Scratching seems to be more common if your xbox is vertical rather than horizantal. Sorry I really wish I could help you more L4D is a great game and its a shame you cant play it put an update on this thread and your xbox gets fixed. Send me a message if you want to play L4D sometime Xbox LIVE gamertag: TheNastyTaco

Ok here is what to do, what has happened is there is an issue with your laser it may be dirty, damaged or stuck, try cleaning your xbox of dust a little bit. Now here is the important part, grab a thin and strong piece of cardboard, open the disc tray and put the disc in then close, it will not recognise it now slide the card in on the left side of the disc tray and put it as far in as possible, then keep sliding the card left to right. What this does is sometimes the disc trays have their lasers jammed, they stop moving and this trick gets it moving again, for me it happened every month and via this process i had no real problem. If you cant get it right message me because i have a video of how to do it properly.

i work for Microsoft, and i must say, out of the millions of first year consoles, a 3% had issues that same year. 12% have had issues with the console years after. So its a small percentage. Every thread i read about defective XBOX360's, are due to some sort of mishandling at home. Its almost impossible to believe that some of you have repaired your xboxs 3-5 times. Once fixed, the chances of it dying is pretty slim. SO, before any other complaints, check yourselves at home, plenty of you dont explain to Microsoft what are the probable causes because you guys are scared they might reject your repair. I usually charge for my time and info, but since i just got promoted, i want to give you guys a gift tonight. Causes that crash your console. I. The xbox as you know, use a lot of power. So, when hooked up via HDMI, you should lower the TV energy saver to off. Playing with the high energy increases the durability of the console, especially if you play more then 6 hours at a time. II. Insects, yes insects, A LOT of the consoles sent to us to repair have been found inside the console. We find a lot of roaches inside consoles. III. Plugging the console onto an outlet is a bad idea. This also creates heat you dont need. DO NOT PLACE on wood laying down, best place is glass. i can keep a list going, but i wrote enough, and there are so many possibilities why the xbox dies. SO please, start at home. Smoking, also interferes with drives sensitive towards inhaling it as a liquid vapor. DIGITAL SMOKE. You guys just have to grow up and treat it with care. S&%# happens, but in A LOT of our cases, it has been from mishandling at home. at least 75% of our stats.

Im just your everyday gamer and i see people causing the problems without realising it most commonly is that they put their xbox near a window, near heaters, in non ventilated areas, slam their dvd drive tray in, etc. But some people such as myself dont do a single thing wrong, what people dont realise though is that we are talking about some very powerful components that if not taken care of, are going to fail.

Good temporary solution, however, later in the future, you wonder why your console died...

It seems like the repair center isn't repairng propelly. This is my 4th 360 looks like onto my 5th. Come on i don't play for 6 hours straight i play at most on an average day 1 to 3 hours. I have had 2 red rings, 1 e74 error and a broken disc reader. Jesus can you guys do anything right?

hang on, low failure rate arcording to mr 'i fix xbox's ' - wtf? 30% failure rate were the latest figures i read. seems the best way to stop your xbox from from melting down is to never plug it in. im up to number 5 and out of the 6 people i know with xbox's they have all been through at least 2. lucky theres so many good games or i would have jumped camps a long time ago. ps - it's not real good for a microsoft employee to tell customers who fork out good money time after time on new consoles to grow up.

You can defend MS all you want; however, what about the 25% you didn't mention. It's a fact that more 360s have turned up broken than any other video game console ever made. Considering this fact and using your premise that it is the consumer's fault for not taking care of their things, I wonder why people who own a 360 have decided to treat it more poorly than all the consumers that have owned a PS3, PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, N64, etc. You are saying it's the consumer who is at fault, yet the xbox 360 has the highest failure rate; therefore, you are stating people who own a 360 treat them more poorly than any other people that have owned any other console, including this generation. Sounds like crap to me. Even if you don't want to man up to it on behalf of MS, they have already publicly apologized on more than one occasion. And even if I accept your premise that the highest cause of failure is do to consumer care, the Xbox would still have a higher failure rater than the PS3 and Wii (granted the Wii isn't as powerful).

To be honest, I take very good care of everything I own. I have never had any problems with my 360 and I hopefully never will. On the other hand, I have had to send in 3 wireless controllers to MS over the last 6 months. I even remember sending in my red controller and it coming back in the same condition I sent it in--broken. Thanks everyone over in McAllen, TX! Microsoft, like every other company, has problems with their hardware and software. In this gen of consoles, it just so happens to be a bit more. You can either make excuses, play the blame game and act like a scapegoat or accept the shame. It really is time to stop running though. Problems are smoothed out and we needn't worry about it as often anyways. Also, it's funny that MS is making so many hardcore fixes with the newer generation of 360s, why would they do that if they hadn't had so many problems with it in the first place... I'm not just talking about the fixes, I'm talking about actually making a more reliable console. It's like it wasn't very reliable in the first place. My freaking gosh, some 30% of all consoles coming off the assembly line were malfuctioning near launch.

As for your promotion, I'm not surprised by the way it sounds you are bending over and taking it from the company... Do what you gotta do for the big bucks my friend...

As for MS, I love the 360. Great system! But you can't deny the facts or spew crap to make a company sound great. It's like that whole windows Mohavi (or whatever) thing. Vista still sucks. Ya the features are great, but there are some serious problems with it! Just like the 360. Here's hoping they learn from their mistakes and we can all be happy in the future.

I had the same problem. My 360 was vertical and I put a disc in and it would say "Open Tray" so I would open/close repeatedly and if that didn't work I would turn the 360 horizontally and do the same thing. I think it's because your laser for the Disc Tray is loose so IDK I hope that helped because it works for me and it saved me $100(warranty expired)

When I bought my Pro, I made sure I got a 3 year warranty even though it was a newer model. There might be a lot of people who don't know how to look after their console, but the fact that the 360 has had the most problems compared to any other console ever is indisputable.

I know of people who have had up to two or three consoles already. And this proves that the 360 is a good console, proving that people have still got another one rather than get a PS3. (Which on a side note makes me think about how many of the 500,000 360's sold in Aus are still actually working?) Furthermore, to fortify the point, I bought a PS2 from the first batch that was ever sent to Aus and still works perfectly. I have had it independently serviced for a clean only once and that is all. Everyone knows about the first batch of 360's.The level of alterations/fixes and press releases over the years speak for themselves.

The three major things that I have heard of are: 1 - Overheating. 2 - DVD drive/Laser. 3. - Hard drive.

Now, prove me wrong here, but aren't these three components like the major organs. My point is, aren't the most important parts of the console the most problematic? This is where the 360 let's users/consumers down. Finally, people aren't "scared" of MS, rather a bit more wiser

Finally, the statistics of returns and faults used by weskhaze are most likely based on the consoles returned to MS at his work only, and it also maybe based on consoles with warranties. May I point out the many more that would have expired warranties and have repaired their consoles independently.Whatever the statistics the reliability of the product as well as the quality of care by the owner both need improvement.

So now what you're head janitor and only clean up the exsecs toilets?

OP, wrap your 360 in a bunch of towels until you give it the RROD and send it in. They don't care to screw you over so don't feel any remorse for them.

I've been slapping/knocking on the top of mine for months and it's still working, just be careful not to hit it too hard. Do a search for "open tray" on Youtube for a demonstration. It shouldn't scratch when it's horizontal.
