Well I am upgrading my tv set, I just sold my old 46" Sony rear projection tv, which was basically a 600lbs cube. Now I am looking at gettingeither a 42" Samsungplasma or a 46" Samsung dlp. They are both native 720p, so will 1080i do anything for me on the size of screen that they are? While both have a "game mode" whichwould you suggest?obsolete2k1
Well, 1080i at that size wouldn't be much, especially since that means getting a CRT again to display 1080i. 720p is fine at that size if you are sitting like 6-8 feet away. You wouldn't pick 1080i since like you said, they are 720p tvs.
Game mode isn't needed too often with current tvs, and all it does is remove enhancements to get the video to the screen faster. But nice that it's there.
A 42inch Plasma? Are you sure it's full 1280*720 to meet 720p, a lot of them are 1024*768 at that size, sure it has enough horizontal lines to do 720, but you can't call it full 720p. I'd find gamers with the same screen to find out if burn-in is an issue, how good the blacks are.
DLP, if it's a slim thin model, make sure it has no pin cushioning (doesn't need to be slim and is where the picture bows in on the sides) or distortion around the corners being a slim model a curved mirror. You might see rainbows from DLP. And a lot more can go wrong with a DLP, like the bulb, spinning color wheel. And just replacing the bulb every 3 years for $200+ might no be to your liking. And it's important to get a warranty more with a rear projection, as again, so much can go wrong.
Check out the model numbers you are looking at at AVSForum.com, there's probably tons of info and questions there.
