well it was the 1997 survivor series and it was shawn michaels vs bret hart. bret hart was thinking about going to wcw as they were giving him offers much better than wwf. vince thought that bret was going to go to wcw and take thw wwf title and put it in the bin and humiliate vince and wwf so without shawn michales knowing during the match at SS hbk had bretr hart in the sharpshooter and then all of a sudden vince ran out and told the ref to call a tap out but bret never tapped and was screwed out of the wwf title. some say hbk had nothing to do with it. but he was a part of it. bret then left wwf and went to wcw

Honestly, I think Vince did the right thing, although I know that I'm in the minority. Alundra Blaze, aka Medusa(on WCW) did the same thing to Vince before the screwjob. She took the WWF Women's Title, and dropped it in the garbage on Nitro.
Now, you can say that Vince should have "taken Bret's word", since Bret was supposed to drop the belt the following night on Raw anyway. But, Vince was screwed before. Lex Luger, Scott Hall, and Kevin Nash all assured Vince that they'd resign with WWF before their contracts were up(Luger's incident was before Nash & Hall). All of them then went to WCW for more money. Vince felt that he couldn't trust anyone's word anymore.

actually Shawn did know about it but didnt admit it til like 2001. He knew that Bret was gonna get screwed over but he didnt know when and with what move.
