Personally, I like both but I would say that the theme/feel of Black fits Twisted Metal more than the cartoonish feeling of Twisted Metal Head On. To me Twisted Metal black was more realistic.

David Jaffe seems like the type of guy who favors the classic cartoony kind. However, with the new game being on the PS3, I think Sony wants Jaffe to flex it's muscles and show off a really cool graphical game.

Depends on how they are done. As I see it, Twisted Metal Black had better landscapes in the way appearance. Although I respected TMHO for going for the catoony route, It was obvious a little more refining could have been done to both versions.

David Jaffe always talks about how developers should flex the PS3's muscles, it would be pretty disappointing if he didn't take his own advice. Plus he thought Calling all Cars was going to be a huge hit on the PSN, but recognized that it failed. I doubt he'd risk making two cartoony car games in a row.

I think all games should be realistic honestly. Cartoony games are something of the past and the now is all about graphics and making games as real as possible.

Hardly. Look at Henry Watsworth for the DS. Cartoony as they come and its easily one of the best games of the year. Giving Twisted Metal realistic graphics would be like stripping the sould from the game. Because in real life, there aren't any homicidal closwn with their heads on fire.

fair point made, but, take FFVIII, great game, realistic graphics, after playing it i was tempted to play FFVII, but after seeing the screenshots for it, i was turned away because the graphics looked too cartooney, it felt like stepping back abit

flatout 2 is another example, great game, great graphics, you can tell its real because the vehicle damage looks realistic

theres some things a cartoon game cannot do, so TM really belongs in the Realistic graphics section

I totally understand your point, but the keyword in your argument was the DS. The DS is a console that isn't known for putting out games with great graphics, because it can't compete with next-gen consoles in that area. I love DS games because they remind me of the old school games I grew up with, but I would never buy a cartoony game for a next gen console because it just feels like a waste of money. Obviously there aren't any killer clowns running around, but this is a game. It can be fake and still feel realistic. Look at the Dark Knight. Obviously there isn't a guy running around in a Bat suit trying to stop a psycho clown from killing people, but the movie still had a realistic feel to it compared to other superhero movies.

But his head isn't on fire! lol

And FFVII didn't have realistic graphics. If it did, we wouldn't have fingers and our heads would be three times the size they are now.

Fair enough on Hatsworth being on the DS, but how about Valkyria Chronicles or Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm on the PS3? Thos aren't realistic, and they're some of the best looking games on any console. Another good example is Okami on the PS2. If the art style is good enough, the graphics don't need to be too realistic. Plus, you avoid any chance of the uncanny valley, where video game characters look like something out of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Eyes that glisten but never blink and the like. Heavy Rain is a good example of that. The characters are technically impressive but are just plain creepy.

but though what we are trying to say is that next gen consoles look very good in realistic graphics, the ds does look sweet in cartoon graphics but it isnt a next gen console, if a game came out cartooney on the ps3/xbox 360, it would feel like taking a step backwards and thats not what we want

Ok. But the three games I just listed are NOT on the DS, featured an animated look, and are simply fantastic! Overly realistic graphics don't fit in with the Twisted Metal idea. Black looked amazing and I wouldn't call those graphics "realistic" at all! What you're talking about sounds like adding guns to Gran Turismo, and it just wouldn't feel right. I'm not saying that a TM game should look like a saturday moring cartoon. Not at all. I'm saying that it needs a stylized look, like Black, in order to work. Remember, these are vehciles that can transform into missile spewing robots, cause a tornado by spinning vertically, and shoot giant skulls! If you try to make that realistic, then its going to come out ridiculous!

you have put 2 sides of the argument into one sentence. youve started off by saying TMB was great, but then you go on saaying that men with a flaming head looks ridiculous,

but though but TMB VS TM:HO gameplay on both of them were great and the graphics looked gud, but though this is all down to personal preference, the cutscenes to TMB were way more impressive

it was styled to look realistic to a certain degree because it was on the ps2

if it was on the next gen console it could well be a different story

I can see what your saying. Black was like a step up from from TM2, but kept the same style. Yeah, some of the stories were pretty far fetched and had many flaws, but I can just picture the new game to be the same way GoW3 looks as of now. It looks the same as GoW2 but graphically better. It's a beat em up game with a cool story to it. It's the same thing for TM. The style and setup of the game won't change, but if the graphics went from what Black was back to, say, Small Brawl, people would be pissed. Just think of it as Legend of Zelda going from Ocarina of Time, with great realistic graphics on the N64, to the Wind Waker with the cel-shaded graphics. Generally, people didn't like the change because it felt like a step back in the franchise even though Wind Waker is a really good game.

Perhaps. But again, I'm not advocating a Small Brawl type look here. I HATED Small Brawl's look. I DON'T want a cartoon, but I DON'T want a Forza/Gran Turismo game with guns!

I'd like to see more of the detail from a game like Forza or Gran Turismo, except I would want to have destructible body parts so that your vehicle shows damage where it was actually hit, and not when you reach a certain point in your health meter. However, I wouldn't want racing simulator controls as well, I'd like the controls of Twisted Metal Black for these cars. However, for all these element to come together to work and present itself well, I'm not sure if the technology is there yet.

I agree. I think the controls for Black don't get much better and honestly the controls have pretty much been the same since the beginning. I just don't think we're gonna get the perfect 10 rating. I'm thinking along the lines of an 8.5. I hope I'm wrong.

That would be really great, but I'm expecting a game arouond the 7.0-8.0 range. I'm really hoping I'll be proved wrong though, I'd love to see the new TM crush the competition of the time like Twisted Metal 2 and Twisted MEtal Black did.

Yikes. I hope its not a 7. That would be really disappointing. Especially since a TM game seems to only be made for a main console once every 7 or 8 years it feels.

I want to see more Twisted Metal games, but I want them to be good. We don't need repeats of Twisted Metal 3, which only had 9 months to be developed. If I had a choice between having a Twisted Metal game out every year that wasn't that great, or an awesome Twisted Metal game every 2 years, I would much prefer the wait. Still, There seems to be a lot of beating-around-the-bush going on with the next TM, if it's a wait like that it's pointless really. But with Jaffe working on this one, I think this game is heading in the right direction.

I think the thing is that they don't consider TM to be one of the marqee franchises anymore. Elsewise we'd have gotten on the PS3 by now. Although it is possible they're actually worried about a stinker hurting the franchise a bit, so they waited until they could get Jaffe.

I think if they were going to make a cartoon-style Twisted Metal, they'd have to go all-out cartoony. I'd like to see a cell-shaded Twisted Metal. I really like the art style, I thik it would work great in the Twisted Metal environment, as far as battles and cut-scenes go.

If they were to make the game all out cartoony, then it would appeal to a younger audience. If this is the case, the stories would be lame like TM3 and 4, and the game would suck. If the stories were darker as a cartoony game, it wouldn't seem right as a game. If just don't see the two meshing very well.

Well, of course it was aimed at kids, but if they were to put it in a larger scale, I think it would work fine. And I think if the cut-scenes were be a mix between being cartoony like TM2 and TMHO, and include some of the maturity and darkness of TMB, I think it would great.

Yeah no kidding, I don't get why they try to keep an anticipation for these games. I think they've gone too far with this waiting BS. If people know your making a game, why not just throw some information at them, namely a title at least. I can understand waiting for a polished product to reveal some screens, but it's been forever. Give us a name, and some character sketches or something. This long wait is just getting annoying.

But if they blow all of thier surprises before the big shows and have nothing to show off, everyone will be **** about it.

Besides, once they start putting out information, we'll demand a release date. And they're probably not even close to that.

*sigh*

Yeah but don't you wish that at some point at E3 the lights went out and all you heard was Sweet Tooth's laugh. That would have been sick. People get the idea that the games being made, but obviously it's still really early to give much else. It would have been like Modern Warfare 2 where the basically announced the game and showed people nothing at the same time, but people were excited at the same time.
