Hey everybody, I have a question that begs to be answered. Third party develpers have flocked to the 360 and it's a good thing seeing as how I have one :) BUT I'm looking around and around at all the "good" games that have come out and I've noticed that there is no length to any of these games. RPGS set aside (oblivion, mass effect (thouigh Mass Effect was pretty short IMO as well)) I have noticed that each game is only half as long as they normally would be. Crackdown, Assasins, Halo, COD4, Lost Planet, Stranglehold. Is the fact that the format is a DVD contributing as to why the games look great but lack longevity? Yes one could argue that the ps3 games are short too but third parties I believe have to service the 360's needs for a multi-plat release. I mean, Drakes Fortune from what I've heard is a graphical acheivement and I read the review and they say it's a good long lengthy game! Just seems to me for 360 lately that they make short games and they think there saving grace every time is multiplayer!!!!!! Yea!!!!! But what if we hate multiplayer? Just want your opinions and DEFINTILY game reccomendations! I like action ALOT and I would like to not feel anymore regret for this white-box I have invested so much money in and to only have it fail on me 4 times already. Thanks and plz don't flame, you can't hurt a guy for speaking his mind, this is just what I"m thinking and how I feel about the whole thing.

Seems like a trend on all console games, not just the 360.

In some ways I am fine with it, I mean games start to get repititive at some point anyway. Its a shame we have to pay premium price however when the game is short and has little replay the price tag should reflect that.

I agree, a lot of games are short.

cod 4 under 5 hours in normal mode.

Halo 3. just over 10 hours on normal mode. Half Life 2. 15 hours on normal mode. colin mcrae dirt, 4.2 hours for 50% completed on normal mode

A lot of games are becoming more and more online multi player based. this is extremely dishonest for the people who do not have xbox live. Now before all you boffins jump up and down and say well you should get xbl. if you dont have broadband net how can you? A lot of ppl are still on dial up here in Australia as they can not get adsl.

5 hours of gameplay for $100 is obsurd. Maybe they need to bring out 2 versions of the game. 1 for offline and the other that has both off and online. charge less for the offline only version.

Uncharted is not a long game. It is around 10 hours. The level of detail in the current generation of games has increased dramatically since last generation. That is alot of extra work for developers to create those assets. So, they really focus on delivering a high level of quality throughout the experience and they eliminate all the "filler" levels. Shorter games are for the better. Not too short though, hehe ;)

there is one factor that haunts developers minds when they create games...that factor is "Time" of course. Corners have to be cut, areas that the developer would have liked to add in the game would have to be removed in order to release the game on time. Making video games isn't what it used to be, people are expecting more and more, and in order to do that, developers may have to focus less on length and more on features or content.

Although, I agree that the newer games seemingly lack the longevity of those past, I understand that the developers can not please individual consumers. They provide and manufacture games that "statistically" they will profit from. I am sure there are many factors weighed during the developmental stages of creating a game and I am assuming length, sadly, is rather low on the priority list.

lol, I agree with the last post :) Well sorry about the mis-information about Drakes Fortune, I thought it was long but everybody here is right, it is the new trend now. I gotta admit, I have beaten almost every game I have on the 360 where as if I look at my ps2 collection I have not beaten more than half!!! haha They got rid of the filler levels and now the whole thing is a visceral exp. I didn't see it before but now I acutally appreciate it! Thanks everyone!

It's harder to fit a longer game a disc when your filling it's empty space with stunning visuals, the 360 isn't the only console with short games, the PS3 has short games, so much tim emoney and development goes into everything thats going around that lengthy games are forgotten.

Regardless of all the complaining that gets done, every survey that gets done by the gaming industry on this matter shows that gamers want shorter games for one reason or another. The simple fact is, casual gamers make up a larger portion of the population than hardcore gamers, and they want quick, easy games. And thats what we get. Every couple years or so, some gaming mag or website does a story on why games are getting shorter and this is always the explanation. Its what MOST gamers want. Like it or not.

The problem is that more time and effort is going into the online portion of games, that means the single player modes suffer.

I tend to like the fact that games have gotten shorter. Haveing less free time because of life factors I really enjoy that I can beat a game like assassin's creed in a week or two even with its short length. Buying a game that will take me a half year to finish and tend to move on to a newer game after a few months seems like a waste of money and time to me.

Wow the majority of tha games you listed are shooters, most of which have an intense focus on online play. PS3 also has many short games as well. Some people dont like to spend 50+ hours for every game that comes out. Sometimes games are actually tooo long and feel like they are just dragging.

Here, here.

I used to play games on the easy or normal setting. Once games (especially on consoles) became shorter I took to upping the difficulty from the start. Made the game last A LOT longer plus I felt that I got the perspective the developer's intended along with really getting a feel for the atmosphere and environment of the game and all of it's little nuances.

Mine either. Its a good game no doubt, but alot of good games are getting alot more attention than they deserve from the simple fact that so many crappy games are being thrown at us. Mario Galaxy, Mass Effect and Bioshock, just to name 3, are good games that are getting too much credit. Theyre all good games, but none of them are the mind blowing, industry changing games everyone seems to be trying to convince us they are.

It seems a far too convenient answer for a games industry that wants to minimise the cost of making each game. By quoting a survery that says people want shorter games they will just make shorter and shorter games. They will get into a spiral making shorter games, realise they can still charge the same amount for it, and then assume that is the new normal length.

On PC when Valve tried Episodic gaming with its Half-life series, it decided that because it was making a shorter game (Episode 1) it would sell it for a reduced price - £19.99 instead of £29.99. On 360 you don't see anyone trying to sell their shorter games for a reduced price.

Yeah, i agree. Here in the Dominican Republic i have to spend 100+ dls for a single game, and can't afford broadband conection, so the multiplayer part of most games are useless to me.

I think the notion "short" has become more prevelant because young gamers these days are spending their entire afternoons and evenings playing video games now. They play them on one of the easiest difficulties, beat it, and then complain that they are short.

IMO, they need to make games harder. I think they are starting to do this with the 360 where the really valuable achievements are attained from beating games on their hardest difficulty.

You are right Heavenly Sword was short but they are making a sequal. I think they spent to much time on working on the graphics. I am just saying that you can fit more data on a Blu-Ray disc.

Bogles

That doesn't change the fact that the games are short. Game length should come from the amount of content, not the amount of retries you have to do because of difficulty or because you only play for half an hour every day. If I'm going to pay $60 for something I don't want it to be beatable in one afternoon playthrough.

I agree that most games could use a little more length. Many times the story suffers or they are over repetitious. It may be a trend, as some others have said, but I believe that it is a rush to get the games into the marketplace. So much pressure is placed on the developers to keep pushing games to the forefront. We are seeing development companies being brought up like crazy. The gaming industry has made a huge profit in 2007 and looking at their profits will probably continue in their present format for the games we play. There seems to be no shortage of buyers.

Yes,I also found most 360 games to be rather short.I think too much focus are going into the multiplayer and online features and that's a bummer bc I don't play multiplayer and online much.I guess you just gotta read the preview and find out if the game is long enough before before you make a purchase.

More games are coming out than ever before. To get people to keep buying games, they have to make them shorter so that you'll finish one and go on to the next, and not get mired in the depths of one for months at a time.

But I'd like to see longer games again as well. Even simple things like the upside down castle in Symphony of the Night, or the Dark World in Link to the Past add length and are fun without being tedious.

Sounds like it's the type of games you play. I play a lot of rpgs and action games across all three current consoles and Almost all of them are the right length for the types of games they are. You wouldn't expect COD 4 to be the length of Blue Dragon or vice versa.

I honestly don't mind that games are short. I have a full time job, girlfriend, social life, so if I can beat a 5-10 hour game in 1 or 2 weeks, that's fine with me. I also don't play multiplayer so once I beat the game, I move onto the next one. It's not to say that there isn't any replay value in most of the games I own. I make it a point to replay most, if not all of the games that I really enjoy. From August 07 till now I've played and beaten Bioshock, Halo 3, Orange Box (only beat Half Life 2 and Portal, will play Ep 1 and 2 another time), Tomb Raider Anniversary, Jericho, Conan, Ratchet and Clank, Call of Duty 4, Uncharted, Assassins Creed, and Mass Effect. I've just gotten into PC gaming (using an XBOX 360 controller on PC with Pinnacle Profiler so I can play all PC games with a controller, can't stand KB and mouse) so I've got a whole bunch of new games that'll keep me busy until summer. Far Cry, Crysis, Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl, The Witcher, Hellgate: London.

I'll say something to give you hope... after all the gaming engines have been built, which they mostly have now (obviously not all as new ones will still come out all the time), devs may spend more time on the content as their engine may be already built so I'd expect later games to get longer on average.

One more thing, what would you rather have: Quality, Quantity or both? I for one would rather play a kick ass 5 hour campaign of COD4 versus wandering around for 100 hours in Oblvion (just my opinion, I got so bored with it and the combat sucked). Now this obviously isn't the best comparison since both games are completely different genres, but still. It just goes to show how I personally see things. It doesn't necessarily mean that I don't like a somewhat lengthy adventure. Take Mass Effect for instance. That had quality and quantity. I played almost all the side missions and completed it in about 27 hours. That was a perfect length for that type of game and I can't wait to play it again, this time as a Renegade!! The only other prime example of a quality and quantity game IMO (sorry, not 360 related) is The Legend of Zelda. I invested over 70 hours in Twilight Princess and loved every minute of it. When the next LOZ comes out, I'll do it again. So if you're looking for a lengthy adventure, more often than not, you need to look outside the XBOX.
