I'm a little shy about posting in this shiny new board so I hope this is the right place for it. In case Synthia or Jody were looking for contributions to future topics for Chalk Talk, I came up with a few ideas that you might want to have a look at. I know Synthia posted a topic on this board about what people wanted to talk about but I think that was more for when people were actually submitting their work if I understood it right.
Anyway, here they are:
Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex...
As games continue to present sexuality in a more mature context with examples such as The Witcher 2 and Mass Effect 3, has sex in games finally reached a respectable level that can be taken seriously? For developers, do they present more difficult questions about how to approach believable character interaction and do they help to reinforce narrative structure for gamers themselves to experience? Another issue to consider is how sex in games is viewed by non-gamers and the media and the more complex issues that arise when sex is portrayed in an interactive form of entertainment.
The Horror...the horror...
With the release of Dead Space 3 arguably pushing that franchise firmly into action shooter territory, perhaps its time to examine what makes a great horror game. Is it the slow tension of survival horror, the relentless throat grabbing of action horror like Dead Space 2 and F.E.A.R. or do games require a more psychological approach to truly be considered horror? Do games like the Silent Hill franchise and its continuing focus on character disintegration highlight the need for character as well as atmosphere?
The Platform Wars
In late January, it was revealed by Gamespot that next generation consoles would contain hardware that could match that of high-end PCs closer than ever before. With consoles seemingly making a push to overtake the PC and with the access to other media forms already available through Xbox connect, does this mean the platform will become less relevant for gamers or does it still have features that consoles will never be able to touch? Is it the modding community and the versatility of PC customisation that ensures it still has a place in the lives of many gamers? What defines the PC to you and how do you think it can maintain its place in the gaming industry as a leading platform in the future?
