Cena has the STF(u) and Punk may bring back the Anaconda Vice, plus the Walls of Jericat. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

So we're talking about Submissions and Montreal, huh? I smell the 953rd Screwjob rehash.

I s'pose, looking for silver linings (which is, of course, what I'm best at) this PPV could be used to restore the importance of submissions in other matches. It should force guys to come up with viable submission finishes that add drama to other matches...

Or we're going to see lots of Crossfaces, Anklelocks, Sharpshooters and Liontamers

However, on the down side, with only handful of submissions being over, I could see the crowd not giving a **** for most of this PPV.

Yeah, that's kind of the unavoidable consequence of WWE's systematic downplaying of submissions. Just looking for some positives.

You'd think WWE, since they came up with this dumbass idea, would be trying to get some submissions over with the crowd, but I certainly haven't noticed anything.

EDIT: Has there actually been anything official (as in not from the internet) that this will be a "submission themed" PPV? Do we know for certain that "submission themed" means every match on the show and not just the big matches? Maybe WWE realized that it was a bad idea, but liked the idea of a name change. Maybe there's hope.

Canada won't be if Shawn Michaels shows up.

Then have him face some up and comer who is a face because if they are against HBK, then they will be very pro-"whoever he faces."

Hmm, let's see...who is an up and coming babyface that would benefit the most from a match like this against HBK...

I can't think of anyone...

It has been over a decade. Unless WWE were to go out of their way to remind people about the Screwjob (which they may well do), I'd be surprised if there was anything but overwhelmingly positive sentiment for HBK. This should be a whole new generation of fans.

However, Canada's just weird enough to remain unpredictable.

If Chris Jericho isn't the biggest face on the planet, Canada epic fails.

Speaking of which, it will be interesting to see if Chris Jericho can pull a Edge, and be able to be have the Canadian crowd go from cheers to jeers in a matter of minutes. In the "modern" era, to me, that Edge promo is the gold standard for heel promos.

akl712

I've heard of it, but what happened?

The Cliff Notes Version:

Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels don't like each other, for realz.

Bret is WWF Champ, Bret is going to WCW.

Bret's last contracted date for WWF is Survivor Series 97 in Montreal.

Bret is God in Canada

Vince wants Bret to lose the belt to Shawn. Bret doesn't, He hates Shawn. Bret, contractually, has creative control.

Arguing, whining, complaining. Bret and Vince agree the match will go to a no contest and Bret will vacate the belt on Raw.

That doesn't happen.

Bret wants Earl Hebner to ref the match to watch his back.

During match, Vince comes to ringside. HBK locks in the Sharpshooter, which is to be reversed by Bret into a Sharpshooter of his own. Vince tells Hebner to ring the bell. **** hits the fan.

HBK storms off, new WWF Champion.

Bret spits on Vince and throws a temper tantrum.

Bret, later, knocks Vince the **** out, something I don't think Vince has ever quite gotten over.

HBK and Trips claim that they knew nothing. That was bull**** and everyone knew it, but their involvement wasn't revealed until recently.

Bret goes to WCW, Hart Foundation members Jim Neidhart and Davey Boy Smith follow.

Several wrestlers are pissed off at Vince, including reportedly, Undertaker and Foley, but remain with the WWF.

Owen Hart stays with the WWF to be buried... first figuratively, later, tragically, literally.

Vince does "Bret screwed Bret" interview, Mr. McMahon character is born.

Mr. McMahon vs Steve Austin rockets WWF past WCW. WWF wins the Monday Night War.

Bret whines about it a lot.

The extent to which Bret and Vince are "over it" is still highly debateable. Both say they are, neither is very convincing.

Also, I think it is worth mentioning that fear among some, including Vince, was that Bret might take the title with him to WCW, which Alundra Blayze had done previously with the women's champion, with her move from WWE to WCW.

Yeah, that's a pretty important point.

One of the things Ilove about the history WWE writes is that they completely ignore the fact that Vince pulled that trick first with Ric Flair. Or if they do acknowledge it, its cheeky, fun shenaningans, but when Bischoff does it, he's the devil.

Concerned? Sure. All things considered, between the decade+ of loyal employment, the fact you gave him your blessing to go, that you helped arranged the deal, I think I'd be able to trust Bret.

Of course, I wouldn't be dumb enough to have him be the champion on his last day. I also wouldn't be dumb enough to schedule his last match against a guy he hates and ask him to do the job.

In that case, what would you have done?

I'll operate under the assumption that Bret will be champion at Survivor Series. I have three scenarios. Now, I'm not entirely up to date on everything that was going on at the time, so bear with me.

1. Bret drops to Taker
2. Bret drops to Austin
3. Bret drops to Owen

1. I doubt Bret would have had any problems dropping to Taker. The biggest issue with this one is set up. How do you do another Bret-Taker title match? Today's booking would simply be "just do it" maybe with a stipulation. Wasn't the original HIAC the #1 contender's match? If I'm allowed a major retcon, Taker wins that match and hold off on Kane's debut until Survivor Series. Kane debuts in the midst of the Survivor Series match to hel Taker fight off the Hart Foundation and allow Taker to win the belt from Bret, to the shock of everyone.

If I'm not allowed that retcon, just accelerate the story where Kane appear to team up with Taker (going into the Rumble) to SS, where, again, Kane appears to help Taker win the title. Kane and Taker feud with the Harts, then transition to DX and the Rumble Casket match, where Kane turns on Taker (as he did, anyways), only making it a little more meaningful because Kane and Taker had been allies for longer. And the rest goes with history.

2. This one is trickier, but it has a certain symmetry to it. I doubt Bret would have had a problem dropping to Austin. For the most part, Bret had already made Austin. Austin was ready for the belt. Austin gets revenge for 13 from Bret directly. Thing is you alter the "Wrestlemania Moment" that was Austin's win. In effect, all you change is where the belt is, going in, and move aspects of Austin-McMahon up a little bit. Michaels-Taker at the Rumble is a #1 Contender's match, the champ enters the Rumble like the olden days. Still, messing with something like the 14 main is tricky.

3. Ultimately, this would be the "c[l]assy" farewell. There is no way Bret would have a problem lying down for his brother. The Canadian crowd would eat it up, no matter how you built it. You'd get a c[l]assic match and an emotional moment that probably would have lived on as one of the most emotional when Bret hands the belt to his brother and they embrace.

Owen could drop the belt to Shawn sometime before the Rumble and history goes on. Though, hopefully, Owen would be "made" enough to where he would never see the Blue Blazer mask again.
