CM Punk, now a budding superstar meant so much to Ring of Honor. He might not have had the best matches every show, but his presence and aura on each show, was just as important as having the best match on a show. Thus the MVP Award for Ring of Honor was named for CM Punk. The winner of the 2006 CM Punk Award with 63 votes this year is American Dragon Bryan Danielson. As many fans of exclaimed over the years, ROH’s overall product keeps getting better each year. Well, as the promotion’s product improves so do the wrestlers themselves. Winning the Most Improved ROH Wrestler for 2006 was Nigel McGuinness. McGuinness had tremendous battles for the ROH World Title against American Dragon Bryan Danielson, as well as a great match with Roderick Strong, and other top notch bouts defending the belt he helped establish as the top Title in Ring of Honor, the Pure Title. McGuinness received 56 total votes. Finishing second was Delirious, the man with the mask and lizard face to boot improved greatly in connecting with the crowd and even has his own fan who sports a similar mask at live events. Delirious received 21 total votes. The third place finisher was Matt Sydal who captured 13 votes, one half of the ROH World Tag Team Titles with Christopher Daniels.
Other Wrestlers Receiving votes included, BJ Whitmer(5 Votes), Jimmy Jacobs(4 Votes), and the following each receiving one vote each, Jack Evans, Ricky Reyes, Roderick Strong, and Shane Hagadorn.
Formally CM Punk, as well as Austin Aries, and now American Dragon Bryan Danielson head up the Ring of Honor Wrestling Academy. Their students have worked hard setting up and tearing down the ring as well as seats, and the entry way. They also hone their skills at the school and in matches on the pre-show at most Ring of Honor events. Over time the students have improved in the ring, with some even earning big wins over Jimmy Rave and Delirious this year. Winning the award for most improved ROH Student in 2006 was Adam Pearce’s Man Servant and tag team partner Shane Hagadorn with a total of 48 votes. Hagadorn is greatly hated by the fans at every show he’s on. The total opposite in terms of endearment to the fans of ROH is Pelle Primeau, who finished closely behind Hagadorn with 45 votes. Primeau’s big win over Jimmy Rave at Motor City Madness in the Six Man Mayhem Match, was a prime showcase of the care the fans have for his hard work.
Other Students Receiving votes included, Bobby Dempsey and Mitch Franklin, with one vote each.
2006 will be remembered as a year when CZW invaded, Chris Hero took over, Homicide slaying the dragon, Jimmy’s quest for Lacey’s affection, and much more. 2007 has now arrived, and questions remain. How long with Homicide remain the ROH World Champion? Will Chris Hero continue to wreak havoc with Larry Sweeney? Can Jimmy Rave rise up and take what he wants? The votes are, and the shining star for 2007 as voted by you the fan is Jimmy Rave with 34 votes. Rave has his shot at history on February 17, 2006 in New York City as he attempts to take the ROH World Title from, Homicide. Finishing second was Nigel McGuinness who garnered 23 votes. Rounding out the top three was Davey Richards who earned 12 votes.
Other Wrestlers Receiving votes included, Mark & Jay Briscoe(8 Votes), Brent Albright(6 Votes), Matt Sydal(5 Votes), BJ Whitmer(4 Votes), Chris Hero(3 Votes), Delirious(2 Votes), Homicide(2 Votes), and Bryan Danielson, Irish Airborne(Dave & Jake Crist), and Jimmy Jacobs each receiving one vote a piece.
This has been the Official 2006 Ring of Honor Awards. This year would not have been as successful as it was if not for the wrestlers, the Ring of Honor staff, and the fans. It will be very hard to top 2006, but if any promotion can do it, it’s Ring of Honor.
