The Arizona Republic reports today that WWE officials have been in talks with representatives from University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., home of the Arizona Cardinals NFL team, for WrestleMania 2010 to be held in the stadium. WWE has already toured the retractable roof stadium, which can hold up to 73,000 people, to evaluate the possibility of running WrestleMania there.
Global Spectrum, which promotes big concert and sporting events, including WrestleMania 24 in Orlando this year, is working on a written proposal for WWE and Univ. of Phoenix stadium officials. A decision on the bid isn't expected for a few months. "It's certainly not a done deal but we've had some good dialogue," said Global Spectrum spokesman Scott Norton.
The first reports of Mania being held outside of Phoenix came when current Phoenix Coyotes coach and legendary hockey player Wayne Gretzky was photographed wearing a "WrestleMania 2010: Destruction in the Desert" promotional t-shirt. Gretzky said he liked the shirt, so he took it home.
